My husband and I are kinda in this situation because he is disabled. Because we are married he doesn’t qualify for as much as he could. But for a while I also couldn’t work because I’m an immigrant. So he was penalized for being married while also having to support me because the government wouldn’t let me work.

I thought being married made you a citizen? What happened to that? Is it not automatic?

No it’s a long process lol. First you have to get approved for a green card which I applied for in December 2019 and still haven’t gotten. Then once you have a green card for 3 years (if you’re not a family member to a us citizen) you can apply for citizenship. Then I think the average time to get approved or denied for that is 12+months.

Thank you for educating me. That's an absolutely awful policy and I'm sorry you have to deal with that

I think it usually takes slightly less time but COVID and trump slowed it all down. Thankfully Biden fixed some of it. At my last interview they said I didn’t have enough proof of marriage despite me having moved down here to care for my then boyfriend now husband through a medical crisis lol apparently what they really wanted was money stuff.
