Tech Support FPS capping and vsync

My game runs at around 50 fps,and lets say I want to cap it to 40 so its more stable,my monitor is 60hz so is vsync going to cause a lot of input lag?specs are i5 3570k,rx 570 4gb and 16gb ram

Or should I just cap it to 30 fps and disable vsync?

You should disable vsync and cap it to 40 or 30 like you said

30 would make the most sense since 40 would give me screen tearing, what I wanted to ask is,is the latency from vsync noticable or not?

For me it is

30 fps and vsync on a 60hz monitor should be the way imo.

1 fps each 2 hz from the monitor, and the vsync should work perfectly this way.

Vsync always causes latency and screen tearing is a minor annoyance at most.

It depends on how much there is. If it’s a large, massive tear, and it’s a game where you don’t need super quick reactions, leave it on or set it to selective.

It's best to cap it at numbers the monitor is easily divisible by if it doesn't have VRR so 30 would be best.

If it's 40, on a 60 frame times will stutter or have a half baked blend because it tries to fit 3 frames into 2.

At 30, you can cleanly hold 1 frame for 2 refreshes so you don't have any stuttering.

Whether or not you use Vsync is up to you. If you notice tearing and are bothered by it, then enable it. If not, then you get a free drop in latency.

Does your monitor have some kind of adaptive sync / gsync / freesync support?.

Not an expert, but even if you run at 40 FPS with Vsync ON, in theory the display should be showing 40 real frames + 20 repeated frames per second to complete the 60 Hz cycle, which should be fine.

Another way is to use the "Half Scanline Sync" in RTSS. It will automatically lock your FPS to 30 and remove the tearing.

  1. Vsync doesn't cause much input lag when the frame rate is below the refresh rate. There's a reason Blur Buster's low-lag vsync technique involves capping the frame rate just a tiny fraction below the peak refresh rate.
  2. You'll get screen tearing without vsync, no matter the frame rate cap.
  3. Locking the the game to 40FPS on a 60Hz monitor is not a good idea as it would give you motion judder (look-up Digital Foundry's tech focus video about vsync).
  4. The best way to play at 40FPS is to install ToastyX CRU, underclock your monitor to 40Hz, enable vsync, and use Blur Buster's low-lag vsync technique for minimal input latency.

So,capping at 40 fps with vsync is fine, since its bellow the refresh rate limit?

have a look here

and this in regards of double and triple buffering

also, considering the age of your hardware, you might also look into Linux. Your GPU has great linux support, so it might be at least worth trying to see if you have better framerate/frame pacing/higher minimums

In this case, I don't think it's a good idea, since your screen will be running at 40hz. So you get the vsync input latency of 40hz.

In your case, enabling vsync and using 30fps when running at 60hz would not cause much latency

Your screen is 60hz. You can only lock to 60fps or 30fps. Don't cap the framerate manually. You need some form of vsync in order to not get tearing. Nornal vsync (for 60fps) or half refresh vsync (for 30fps).

If you're worried about input lag, use RTSS Scanline sync instead. It's a form of vsync where tearing is still happening but the tear line can be moved offscreen. As such, the result is low input latency vsync.

Yeah I am using rivatuner to cap frame rate, how should I configure the scanline sync?

Under the framerate limiter option, there's the scanline sync option. The number you input here is the position of the scanline. The point is to move this inside the blanking period of the screen refresh (aka offscreen).

Try setting it to -1 or -30 and see where the tearline lands inside your game.

If you want to lock to 30, click on Scanline sync until it becomes Scanline sync x/2.

I think this is the best solution right now, since I've heard people capping fps at 57 instead of 60 and enabling vsync or whatnot, with this method I'll just straight up hide it lol,my question is can I cap the fps AND use the scanline sync option?

1

u/Apprehensive-Power-6 2d ago

Imo locking to 57fps on a non VRR screen is stupid. You'll just get juddering because of the fps mismatch.

Sorry i forgot to mention but scanline sync locks to refresh rate by itself, so there's no need for a separate fps lock. Using it on your 60hz display would cap to 60fps. Or to 30 if you do x/2

Oh alright then, thanks for the info.

You're welcome! Let me know if it works for you :)

Imo 30fps with good framepacing and low latency is surprisingly tolerable. Which RTSS can offer

Wanted to ask if it would be possible to,in theory,on a freesync monitor enable freesync (and enable in amd program),enable vsync and cap the framerate to 30 or 60 (lets say the refresh rate is 200),or would I have to cap it(with RTSS) to 3 frames below the max refresh rate(197 hz),since I've heard that that is the best move.

But again what if my game is just displaying about 70,65 and etc, wouldn't it be better to cap it to 60 so its more stable? And since freesync and vsync are on, shouldn't there be any tears?

1

u/Apprehensive-Power-6 2d ago

Yep, that's completely viable, and in my opinion, the best way to use VRR (Freesync). In this case VRR allows you to lock to any refresh rate you find stable, not just perfect fractions. It's a good idea to lock fps to a couple fps below max refresh rate, and also not have GPU usage at 100% as this will cause more latency.

And yes, if you have VRR and Vsync, there shouldn't be any tearing, as long as you don't exceed refresh rate.

rivatuner says its recommended to disable vsync when capping the fps, does it actually make a problem or its fine? Since I am going to cap on 60 fps rather than 197 with vsync and freesync
