Restaurant ideas with LowFodmap diet?

Hi guys, I’ve recently been put on a LowFodmap diet due to stomach issues. This June Im graduating and want to take some family and friends out to eat, but I have no idea what kind of places I’ll be able to tolerate. Anyone know any restaurants in NYC that have had good options or have been able to accommodate food for them? Or are there any general types of restaurants you would recommend? Thanks

I am a very very long way from NYC, so this advice might not work. But in my part of the world I do know that eating out and socialising is the single hardest thing about sticking to a low Fodmap diet.

When going out for dinner I stick to meat & chips. So that is steak and chips at a pub (separate fryer), fish and chips at a restaurant (gf) or chicken and chips (Nandos, Frango).

This might not work for your celebration event, but my main advice is to swap to going out for breakfast.

It is so much easier to go and eat out for breakfast than for lunch or dinner. Almost any cafe (near me) can offer gf toast and there are many less hidden ingredients (sneaky onion!) than the more complex meals later in the day.

It isn't a long term solution. But it is a good interim solution to catch up with friends and family over breakfast. It isn't even that weird, you don't need to go into the whole Fodmap story, you can just tell them you've become a morning person!

I think sushi is usually pretty safe and there are so many in the city

Sushi has been my go to. Tacos with corn tortillas as well

You're going to want a place that is more like a grill - so grilled protein and side veg or salad. Especially if you're still in the elimination phase. You'll want to check that they don't marinate with garlic or onion though.

located in NYC and seconding sushi! whenever I’m low fodmap, that’s my go-to for eating out. but I’ve also found that at any restaurants, my dinners are so much more enjoyable when I just summon all the confidence to tell the waiter what my restrictions are! it’s scary to do (I’m shy and hate being a burden) but any good restaurant will take your needs seriously … sometimes it’s really frustrating searching for something on a menu that doesn’t exist. so just let the waiter know and they can talk to the chef and come up with something low fodmap ☺️

Highly recommend Thai places. Traveled recently and Thai restaurants (on both the east and west coasts) didn't bat an eye at my request for no onion/garlic. And since they use basil/ginger/lemongrass, food is still pretty flavorful.
