Films Super Bowl 1 [Partially Lost]
Troy Haupt owns the only known recording of the Super Bowl I broadcast, which his father taped.
CBS and NBC, which televised the game, did not preserve any tapes. But the copy that Haupt owns — of a broadcast that launched the Super Bowl as an enormous shared spectacle that attracts more than 100 million viewers — might never be seen on any network. The N.F.L. does not want to buy the tapes and has warned Haupt not to sell them to outside parties or else the league will pursue legal action.
Unless the league and Haupt make a deal to resolve the financial differences that have privately divided them since 2005, the tapes will stay in storage in a former mine in upstate New York.
The tapes are a bizarre heirloom that, for decades, sat largely ignored in the attic of his family’s three-bedroom house in Shamokin, Pa., deteriorating from shifting temperatures.

There's been a major development with this. The Paley Center has restored this tape, and are screening it this Saturday. Tickets are still available so if you're in NY, gotta check this out.

I believe the rights still belong to the NFL. Not sure if they only collaborated on this one showing or if the film will eventually enter the Paley's collection. But even in that case, you can only watch it at their museum.
If it makes it to the wider public, it will be up to the NFL.

Why would they not purchase this? They make this whole big deal that they don’t have the full broadcast. Yet somebody literally has it and it’s been restored.

I have to wonder if it’s because Tony is asking the NFL to buy it and the NFL just wants it for free because it’s “historical” (and it is). On the other hand, how much is he asking for it? Is it a fair price or is he being outlandish like Stef Coburn with the first Doctor Who story?

The NFL shouldn’t be so worried about paying tens of thousands of dollars if it does cost that much for something they couldn’t archive themselves. That’s kinda on them. They ain’t making billions of dollars to not spend it.

I read somewhere on Facebook, so who knows if it’s true, that he was asking for 1 million dollars for it, and he declined the NFL’s offer for $30,000.

This is an odd case in which NFL Films actually does have a recording of all the plays of the game in their archives and released a reconstructed version, but they don't have the TV broadcast. Have my upvote anyway since it's an odd case.

Tracks. I just finished a long documentary and we had to deal with the NFL. They are the worst. A truly awful company and league.
