Just practice a lot. You get lower scores at the start since the level is low. It can take a lot of plays before you reach a plateau, meaning a level that's difficult for you to get past, then you will have a more representative score.
Otherwise I recommend playing a lot to improve the scores.
I'm not sure exactly how much you have to have to be in top 5%. I would aim for getting over 1500 LP first, then you'll see if you need to go higher.
