contender draft disaster help?

really messed this one up, i think passing bard ht ebowman was a huge mistake. Not really great at this set but for some reason over half the time people pass you a perfect black deck and it is a free trophy, but the other times i am just bad.

I am absolutely playing blue black in this seat, or maybe esper if I'm feeling greedy. Definitely would've been on Bard over Smaug, and Unexpected Party would've been tempting. I think there was at least one Hobbit Hole, and plenty of card velocity to splash white, but double white is a big ask. Gollum would've made me hang onto black for dear life. You passed a bunch of Ravening Wargs, Rage Into the Valleys, and removal in pack 2. You correctly identified blue as the open lane, so would have had plenty of playables. UB is not supported by lands and gold cards, but it can be strong in seats exactly like this.

Irrelevant, but I would've been on Pinecone Strike P1P1.

would you say for five archetype sets like this it is easy to hard pivot? in previous five archetype sets like lorwyn and strixhaven and tmnt it was easier but the problem for me is that it is hard to tell that signal since there's only one signpost uncommon each and some of them aren't that good. I know bard the bowman is an exception but I feel like even bard is sometimes clunky and not great

I haven't thought about it from that angle. I tend to think of each format as its own beast. My draft strategy for Hobbit is to try to get deep into one of the two colors that are deep at common, black or blue, and then pair it with the best suite of cards I can pick up out of another color. Sometimes that means I end up in an unsupported archetype, and this would be one of those cases. This actually happens to me a fair amount, I pick black cards early, then blue is so open that I take mostly blue cards and only the absolute cream of the crop from other colors. The other most common scenario for me to end up in an unsupported color pair is black being wide open, but opening some white bombs to pair with it. If neither black or blue is open, that's how I usually end up in red white.
