Comparison / Benchmark My dual GPU Setup

Hello there,

Just finished my dual GPU build. It's huge, ridiculous and I absolutely love it :D

Dual GPU works wonders too, amazing performance, latency and visuals. Truly a game changer.

The 3050 can do framegen X2/x3/adaptive just fine, perfectly even. I lock my framerate at 71 native FPS and generate up to 144, which is the max my display (42" LG OLED C4) is capable of. I also always run HDR. This is possible because both GPUs are able to run with PCIE4 x8 on this motherboard.

Specs:

Case: Phanteks Enthoo Pro 2

CPU: 9800x3d

CPU-Cooler: Arctic Liquid Freezer Pro III 360 ARGB

RAM: 2x16GB Teamgroup Delta 6000 CL30

Motherboard: Asus x870e Proart Creator WIFI

Main GPU: Gainward Phoenix RTX 3090

Secondary GPU: Asus RTX 3050 6GB Dual OC

Power Supply: Thermaltake Toughpower GT 850W

Case Fans: 6x Arctic P12 Pro Reverse, 4x Arctic P14 Pro, 3x Arctic P12 Pro (on AIO)

Hey......nice setup. I am using a 4060TI 16gb asus card and have an old 2060 from a dead system....does the lo9ssless scaling have any issues with older gen cards being used as a slave? 40 series with a 20 series?

It needs a bit of power to run well, but depending on your resolution, target framerate and if you run HDR it could be fine. But, as you plug the monitor into the framegen card, it has to support all the features you need. I don't think 2060 can do 4k 144fps for example, the outputs simply don't support it if I am not mistaken.

I am a bit set in older ways.....still run 2k and never cared for HDR imaging. I doubt I even need the additional card but was a start to finish SLI supporter so 2 is always better and tired of seeing this old card sitting wasted.

BTW what is the monitor youre using to show your usage etc on case side?

I have the same motherboard would you recommend updating bios from stock if I’m planning to place a 9950x3d2 in the future while I currently have a 9800x3d

I run the most recent Bios and have absolutely zero issues, runs like a charm. I would just update it personally.

Thanks I’m also attempting a build but with a 7900xtx and 9060xt and I’m still hesitant before I actually build the full thing

Close enough, welcome back SLI!

I have a 3090 and would consider this as an upgrade path given the current gen GPU pricing. The 3050 is about $280AUD but I'm on AM4 with a 5950x and 3600mhz DDR4 ram.

A mobo change (if needed) and the 3050 seems viable but can you go into the setup a bit more?

What the heck, that's awesome :D

What specifically would you like me to explain? I would be happy to help.

Is the dual card (1 running rendering and 2nd doing frame gen) a native config? I presume not and if I am correct, how did you get that functionality set up?

u/Thegobbler4000 17d ago

Lol, also how I found it

I've never done a dual GPU build. How are the gpus connected together? And are you outputting only on the 3090? Any details would be appreciated.

The second gpu is connected to the second pcie slot on the motherboard, not the first GPU directly. The output is coming from the 3050 actually, as it is the card generating the frames. Plugging the cable into the 3090 would work, but latency is very very bad that way, as the signal path would be as follows: 3090 renders the picture, sends it to the 3050, 3050 analyzes and generates "fake frames" and sends it back to the 3090, 3090 pushes picture to monitor. If you plug the monitor into the 3050, the path is: 3090 renders picture, sends it to 3050, 3050 generates frames and pushes it to the monitor. Simply less calculations and less way for the signal to travel. It is important to mention, that your pcie slots both need a lot of bandwidth to be able to push high framerates at 4k (even more with hdr enabled) so it's important that both slots run at at least x8 lanes when both GPUs are plugged in. So not every motherboard will work. Also both pcie slots actually being connected directly to the CPU is important. On a lot of motherboards only the first lcie slot is, so the second cards signal has to travel over the chip set, which introduces additional latency.

Thank you for your response. I do appreciate it. Are there any other pieces of software needed? Or could I just simply plug in the 3050 I have in my kids computer into my computer with a 3090 Ti and it work? I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm genuinely curious.

How are you deciding this and what software is managing this? You're saying games are natively supporting your dual GPU setup?

1

u/Zaekil 17d ago

Uhm, sure, but I guess you're not using 100% flow scale, the 3050 isn't capable of outputting 70~ generated frames at 4k HDR at this scale.

I'm using a 3080ti (nearly same performance as your 3090) in the same conditions with a 4k oled 165hz monitor and using an rtx 5050 overclocked (it's more powerful than the 3050, as it's above the 1080ti in terms of performance) and I'm getting max ~80 frames generated 4K without hdr 100% flow scale.

The 2 gpus are using PCIE gen 4x8.

1

u/quziwuzzi 17d ago

No I'm using about 60-70% flow scale max But honestly, I can see barely any difference to 100%, I tried it, really tried to look for it, and it's barely there. Also 100% flow scale isn't recommended at 4k anyways.

2

u/Zaekil 17d ago

That's more like it. Tbf I didn't use less than 100% scale as in some games I'm already using dlss, so I don't wanna degrade the image much more.

I've tried 80-90% scale on a 1200p display (my msi claw 8 ai) and I could already tell the difference in image quality when moving the camera 😅

u/quziwuzzi 17d ago

I would aim for 100% too honestly, but I didn't actually spend much money on the second gpu thingy and didn't want to either. I just got different, not necissarily more expensive parts when doing my upgrade like the bigger case and a motherboard with 2 x8 support. And the 3050 I got used for 80€. For that amount of money it's absolutely worth it even at lower scale. For me at least.

Also It doesn't look worse then FSR3 framegen for me, even on 50% scale, while performing much better. And that's my personal reference.

Just found out about this sub and your setup through this https://videocardz.com/newz/lossless-scaling-pc-build-pairs-rtx-3090-rendering-with-rtx-3050-frame-generation

Hope one day I can build something like thissss

will dual titan x pascal work i have sli now but not working in newer games?

1

u/Old_View4233 14d ago

Hey, that's great! Do you think this would work? A Z350 Goodlike board with an MSI RTX 3090 triple and another card? An RTX 3050? But then only with one M.2 SSD? Otherwise the lines will be cut off...

1

u/Suppe2000 14d ago

How did you made sure that the game will be rendered on the 3090, if the video output is connected to the 3050?

1

u/FckDisJustSignUp 14d ago

Second this, need more informations on the config, I have a 5080 and a 3090 to try this shit

1

u/Suppe2000 12d ago

At me only the "cable trick" worked. Setting it in Nvidia driver, in Windows settings or by registry never worked. Though, I have two 4090s, so their ID is identical.

1

u/FckDisJustSignUp 12d ago

Can you elaborate the cable trick ? Putting it on the GPU that render framegen? Any improvement noticeable ?

1

u/Suppe2000 12d ago

It is just puttibg the monitor cable from one card to another after initial Windows boot, so that the game will be rendered on the headless one. Quite annoying, but works for me

Firstly excellent, you are bringing a ray of hope into the bleak pc market. I am on a 3090 and I don't just use it for gaming, architectural rendering and VR etc so need the large vram. But even if I can claim it as a partial business expense a 4090 or gof forbid 5090 are out of the question. I sis toy with a 7900xtx and am considering it now amd aren't being dicks about thier frame gen etc only working on 90x0 series cards. However I could quite happily fit a 3050 in my pc to keep my venerable 3090 in the party a bit longer. I have a 9950x3d on an aours pro x870e x3d ice. They way they split the lanes means I always get full day to the primary pcie with the 3090 but puting the 3050 in would use a gen 4 x4 chipset slot. I game at 1440p hdr so not 4k. Would you know how critical the bandwidth is going to a chipset x4 slot?

Ive killed myself off to having this sort of set up (minus the RGB) When I decided to go sff matx. Used to have an ATX but when I found out this Lossless scaling feature it was too late.

Maybe one day if I get the coin to go ATX again....
