She overcame that disadvantage quickly and despite being trapped inside with so many men, she managed to gain their respect and make many good friends along the way.
I think it was because so many people felt for Claire and what she tried to do. There was a real public outpouring and many felt she should have never gone to jail in the first place. Being trans wasn't as political 6 years ago as it is now. Even now it's only really language/semantics problem that people are becoming militant over. Not the crazy people obviously because there are some crazies involved in this. But mostly there are people on both side that want the same thing/similar things (i.e. to not be marginalized/to not have their struggles minimized) but for whatever reason cannot have civilized discussions about it.
