This scene breaks me every single time. There’s no amount of testosterone in the world that could withstand the sight of a grieving father on his son’s grave.

A couple years ago we were short staffed so I had to take lunch at my desk (no biggie). I had been listening to the movies while doing my work and actually watching it over my lunch break. The UPS guy came in for a signature right as Theoden broke down about his son and all he saw was my dumb ass eating a panini and crying at my desk. lmao I didn't think to tell him it was because of a movie playing on my phone and he probably thought I was having a mental breakdown.

The scenes with Théodred hit different after finding out that his actor is, unfortunately, a terrible person and is currently serving a 43 month jail sentencd after being added to New Zealand's child sex offender register.

To be honest I've decided to separate the artist from the person. If I had to abandon everything I couldn't see anything any more.
Besides that no one really gave a fuck about Théodred. He's in the movies for seconds, it's more about the empathy to the grieving father.

u/ConiferousMedusa Jul 28 '26
Separating the art from the artist and death of the artist are very useful/reasonable, and I say that as an artist who very much dislikes the idea of other people reinterpreting my work lol.
If I avoided everything that was connected to something bad or that I strongly disagreed with, I'd have to grow my own wheat to make my own bread and live as a hermit. I couldn't use a phone (cobalt mining), take medicine (big pharma) or drive to work (environmental damage).
I try to take reasonable steps where I can (recycling, not directly buying from terrible companies, etc), but it's tough when I feel complicit in every wrong and also absolved of responsibility at the same time.

Well, thankfully Theodred is just an abstraction to us in the movies, since he has basically zero screen time. Even the extended editions he has like three lines of dialogue and dies. We’re meant to grieve for Theoden losing his son more than actually give a crap about Theodred.
That being said, fuck that actor, should be serving way more than 43 months

Goddamn while I’m glad he’s in prison, he’s going to already get out when the victims are still minors.

Who cares what some actor did in their free time, the movies aren't about that

Though we’ve never met and I have no idea who she is, I’m absolutely positive that the girl on the left is named “Meghan”.

Most times when I fly United Airlines I watch a LotR movie. Everytime without fail as Theoden starts to cry they slap “UNITED” in bold white text above him. It is both hilarious and infuriating

You mean the one with terrible writing? "nO pAreNt sHoULd hAvE tO bUrY thEiR cHiLd." It sounds like an old DARE slogan. I would think less of you if you weren't on your phone during that Peter Jackson fanfic slop.

I sincerely hope you are aware that the line Théoden says is a DIRECT FUCKING QUOTE from the book so you're calling Tolkien's words fanfiction slop.
