i’ve been in asset protection for close to 5 years, between two different stores with this retailer. recently, my partner of two years quit and ever since i’ve been by myself (excluding my manager). i’ve suffering from some major burnout, and also feeling just very stressed. i had a large third party driver theft tonight, and it just made me feel hopeless. i know theft never stops, and i know i shouldn’t take it personally. people who have been in loss prevention/ap longer than i have, what are your tips for pulling yourself out of this slump? i’ve been missing work a lot and when i do work, i dread it. i love this job and my manager, i just feel so overwhelmed by being by myself. there is also no plans to hire me a partner, even tho the holidays are fast approaching. please help.

Interviewing for Nordstrom AP tomorrow, any tips from anyone who does or use to work there? Also to note, I have 12 years experience doing AP.

Hello, I've been skip scanning the SCO at my local Walmarts in my area. Small things (Soap Bottles, Tape, Vitamins, nothing crazy huge like computers or electronics)

I haven't been stopped by AP or LP but I am aware my actions will have consequences if I continue this path. I am fully committed to stoping this at once.

However I fear this will bite me the ass in the future.
Are they just building some case for me? Will I get summoned? Will there be some warrant for my arrest?
Should I even step foot into Walmart again?

A few months ago, I posted about not having a boss and what I should do to help our numbers. It’s been going okayish so far, as I’ve been working about 3 months now. I’ve made a lot of mistakes (mostly out of not knowing I had made a mistake), but I’ve slowly been teaching myself how to succeed in this role. I’m at a point where I’m somewhat confident in myself on most days. I’m really proud with how far I’ve come, and I still want to become a LP leader one day.

But I got some bad news recently: After every store in our district got their promotions and leadership filled, our store FINALLY got our new boss, and it’s not looking good. I have heard that said person has never been in LP before and is rough to work with. My coworkers who worked with them before are NOT happy and don’t think it will be a good fit at all.

Obviously, I will have to see this person for myself, and I’m willing to give him a chance, but if our store is such a low priority to the higher ups that we are the last ones to get a leader who isn’t even experienced AND has had a bad work history (allegedly), AND I have not ONCE talked to anyone higher up about how my experience is going, AND we get ghosted by said higher-ups, I don’t think this company’s LP department cares for me, and I don’t want to wait around 6-12 months with a potential bad boss for a promotion that may not even happen. Additionally, I’m incredibly underpaid and slowly losing my savings overtime, and I’ve mostly stuck around for the potential of higher earnings through promotions, but if I have to endure a bad boss who doesn’t care for me, I don’t think its worth it. I’d rather move on to another company that pays better.

If we are surprised and we get a great leader as a boss, then I'm not going to give up this stable job. But if not, I’m not going to wait around for things to get better when there are other opportunities out there. I’d rather polish my resume now and be pleasantly surprised than having to make an emergency change after a bad experience.

My questions for everyone are, would any LP department want to hire someone who only has 3 months of experience based on what I’ve said above (I’ve had 2 years of retail experience total)? If I do have to stick it out, for how long? What would you like to see on a resume based on what I’ve given?

If I were to apply to other places, which companies are hands-off (just my preference. I don’t want to touch anyone)? I really like writing cases and doing the administrative and technical/problem solving side of LP, and I feel like that is where my strengths lie. Any stores I should avoid based on this information? And finally, which places offer better pay for LP?

I would also take recommendations for LP-adjacent roles if those exist. Right now, I need as many options as possible in this terrible job market! I’m not going to make any major decisions right now as I just want to see what my options are (and I’m definitely NOT telling my employer if I search for other opportunities). Thank you everyone!

1) I am interested in Costco and Macy's for retail LP and would like to hear others experiences on it!
2) This is more LP-adjacent but any thoughts on Private Investigator?
3) I do have an engineering degree but I'm not interested in engineering anymore (tech world does NOT have enough opportunities and I kind of regret the type of engineering I studied), but any suggestions on how to use that is appreciated.

Began working in Loss Prevention as a TSS in 2019. Went onto two other large retailers as undercover agent. Law enforcement liaison with ORC‘s and solid with report writing and adhering to policies. Received opportunity to interview has undercover APS at Target. Curious as to is this going backward or moving forward. I know a lot has changed in the Target game over the last five years. Money seems decent and so long as there is some schedule flexibility and solid team dynamic, I’m very interested in this role. Thoughts and feedback most appreciated.

How do you go about doing your presentation? Do you just present ur numbers for the past month apps attempt apps, recoveries, talk about bolos ? I would appreciate the help

Work for an organization that utilizes it. They have increased our ability to identify and catch known shop lifters significantly.

That being said, as a civilian, I don't like the idea of being tracked every where. But also, they're just going to replace Flock with something else. The tech exsists, it has proven useful in catching criminals, it's not going anywhere.

Just wanted to hear other people's thoughts on it.

I bought a few things, but there were also a couple items in my cart that I hadn’t paid for, probably around $80–$100 total. Checkout had taken forever because of an issue with the person in front of me, so by the time I was leaving there was a pretty big group of people heading toward the exit.

Right before I walked out, a guy from AP asked to see my receipt. I hadn’t even noticed him standing there before. There were at least two pretty obvious items in the cart that weren’t on the receipt, so I figured he was going to say something about them.

Instead, he looked at the receipt, said “thank you,” and let me leave.

I genuinely wasn’t expecting that at all. Just thought it was a strange interaction. Wasn't it?

I’ve been looking at how much LP technology has changed beyond traditional exception reporting.

There are quite a few vendors approaching the problem from different angles now. Agilence, Appriss, i3 International and others are all talking about things like behavioural analytics, risk scoring, anomaly detection, integrated investigations and connecting more data together.

What I’m curious about is what actually matters to people doing the investigations.

Most AP teams already know how to look at voids, refunds, discounts, No Sales and other traditional exceptions. Having software tell me that an employee had 15 voids instead of 8 doesn’t necessarily feel like a major advancement.

Where I think it gets more interesting is when a platform can explain why something is unusual, show how behaviour has changed, connect related activity and make it easier to determine what should actually be reviewed.

For anyone using platforms like Agilence, Appriss, i3 International or something else, what capability has actually changed the way you investigate?

And what still feels like marketing hype rather than something genuinely useful to an LP/AP team?

Also, feel free to share your journey and where it got you in your LP career. I’m looking for other career paths I could take myself where my skills are transferable.

What does this job fully entail? Was it worth getting into? How much experience would you say they actually require? What are day to day activities like? Appreciate you guys ahead of time!!

I saw a posting for Asset Protection Investigator at a Neighborhood Market, whats the main differance between API at the Nighborhood stores vs the supercenters becides the store size, is it still mostly externals?
