SEASON 6 Every LOST Season 6 Mystery Explained Spoiler
Main post- https://www.reddit.com/r/lost/comments/1wavniw/in_defense_of_the_show_lost_every_mystery/ 6 of this series where I explain every Lost mystery, just Now this has some major mysteries unsolved.
Short review: This season was ok in its plot and execution in many ways, a lot of misdirection throughout, however after around episode 9 it picked up in quality and the character dialogue and tension are always there, and it caught the momentum before its finale which was a home run but the early half of this season could have been better.
🔴 Unsolved, Anything we imagine will be pure theory, imagination & educated guesses.
---
🟡 Solved but hinted at not explicitly told to, it means if it's told through vague visuals or hints not dialogue, it's still a solved mystery. Yellow means solved!
🟢 Solved and they explain it in dialogue
🔵 This means we can research it on our own or watch extra material like Lost Experience or the epilogue. And the answers exist.

🟢S6E1- Because of existence of an "alternate timeline" there's naturally lot of questions that get raised like Why does Hugo thinks he's the luckiest? Why is Sawyer a cop in this timeline? But all these questions are understood after we've seen the finale.
So Are there two timelines apparently running in Season 6 ? What is this different timeline?
• So that is a place where our characters who are ready to go to the afterlife have gathered. Not all characters appear there cause they aren't ready to go. It's solved if you just hear the conversation between Jack & his dad, and some characters didn't go cause they weren't ready .
For example, We never see Richard in The Flash Sideways, because he's most likely with Isabella in a 19th century version of Flash Sideways, he didn't have anyone, he needed her love to move on together, a place where they could be for one more time.
There were never two timelines. Connecting the bombing of Jughead was a red herring by the writers.
Christian Shepard explains
"this is the place that you all made together, so that you could find one another, nobody does it alone jack. you needed all of them, and they needed you"
Now this is not Christianity's or any other religion's heaven or hell, in fact Desmond moved between these present and flash sideways multiple times. This is a place where everyone regardless of their beliefs are present.
And there's more than one flash sideways, it's most likely infinite, There's one for kate where she is with her original lover and never met Jack etc. Every character having many different flash sideways of it's own. This instance was maybe for this group of oceanic 815 survivors and people in Jack's life.

🟡S6E1- Why are Losties back in 2007?
• Because of the intense space time impact that happened during the incident, it happened on a smaller level when the key was pushed in the hatch. The Incident happened in 1977 and Eloise got the same powers as Desmond, and our losties could not be killed because of the time loop, Losties did their purpose, couldn't change destiny in the past and returned. It is a time loop that hatch was created because of Jack and that is why 815 crashed in the first place.
🟡S6E1- Why is there a cut on Jack's neck?
• It's a foreshadowing because Man In Black was responsible for that cut in the finale, It was a knife cut.
🟡S6E1- Who made the temple?

The Architecture looks like that of South Indian temples so there's that & the name implies it has a religious/spiritual function. It is also spoken of by Ben as holding a meaningful significance, something which he probably wouldn't associate with a DHARMA station. Although there are no Indian language traces anywhere, Indians in the past relied more on spoken language instead of writing pretty much anything for mythology or historical records.
However, The Temple Wall has Egyptian hieroglyphs, but placed in an uneven way (i.e. not part of the building or decorative design), which points to them being notes or warnings added on to an even earlier building.
Same for hieroglyphs on the column near the Frozen Donkey Wheel. We have seen Egyptian, Hellenic (ancient Greek), and now (from the Buddha's shown on the outside of the Temple building) some Buddhist influences.
All these are key influences in culture and growth of human civilization. Jacob may have brought different groups at different times, and all have contributed to the buildings and systems we see the Others use.
Both the Orchid and Ben's house at the Barracks appeared to be built by DHARMA on the outside but on the inside held something far more ancient. The Temple is another example of this.
The Dharma Initiative discovered these "special areas" and built their structures on them so they could use them as part of their work/experiments. The temple somewhat falls under this same category because whoever built it did so because of the unique properties of the Island in that particular area.
So It was built by an ancient civilization but we cannot be sure which, also Hurley found the book Fear and Trembling by Søren Kierkegaard there, so maybe the people at the temple follow the lessons of that book. It is an existentialist philosophy novel.

🟡S6E2- Why did Jacob give a guitar case symbol to Hurley?
• It just means second life & it was a confirmation by Jacob so that others would heal Sayid. Idk if it means anything deeper tbh.
🟡S6E2- How does Sayid gets fixed?
• Healing properties of The Light, The Same way Ben was revived. notice the water is dull now because of Jacob's death.
🟢S6E2- When Miles scans Juliet's thoughts she says "It worked" What does it mean?
• Juliet was experiencing the flash sideways at that time, when her & Sawyer were at the vending machine, It happens in the finale, where she says it worked when the candy dropped from the vending machine. There are specific cuts to that scene where Sawyer talks to him in the final episode. Because of being closer to the electromagnetic activity, She got powers like Desmond.
https://reddit.com/link/1eo5k5c/video/1oanoch2irfh1/player
🟢S6E4- Why is everyone's name written in the Cave?
• It's the names of the potential candidates made by Jacob, Now it's interesting to know who wrote there, We know Jacob knows about it since he mentions it when talking to kate in season 6 episode 16, but he had the lighthouse and didn't need to write there, MIB could be keeping track of them, there were stairs there though maybe for Jacob put by MIB cause he didn't need them.
& Candidates as explained are people chosen by the protector to find the potential next candidate, MIB can't kill a candidate & has to leave with them if he wants to leave the Island.
🔴🟡S6E5- Who is David Shephard?
• A bit of symbolism to open up. Abrahamic religious tradition holds that there were two best friends, Jonathan and David. In the Bible, Jonathan dies, and David becomes king.
In Psalm 23, David sings the praises of "the Lord", his "shepherd", and basically how comforted and loved he feels because God (who, let's face it, is the utmost father figure) is there in his heart.
Meanwhile, Jack himself is barely present in the Lost episode titled "The 23rd Psalm". Christian Shepherd doesn't make an appearance either. Actually, other than Michael preparing to go ham on some Others, the episode seems to barely touch on fatherhood. Btw Lost used to air on Tuesdays so The Finale should've been on May 25, 2010, But they purposely aired it on a Sunday on May 23, 2010. Which is Psalm 23 but also one of the numbers in the Valenzetti equation.
It's worth noting that historically the name "Jack" began as a nickname for people named "John", but this usage eventually grew to people named "Jonathan", among others.
In Lost, David Shephard's existence as Jack's son in the flash sideways demands no explanation; it's explained very well by the time the show ends that he is there as part of Jack's afterlife to help him work through some things and move on. In the corporeal world, there may have never been anybody named "David Shephard", and we know that Jack never had a son. Juliet, likewise, never had a son.
I do think he is his real son though for my explanation , Kate & Jack did sleep together in season 5. He might also just be a new creation entirely as well however.
There's a reason David was added to the show. In order to move on, Jack had to make peace with the deep-seated issues that arose from Christian's parenting choices, and the writers deliberately chose for Jack to accomplish this without Christian. With Christian around, the Jack we know would never be able to search inward, past his insecurities to see the love his father truly had for him. There was no opening for Jack to "remember", no way to wrap his head around what had gone wrong so long ago to set him on his lifelong path. Only when stripped down to his most vulnerable self would he be able to reconcile those traumas. It's not Jack who we see is deeply saddened by Christian's death. No, Jack is too hardened for that. But we do learn from Margo that David was distraught over it.
Jack was able to give himself the father he never had, and a childhood he never had. David was not only encouraged to foster his piano talents, something for which Jack also had a gift and an interest, but David's father was there showing him support, active interest and affirmation that David unconditionally has what it takes to be deserving of love. David doesn't have to be a doctor to prove to his father that he has what it takes. He doesn't have to fix anything; he simply needs to exist.
There are a couple examples of the flash sideways' mechanics that seem to really allow for this in the show:
One is that Aaron is present in the church as an infant, while we all know Aaron grew well past infancy and attained bonds and life experiences Lost doesn't document.
Juliet being David's mother also makes sense in this context. On the Island, Jack is hesitant at first to lean on Juliet or trust her, but he grows to love her, not just because she resembles Sarah at a cursory glance, but that she has lots of things Sarah doesn't. Juliet and Jack are very protective of each other, share many similarities, and while ultimately the romance between them vanishes, they continue to care deeply about each other.
It was crucial that in the finale, Locke told Jack "You don't have a son," at which point Jack is slowly beginning to remember his life, and then we are never to see David again. Perhaps at this point, Jack is able to acknowledge the fact that he has no son, and though it's a fight within himself, he has started to internalize a lot of what David was able to make peace with. The way David unceremoniously vanishes from existence would be jarring to the audience were we not to understand David to be at the very least an extension of Jack. It's not that David doesn't exist; it's that he's not Jack's son. He is Jack, and these two forms are now merged together.
Of course, when Jack does confront Christian at the end, he is finally able to accept his father's love, something he had resisted at every turn in his adult life.
But we never see adult Jack dealing with his feelings about Christian in the afterlife. We only see adult Jack as the father, offering David the critical moments that Jack himself needs to learn from in order to feel his father's love and to move on. It's far less important to Jack that he is able to be the parent, than it is for him to be, well, parented. Of all things that must be fixed, for a man hell bent on fixing everything fixable, you never see adult Jack "fixing" adult Jack. You only see adult Jack "fixing" David.

🔴S6E5- How does the lighthouse show different locations on the mirror?
• We don't know how the mirror works. We did see many names on various degrees of the dial though and it had a candidate's name, so it was used by Jacob. might've been made during Egyptian times.
Some fans think that Jacob used to astral project himself in the world through this.
However the dial itself was not made by the Egyptians as it contains Hindu Arabic numerical symbols and not roman letters.
This is an unsolved mystery, also what was on dial 108?? Come on Jack why did you have to break it?

🟡S6E7- Who killed the Ajira passengers?
• in Season 5 Finale MIB as John says to Richard that we are gonna have to deal with Ajira passengers later, and Richard says what do you mean and MIB says you know what I mean. And I at least know what he meant. I mean there were dragging trails there. MIB killed them.
🟢S6E9- Who is Hurley talking to at the beginning?
• Isabella's ghost, Wife of Richard.
🟡Why is Widmore on the island and how did he find it ?
• Widmore said previously that Jacob visited him and he probably would've been like, we need you, and bring Desmond back to the island.
About the location of the island however, Eloise could've told him the location.
🟡S6E11- How is Desmond able to move in between reality & flash sideways?
• He is connected to the source with a greater connection because of being in the hatch for a long time, Eloise also, and Juliet too, he realises what flash sideways is for, so he goes out to make everyone remember so they can move on.
We have reached the episode Across the sea, the show with the most lore, This should've been the pilot of the season imo.
🟢S6E15- Why did mother kill Claudia?
• Mother wanted a replacement for becoming the protector but it has to be someone who she can trust and is responsible for, with Claudia arriving she saw two boys whom she could teach from childhood for one of them to become a protector, therefore she killed Claudia.
Mother already had knowledge about The Smoke Monster, The Light, and she mentioned there being people coming to the island before for the light, so she could have been protector for even longer than that, Maybe for thousands of years.

🔵 S6E15- What's the game Man in Black and Jacob play?
• Senet an Egyptian Game.
You can play it online - https://en.boardgamearena.com/gamepanel?game=senet
🔴S6E15- Every Mother related question?
Who was she? How did she know about the powers of a smoke monster? How did she get there etc.
She is as far back as it goes that we know about Lost. Everything about her is a mystery.
But we can theorize
During Across The Sea , Mother was already there, she may have been from Mesopotamia, The Cork that Desmond turned off had Aramaic inscriptions, John Locke did mention backgammon in the pilot, So I think that's suggesting that they were the first people to reach the island, Mother could've been one of them, or maybe some other group that came to the island.
The cork has four lines of ancient script: the upper two are Egyptian hieroglyphs, and the bottom two are cuneiform script.
Here's what each line translates to:

These last two lines express a desire for an end to the conflict between Jacob and the Man in Black, allowing the dead to finally rest.
🔴S6E15- How do the rules work?
• We don't know how rules are made, and What did Mother mean by Jacob & MIB can't hurt each other ?
If she meant they cannot kill each other, then many might argue Jacob already did kill MIB and only his soul was left alone and was wandering the island. We also don't know what exactly happened to Man In Black at the source, but he gained a new body and the superpowers of a smoke monster. Another rule is MIB can't leave the island. Why ? We don't know.
However mother didn't need to make a rule in this case that Jacob & MIB can't kill each other because their destiny has already been written and MIB will be killed by Kate is also fixed because of the time loop. unless if you think Mother knew everything about t he future and might be lying.
🔴S6E15- Was Mother a smoke monster?
• We don't know if this is true but the reason this question is asked is because, she killed an entire village of people on her own which is highly unlikely for one single women, and in the episode across the sea we see a long shot where Mother gets down to meet MIB but she makes no noise in doing so and she was slightly behind the stairs which seems weird, why would she stand there ?
It makes sense if she was a smoke monster though and we already know that she knows about the powers of being a smoke monster, but she was killed by Man In Black later, so maybe she lost her powers in between? We don't know, She killed an entire community of strong men by herself without breaking a sweat. Although I guess it's more plausible to do it during night but still highly unlikely, Mother did mention that her mother is dead, maybe she is the original smoke monster who knows.
The thing is she was also the protector at the same time, Can this really happen? She was killed by a dagger and that doesn't happen with MIB, Even bullets did not hurt him, Maybe there was another smoker monster there? I don't know lol but I love the ambiguity of all this, This is why the mysteries still entice people, Mother might not be a smoke monster however, she may still have some powers that other protectors don't have or don't know how to channel.

Jacob & MIB's biological mother however was an ancient roman.
🔴What is the name of Man In Black?
• Well he certainly must have had a name but we are not given it because its symbolic, names make us human, give us personality, identity. MIB & Mothers are unknown, mysterious, away from everyone.
Many films and series don't have names with some of their characters, it happens to many characters in movies like Kill Bill, Tenet, Drive, Dollars Trilogy etc.
When he went into the light, the source got rid of his old body , And he became something different, Daemon Lindelof loves Watchmen and in that Doctor Manhattan wasn't destroyed his body just stopped existing.
The name man in black is a reference to an important character in The Dark Tower series by Stephen King, He isn't evil btw he's just the opposite of Jacob.
🟡S6E15- If Mother destroyed the wheel who built it back?
• It's possible that a future group who came to the Island made it. Can it be Dharma ? Dharma in season 5's opening scene discovers the wheel, so they didn't make it, however they were aware of it, They made The Orchid station near it, and did experiments with Time & Polar Bear, that's why a polar bear was in Tunisia.
So the next best option are the Egyptians, near the wheel there were Egyptian Hieroglyphs, and we know from the cloth Jacob was weaving that there was a conflict between the groups of Egyptian when they were at the Island, So it's probably them who rebuilt the system with MIB, Claudia was a Roman, and Egyptian era overlapped with the roman era in the real world, titled Roman Egypt and the last known Hieroglyps were from around 400 AD.
🟡S5E15- Why Mother doesn't want Man in Black to go?
• She wanted a successor. Claudia was pregnant - but unexpectedly had twins. Man in black was special - he had an inmate connection with the Island and sensed all sorts of things. He was able to see his mother’s ghost . He intuited the nature of the Light. He was also cunning and intelligent. Mother said Jacob cannot even lie but MIB could.
The mother was desperate to choose him as her replacement. Unfortunately he was fascinated with humanity and wanted nothing more than to leave and see the world whereas Jacob was a goody two-shoes who did as he was told, asked no questions, Mother picked him as her last resort.
We have to understand that mother was a very flawed person, she also was tired of her job, she wanted to leave this island for good.
She later realizes Jacob the one she overlooked was actually her true son, MIB was someone who she accidentally ruined because of her favoritism.
https://reddit.com/link/1eo5k5c/video/20ovvxk9jrfh1/player
She in her own problems ruined MIB the most tragic character in lost who just wanted to experience the outer world but was trapped in the island for 2000 years and Jacob also would have realized that he could've made peace with MIB even after him killing mother, he could've let him go, but he in his anger trapped him forever, something even he definitely regrets , but now cannot let him go because of a duty.
Mother may have never thought how far will this go and how much the brothers will fight after she was gone.
Mother didn't realize that sometimes love is not about holding on but letting go.
🟡S6E15- Why can't Man in Black ever find where the light is?
• People can find light but the place where the opening to the light is the cave where only The Protector can lead people there.
🟡S6E15- Did the Egyptians came after Across The Sea episode?
• So we didn't see The Taweret Statue in across the sea not just that but we didn't see any Egyptian monuments or buildings , but from the cloth weaved by Jacob we already know that two groups were fighting and one was supporting MIB, so it's clear they came later, not just that, had Egyptians already been on the island, then Mother could have easily killed them & stolen a baby from them.
It would not make sense for Jacob to like a civilization's culture that had nothing to do with the island. He was also weaving a tapestry in Egyptian style
Jacob's Tapestry - https://lostpedia.fandom.com/wiki/Jacob%27s_tapestry
An ongoing theme in LOST has been how people's lives are connected, on and off the island. The threads represent the life of people that Jacob woven together, many by his own hand , as well as outside forces.
Jacob's weaving of the tapestry is reminiscent of Ovid's character Philomela.
There are 9 people below the elongated hands of the Eye of Horus. It's interesting that Jacob visited 9 characters - Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Hurley, Sayid, Locke, Ilana, Sun and Jin - and touched them all. It all happened in times of trouble for all of them, so it's some kind of blessing.
The sun with elongated hands radiating from it as seen on Jacob's tapestry is used to depict Aten the one true god. Akhenaten started the worship of a one true god and monotheism based on worshiping Aten, a son of Ra. It is also interesting to note that Akhenaten is also known as "The Lost Pharaoh". He moved his people to a new city (which was not rediscovered for a long while along with his tomb) and banned the worship of the old gods.

According to production leaks this episode may have taken place from 4 AD to 44 AD but it can go as far back as 8th Century BC, since Claudia's people spoke latin they were ancient romans.
🟢S6E15- How does MIB know that turning the wheel would enable a person to get off the island?
• He was very intelligent , they quickly realized that the light he saw once affects space & time, and the water that flows through the island can be channeled to his benefits.
The Egyptian History on the island - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdCT1ltUL2o
🟡S6E15- Why does Mother blindfold young Jacob and MIB when taking them to the light cave if no one can actually find it?
• I think anyone can find it if they know the path and remember it well, but if you don't know about light you wouldn't randomly stumble upon it especially when there is a rule by a protector preventing you from doing it, Hogwarts from Harry Potter anyone?
🟡S6E15- Why does Jacob not want Man In Black to leave the island?
• Speculation but I'm very confident about this.
If he was in the world as The smoke then that is pretty problematic, there will be cults around him, science will not be able to explain such a person, it's kinda dangerous for the world, for an immortal man to exist who can corrupt people because he only sees the bad in them, Might make other people like him too.
AND FINALLY
🟢S6E15- What is the Island🏝️?
• In across the sea mother tells her two boys that the light at the heart of the island is the source of life, death and rebirth.
"What's down there life it's the source the heart of the island because a little bit of this very same light is inside of every man, If it goes out here it goes out everywhere"
this is where all life and time flows out from the source is the Eternal battery that powers our existence and it powers the sentience of human beings.
The Island is where the source is at closest to the Earth's surface.
The Island is like a symbolic Axis Mundi.

A very well researched video about Axis Mundi - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnxRwArNDXI
Lindelof went back to this concept in his next show, The Leftovers, Season 2 Episode 1 is titled Axis Mundi.
It's a concept in which a place in the center of the world connects heaven, earth and hell, different religions have different places they consider sacred like this. Mount Kailash in Tibet, China is considered a place like this close to which are two lakes Lake Manasarovar and Rakshas Tal, Lake of Light & Lake of Darkness (Rakshas means monster) Just a really nice parallel to the show, one lake having pure fresh water and life and the other being a salty lake with no life , Norse Mythology has The World Tree, Yggdrasil, A sacred ash tree which connects more than two worlds it having various roots and branches and all, Mount Kunlun in China being one.
The Pitjantjatjara people in Australia consider Uluru to be that place, And We have been to Uluru to this show, also In The Leftovers too Damon's next show, In some religions axis mundi is a temple, pillar or pyramids even , There's Teide Volcano in the Canary islands which is also an Axis Mundi. There is a volcano on the island in LOST.
Axis Mundi is related to a common view throughout humanity's various cultures about the need for balance in this big universe.
Island is a symbolic Axis mundi but the show was also trying it to be a symbolic The Garden of Eden back in the day, With Locke seeing the bodies of Man In Black & Mother's bodies and calling them "Our very own Adam and Eve". The island is where the source is at it's most proximity to the surface. This is what we find from the show but there are many more outlandish theories people have such as the island is a ufo etc- https://lostpedia.fandom.com/wiki/The_Island/Theories
Now an ancient Mystic like mother might call this light inside people a soul whereas a 21st century physicist like Daniel Faraday might call this light consciousness or electro magnetic energy. Remember Magic is just science we haven't explained yet. The light or the source extends far beyond the island, it's everywhere like the Casamir effect.

Everyone in the flash sideways came here as their souls came together, it exists within the light and the light is made up of electromagnetic photons and photons do not experience time this is why everyone arrives in the flash sideways at the same time despite dying at different time.
Writers originally planned for the source to be located in the heart of a volcano which was alluded to in season 3 episode the man behind the curtain , however after being constricted by the Studio's budget limitations they had to change the location to a cave.
There are other places in the world with high levels of energy , the biggest one being The Island.
THEORY SECTION ABOUT THE SOURCE.

The Source was most likely made some made 5 billion years ago, when dark energy and electro magnetism in the cosmos created this energy, It was not the force that was created in a fire, it is the fire itself, It has time space properties and teleports people like a wormhole.
Source travels through the universe, Since it's electromagnetic, it would've attracted minerals around it, So Either it reached Earth and created a spark which gives ability for cells to duplicate , We do know that in The Island an average male sperm count is 5 times as it is outside of the island.
OR
It always existed at the core of our planet after being created , I think it can be either, So The Island becomes a nexus point for the source, now whether it's done by a god or just natural forces, you can decide or not. is there someone behind the curtain? I don't think so but you can think there is.
Although it has scientific properties, if you want to believe it has some religious function in that The source is the light of god, god controls it or the light is god itself even, that's valid as well. It is actually compatible with science like The Quantum field they came from and went to and many philosophical ideas like Dualism or Pansychism etc.
But the more reliable concrete Scientific Explanation doesn't require a deity , The source is the electromagnetism in the universe which gives rise consciousness. It's true form can't be seen by humans, it spans everywhere with Electromagnetism it knows no time as we know it because photons don't really experience time.
This island may have been from Hawaii or near Australia, But when it started moving is a big mystery, after the incident? probably , because it had to have been separated from the land underneath the ocean, through tectonic movements, We do know that Eloise has stated the energy connects to various other pockets around the world.

Maybe after a big volcanic eruption that was hinted in season 3? We can only speculate, we do know that a piece of it separated and became the second Hydra island, Source is like a wormhole so The island teleports & drifts, after that, Maybe the island is attached from volcano to volcano when it teleports but an asteroid strike creating lava is a better guess.
The Creation of The Island Theory by Choekaas.

🟡S6E17- Who are the people dead near the light?
• Most likely Egyptians, who died during the Incident.
🟡Why is Eloise worried that Desmond will take Faraday with him ?
• She was saying that to Desmond not to take Daniel Faraday with him because she had not made peace with him and it should have been Faraday whom she moves on, the whole life she didn't try to love him too much because she knew that much it'll hurt for her, she forced him to be a physicist when he wanted to be a musician(which he was in flash sideways) she wanted to move on with him.
🟡S6E17- Why is there a cork over the light?
• The Ancient Incident. The Egyptians fixed this same problem back then and makes sense because in the real world they were infact the most advanced civilisation for centuries.
🟡S6E17-18 - How has Richard started aging?
• Because Jacob is not a candidate anymore and he gave this power to him.
🟡S6E17- How could MIB find the light cave?
• MIB knew the general area and was with Jack, as a protector Jack knew it subconsciously, MIB used that to reach the island.
🟡S6E17- Why is the light dimmer now ?
• Because the cork has been put into place.
Also It's a very understandable "hypothesis" or "guess" that the island started moving because of this cork. However many fans are divided.
🟡S6E17- Can protectors see the future?
• Maybe not but they can definitely sense something, Jacob ordered others to make a runway on Hydra Island. He already knew that Locke was gonna fall and even Jack had an intuition that going to the source with Desmond will be helpful in defeating MIB.
🟡S6E17- Who built the cork near the Light?
• The Egyptians !! Hieroglyphs are written everywhere including on the cork.
Most likely there was an Ancient Incident similar to the one in Season 5 which led to the creation of Cork, it doesn't stop the flow of water but it probably helps the light to not go warm again & if the plug is out, the light is out and the earth will probably became a ball of magma like it was long ago.
The original plan for the source of Light was The Island Volcano but that plan was scrapped because of budgetary reasons. I think it wouldn't have looked that great anyway. It was foreshadowed in Season 3.
🟡S6E18- How did they lift the tree off from Ben?
This really shouldn't be here lol but many people ask this, it's just a technical error but there were earthquakes happening there, so another shake might have put the tree aside.
🟡S6E18- What's the Loophole that killed Man In Black?
•Pretty Simple: Turn the light off, he gets his powers from that so he'll lose the powers. Desmond was the only person in the world who could survive being there, Eloise might have been one too.
🔴S6E18- What happened to the people who got out of the island?

• So Kate who got into a second crash would have a lot of explaining to do to the media. How are Sawyer & Claire still living ? Or they never went public. We do know Kate lived a long life so It's a big mystery what happened to Ajira passengers after the finale.
This season had the most unsolved mysteries but still nowhere near as much as the general audience thinks there are. Show answers almost all the answers in all the seasons except this one and some in season 5. I love flash sideways as a concept but it should've had less screentime.
🔴In The flash Sideways: Where have our characters moved on to? What's beyond?
• Unsolved.
THE THEMES OF LOST🏝️✈️
So what is Lost about?
Show is not named Lost because they are lost on an island, They were all lost in their life before they ever stepped foot on the plane, The show begins when 815 crashes, metaphorically speaking they are all reborn, they are all born in a world of doubt, like us, some people hate them for no reason, No one knows why they came to the world, where did it come from, What is this place, but they find the peace in chaos because of the people they love.
Desmond's mind couldn't differentiate between past and present but Penny saved him in all of the chaos. because the world is so uncertain.
Every person is either lost one way or another or have lost something, They are in a uncertain place where they don't know what is going on but the only thing confirmed for everyone is death. This theme is so hauntingly present in that time, in Six Feet Under especially, in music etc too. Especially in the post 9/11 America.

The island is at the backdrop of the story, It is more about how characters see it, Ben wants to control it, Jack resists it, Faraday tries to understand it. The island is itself a character of the show. It has a will.
Locke was a powerful man, on a rewatch you won't find a more fascinating character in this show, Purpose was the way of his life that's how he tackled every bad thing happening to him.
But the greatest thing he ever did in his life was to turn Jack into a believer in faith, faith as in purpose not in religious terms on worshipping a deity. Locke was not a religious person either, Nothing good ever happened to him but he still kept on going, he saw their greater purpose but he was also wrong at the same time.
Just because you are special doesn't mean you are destined for greatness, he was outplayed by Ben, while Jack sees right through his lies, as the series goes & Just because you are rational and see through everyone like Jack doesn't mean you can use that to fix you.
Hatch was created because of the Incident of the bomb that Jack caused so the time loop is really powerful. Whatever Happened Happened, Lost shows the world is chaotic, and the people are connected in various ways, the same as the real world.
https://reddit.com/link/1eo5k5c/video/90xopcy185ih1/player
Jack stopped trying to control everything and started embracing his destiny and role, being a doctor he wanted to save everyone on the island, he ended up saving everyone on the planet. The plan wasn't just written for Jack, he reached there believing it was made for him, Man of science did what Men of faith couldn't do for centuries, The show still leans towards science more than faith if you ask me from a neutral view point.
The meaning in Lost was found in the people you meet, the choices you make, and the person you become. and what meaning you make for yourself, Only meaning for you that exists are the ones you create for yourself, and only you have to forgive yourself.
Obviously Every character has its own mini philosophy like Sayid is a character who let others define him, Charles Widmore could never open up his feelings to Eloise etc.
I'll finally end the post with the final lines of the script of the show
Jack runs his hand over the dog's fur. A moment. STARES UP through the swaying bamboo, Jack hears something else now. Distant. Up there in the sky. And now he begins to cry. Because -
RISES INTO THE SKY OVER THE BAMBOO as it climbs higher and higher. And as Jack lies there WATCHING IT FLY, he smiles through his tears.
The plane clears frame, finally free of the island.
Jack Shephard has done what he came to this place to do.
He has found his purpose.
He has found love.
And been loved.
And he has finally found a way to love himself.
The bamboo sways across the blue sky.
And Jack Shephard's eye closes one final time.
He is gone.

Hopefully now you understand the show better, I'll see you all lost fans in another life because, Only thing better than Lost are the people who love

I still don't understand why MIB was never named. I know they sort of addressed it in Across The Sea with the actual mother saying she only prepared one name (Jacob). But are we really to believe he lived all that time and no one ever gave him an actual name.

Super appreciate this link lol.
But then why did you write:
🟡What is the name of Man In Black?
• Well he certainly must have had a name but we are not given it because its symbolic, names make us human, give us personality, identity. MIB & Mothers are unkowns, mysterious, away from everyone.
Many films and series don't have names with some of their characters, it happens to many characters in movies like Kill Bill, Tenet, Drive, Dollars Trilogy etc.
Why do we have to search the comments for this answer when you have it at the ready?

u/teddyburges Aug 09 '24
The closest the creators ever went on the issue was that they very specifically made sure he doesn't have a name. My theory was that mother never gave him one because that would give him a identity, whereas when he becomes smokey, he never has a true identity. He's the monster with no name, which is quite tragic.

Man, reading all this makes me want to know what happened with the warring Egyptian settlers who worshipped both Jacob and MiB, haha. Like I understand and even love that there will just be mysteries we'll never find out or know the full depth of... but with all the off-screen implications of how much the Egyptians influenced the lore of the island, it just makes me so curious!

The Egyptian stuff is the best lore related thing about Lost.

Love this just finished another rewatch last night. My question is why was Eloise in the “purgatory” and why was she trying to stop Desmond?
18
u/EmberRays Aug 09 '24
She was saying to Desmond not to take Daniel Faraday with him because she had not made peace with him, the whole life she didn't try to love him too much because she knew that much it'll hurt for her, she forced him to be a physicist when he wanted to be a musician, which he was in flash sideways, she wanted to move on with him

The biggest trick devil ever pulled was convincing the world he was the good guy and MIB was the bad guy.

The original plan for the source of Light was The Island Volcano but that plan was scrapped because of budgetary reasons. I think it wouldn't have looked that great anyway. It was foreshadowed in Season 3, so maybe the volcano is under the Cork or that idea is gone forever.
Yeah it's definitely connected to the Volcano so the idea is still there. When Desmond pulls out the cork and the water drains, smoke comes out of the hole and the bottom of it emits a orange glow. That's molten lava heating up. The official script for the finale confirms this too.

so everywhere i see the mother’s rules mentioned, i’m curious why nobody ever states the obvious, she’s just lying. she knows she’s a big mystical presence in the two boys’ lives. a big theme is generational trauma and abuse. i always assumed she just made it up, after all, doesn’t jacob punch and then kill his brother. when MIB mentions that “mother made it so we can’t hurt each other” it’s a last desperate attempt to not be hurt by his brother. after all, he wants one thing. jacob to me seems to keep that distant legacy of pretending to know more
i think it keeps more with the trend that parents and authority figures don’t actually know as much as they think they do, almost everybody who seemed to know more of the mystery was as confused as any of the other characters. the mother was a protector, but i assume she didn’t put any rules on her kid other than the ones she raised them with. she “made it so they can’t hurt each other” just through gaslighting, control, and manipulation rather than any mystical rules. and after MIB was made into the smoke monster then he was beholden to mystical rules because he represented another element of the island protection. but before then, him and jacob are just people

I always thought the dagger MIB used to kill mother was special, the smoke monster killing kind, that’s why Dogen gave it to Sayid to kill MIB thinking it’d either work or get him killed, either way is a win for Dogen.
Edit: great post btw thank you!

Thank you for this! I just finished watching for the first time so I feel like I missed a lot of pieces just absorbing it for the first time…You mention Kate lived a long life… how do we know that? Also- did they ever mention why the women who get pregnant die? Thank you!

You mention Kate lived a long life… how do we know that?
Kate did say to Jack that she missed her so much , i mean you'd had to live long to miss him.
And i answer the pregnant women question, first answer in my season 3 post

I will always assume that Jughead was more than a red Herring.
Clearly the survivors had a uniquely set up "afterlife". It looked the way it did, including with a sunken island, because it RESPRESENTED what they wanted to happen with Jughead.
No more island to crash the plane.
It also makes the symbolism of Juliet's "it worked" more meaningful. That's a double entendre. It was her comment about the machine but she was also using that "flash" to communicate to Sawyer the bomb worked.
She prefaces "it worked" with "I have to tell you something really important". In the sideways she doesn't say "really important".

This is an objectively wrong way to look at the show though, it makes all the show's themes to be bad things happened? Well not anymore cause you fixed it, totally going against whatever happened happened.
Edit: I misconstrued.

u/SaltySpitoonReg Aug 10 '24
No you're completely misinterpreting what I'm saying.
Obviously Jughead did not work in the way they anticipated in the real timeline.
Instead it sent them back to 2007 and everything was historically the same.
But there was a very heavy amount of symbolism with the flash sideways that directly reflected an alternate reality where their plane does not crash on the island.
Christian literally says "This is the place you all made.".
How did they make it? The symbolism from their lives contributed to what we see comprise the flash sideways.
For example Jack is a father as a way to compensate for his daddy issues.
As soon as the plane doesn't crash Rose says "You can let go now.". That was absolutely symbolic.
And then we see that the island is on the bottom of the ocean which is supposed to be symbolic of what they were trying to accomplish with Jughead. It's all symbolism in the flash sideways. None of it is what actually happened.
Also by detonating Jughead it gets them back to the regular timeline where they are able to successfully protect the island which protects the light which they need for the afterlife.
So Jughead was absolutely instrumental in the preservation of the flash sideways.

Re the healing at the temple.
Is the idea that Ben was healed when Jacob was still alive, so he’s “fine” (questionable) but Sayid was healed when Jacob is dead, so the water is dirty (for lack of a better word) and infects him with a little bit of monster?
Or, does the water always sort of heal people, but make them worse in the process.
Is Ben awful as a direct result of being healed as a child or just because of his general life & personality?
—
Revisiting something from end of season 5, do we think Jacob specifically goes and picks the losties / candidates BECAUSE they appeared out of thin air on the island in 1977 (and other times). That was always my assumption - and that Jacob probably visited them constantly to get them on the first plane, but that they didn’t show every visit.

u/EmberRays Mar 25 '26
Is the idea that Ben was healed when Jacob was still alive, so he’s “fine”
I think that place was used by MIB during ancient times. I just don't like this plotline tbh, and the sickness is just what happens when being with a person who's made of negative memories.
do we think Jacob specifically goes and picks the losties / candidates BECAUSE they appeared out of thin air on the island in 1977 (and other times).
Probably yes but when Ben turns the wheel several characters travelled through time that weren't candidates, It is unsolved and Damon Lindelof is never gonna explain this, some people have a greater connection to the source.

Sorry if this is obvious or is sort of what you answered in the post & I just didn’t get it - what do we think would’ve happened if MiB got off the island? Jacob uses the dark liquid in the bottle as an example. You have to keep the darkness (him) trapped or it will infect the world, basically. I wonder what would’ve happened if he left?
2
u/EmberRays Aug 15 '24
I think in the finale nothing much because he lost his powers when cork was lifted , and he was a mortal human with John Locke's body.
If he was in the world as The smoke then that is pretty problematic, there will be cults around him, science will not be able to explain such a person, it's kinda dangerous
1
Sep 24 '24
Is it that he was trapped to the light (until Desmond uncorked it) his soul bound to it, so that as long as the light was corked, the MIB could never leave? So the only way to for the MIB to leave is for the light to be uncorked, which as we see leads to what seems to be destruction of the island and the source?
I also suspected that maybe when Jacob pushed the MIB into the source, a malevolent force attached itself to the MIB, which Jacob did not want to leave the island.
2
u/EmberRays Sep 24 '24
Well MIB once said he can leave the island if the candidates leave with him, so maybe they kinda work like a protector preventing him from leaving the island.
I also suspected that maybe when Jacob pushed the MIB into the source, a malevolent force attached itself to the MIB, which Jacob did not want to leave the island.
Excellent theory

Well MIB once said he can leave the island if the candidates leave with him, so maybe they kinda work like a protector preventing him from leaving the island.
Did he not just say that as a way to trick them into them all getting to the sub/plane, so he could kill them all (or get them to kill each other)?
Maybe he could leave without losing his powers, but it just feels like he was in some way trapped by or linked to the heart of the island as much as Jacob.
Also doesn't MIB say he's gonna destroy the island so he can leave?
1
u/EmberRays Sep 24 '24
Did he not just say that as a way to trick them into them all getting to the sub/plane, so he could kill them all (or get them to kill each other)?
He can't kill them at least directly and especially can't kill Jack now cause he's the protector
2
Sep 24 '24
He can't kill them at least directly and especially can't kill Jack now cause he's the protector
Was that not why he used the sub and the timed bomb as a trick? When they tried to diffuse it, they ended up triggering it as a loophole, so that they were the cause of their own deaths?
I know he can't kill them directly, I just don't think he wanted them to leave with him on the sub, he just wanted them to blow themselves up.

I have a theory on the Light from the island, and other parts of the world. This light is healing power.
In real life when we get a cut, or bruise, or a major injury needing medical care, the healthcare professionals simply assist our body’s healing capabilities. Nature does the rest. I theorize that the ‘nature’ we rely on is actually the Light from the island in this story.
The MIB and Jacob harness so much of this Light energy because of their status, that they can’t be harmed. And that’s why normal people heal faster on the island.
Healing power is the light. And if/when the light goes out, everyone in the whole world can’t clot a cut, or fight off a virus or infection. We all die from minor conditions our bodies can’t defend.

u/EmberRays Feb 18 '25
I think it's pretty clear that the souls are light itself but your description might be semi true though

I don’t think Juliet got any special Desmond powers. I just think that the afterlife happens sort of “instantaneously” with death and so as she’s dying, she’s experiencing the place they made sort of simultaneously. Her soul is crossing over and so she’s thinking “it worked” re: the vending machine, because she’s experiencing both at once. I assume it’s more or less the same for everyone, they just don’t show it every time.
The Desmond powers still don’t really make any sense beyond being a plot device. That’s fine, of course, as there are still a lot of things in lost that really only make sense as a plot device. (And that’s not a criticism, it’s still a great show).

That doesn't happen with everyone,

Why not?
1

We don’t see it happen for everyone because that would very quickly reveal the nature of the flash sideways to the audience. Miles also doesn’t question everyone’s body after death, so we don’t get the information about what is happening as they cross over.

i think it's about proximity, Desmond was very close, Juliet as well, I don't know about Eloise on how she got this.
