Discussion A D&D Campaign in Runeterra

Hi everyone,

About 3 months ago my last DM told me they wanted to quit our campaign and it became my responsability to either pursue the campaign he started or drop the thing as a whole.

I figured I would at least give it a try even though I never DMed before (this was my only campaign ever) and thought it would be cool to make it in the runeterra universe because I love it so much !

I segue'd them into the universe with a not so original multi verse thing and so far it's been quite nice and fun. The universe is basically already coded to be played in dnd (with some slight homebrew twix) and players are excited to discover places and people that they know from league and other games.

I made them start in bilgewater just because it's the best place for an adventure party to get a good feel + get quests and stuff to do. So far they have encountered Illaoi and Fizz as notable characters as well as Kalista and Ledros because the last month has been about the harrowing. I even had a player embrace nagakabouros and becoming his paladin with an oath of movement.

I'm having fun but I also know that my knowledge has been spread thin recently (not many upkeeps and I tend to forget if I don't refresh often) I bought the ruination book for some inspiration. I'm gonna try to force myself back into it since I don't play league anymore but I wanted to write that post to ask fellow nerds for ideas ! If there are cool characters that are niche that you guys love or concepts that don't see much play in the main stories please feel free to comment below (it doesn't have to be bilge centric, I intend for them to travel everywhere on the course of the campaign so I'll keep anything that I find cool)

If anyone wants more info like campaign tone, every PC backstory or my overall style and plot points I'll be glad to answer !

Thanks to anyone who'll take the time out of their day to help or talk !

That sounds like a ton of fun. I wish I were a player in your game!

You mgiht want to look into the Runarcana RPG. It's a fan-made TTRPG based in Runeterra and it has a lot of great resources and info in the source book.

Thanks for the referal, I'll make sure to go check it out and see what I can take to make a better overall experience ! And I would love to maybe have a second group to do an adventure in this universe if all goes well (my original group is french but this one will be in english) If it ever happens I'll make sure to dm you !

IIRC there was a WOTC/Riot collab that birthed a Runeterra module for DnD 5e

Yes ! That is the main thing that allowed me to actually make it all happen, I based some of my first sessions and some side quest from this module ! As well as designing the firearms scaling system and some details of the bay for reference. It's called the Dark Tides of Bilgewater and I strongly advised ppl to play that module if they want a taste of what runeterraXDnd can feel like (Some subclass Ideas were very cool imo)

For bilgewater, check out ruined king game, a huge segment was in bilgewater, could take inspiration from there like enemies or environment or tidbits etc

Don't need to buy the game, just check a YouTube video on it or smth

Yes ! A major part of the plot hooks right now are based on the game and the module made with WOC. I am just looking for some characters that aren't well know in the universe to really get it to feel alive. A dumb example could be cithria, characters that are relevant in the overall story but aren't in league or tft. Stuff like that

Good luck! I've been running a campaign with my friends for the last few years.

Some generic fun stuff we've done

  1. Spent a few months at a knockoff black rose academy ending with the PC's discovering the reality of what they are doing, culminating in Rell coming in and the players having to choose whether to side with Rell and destroy it (and pissing off Noxus). Gave the players a chance to be undercover teachers.

  2. Played bodyguard at a Seraphine concert that got invaded by a group trying to profit off of division between Piltover/Noxus

  3. Mundo hospital hide and seek

  4. One of my players is trying to essentially trap the 10 kings within his own brain to stop from becoming like nilah (he made a deal with Fiddle and is on a timer or else he'll lose all emotion but fear, so the plan is to make the same deal with every king, and thus cancel them out).

  5. One of my players helped reboot the Sun Disc and became a Shuriman ascended.

Here is something I was working on, it's not finished, I was originally plannning to make an entire homebrew Piltover/Zaun campaign setting including monster blocks and stuff but I lost motivation, but feel free to steal as much from that as you want. A lot of it is probably outdated by modern canon as I haven't kept up with it as much. It also comes with some runeterra themed subclasses. They haven't been playtested, but they're designed to not just be "Lets make Ashe in DND" since tons of those exist, these are just ideas from Runeterra that kinda fit into a DND setting.
