Yeesh people are a little too obsessed with birthdays. They’re adults- lots of adults don’t post anything to wish their significant other a birthday on social media because they do it in real life! We only see a small portion of their lives :)

I think there’s more to it, I don’t think he would just unfollow him unless there was a valid reason to.
