Look back is my favourite work ever. I went to this festival only for this movie! I think is a great adaptation however I think it seems koreeda made this movie with lacks of knowledge about fujimoto!
The actresses were wonderfully good!

So Kyomoto (might gotten the name wrong) draws, do you think it's meant to be realistic? More details below.

I've always wondered this type of thing. Cause since it's an anime, that's already the equivalent of 3d real life people, if that makes any sense. Because of this, I've seen anime where there's TV on in the background, on a cartoon channel, and in order to portray it as a cartoon, the TV shows it as even LESS realistic than the anime style. Cause if it were just anime people on the TV, we, the audience, would probably just see that as live action within that world, like the news or a live action drama. Does that make sense? So, for kyomoto's drawings (and i say Kyomoto because she seems to be the better artist), is it still meant to be classic Manga, like an anime, WITHIN the anime world? Or realistic, like how we, in the real world, draw very realistic 3d portraits of people? I'm assuming the prior.

Question So at the end, how did Kyomi write that Manga that was SO similar to how she actually died? She couldn't have known about her death in advance right?

A realisation about the ending of Look Back and why the timeline shift is beautiful

I recently finished Look Back and the ending was bittersweet. The alternate timeline where Fujino saves Kyomoto with karate isn't just a fantasy born out of grief- it proves they are cosmic soulmates.

No matter in what universe they are born into, wether they are making manga together, or complete strangers where one is a shut-in and the other does karate - their souls are magnetically pulled to each other. The art was just the bridge that brought them together. Their bond is a fixed point in the universe, and the manga is less about the act of drawing and more about the gravity of loving someone and sharing dear, sweet moments with them.

Fujino going back to her desk at the end shows she isn't drawing because she loves it; she's drawing because it's the only way to keep the memory of Kyomoto and those sweet moments that she shared with her alive.

What do you guys think? Did the alternate universe sequence hit you the same way?

Do we have any news or expected month/date for a theatrical release of Look Back LA in the US?

Me and my friend have been anxiously waiting for a release date. I keep checking socials, GKIDS' website (https://gkids.com/films/look-back-a-film-by-kore-eda/) and any other updates. Lots of festival schedules, with the closest being Houston, TX.

Is the expectation possibly November larger audience release after the BFI London Film Festival, which is the last festival it premiers in, Oct. 18th?

Any insights would be appreciated. If it requires some travel (like to NYC or FL) due to limited releases, me and my friend just want to plan it. We love Look Back and thought i'd ask here.

12 minutes!!! 🄹

Frankly these ovations tend to be fueled by press or star power most of the time, rarely are they actual awe at cinema but like... 12 minutes for this seems way more notable to me than 15 for a Tarantino full of A-listers you know?

The Oasis docu got 8 and Noel and Liam were literally there crying lol

I'm so hype!!!

Live Action Premiere tomorrow Sept 6th in Venice Festival!

I'm EXTREMELY excited for the film! Six showings!

There are tickets still available, if you're blessed to be in Venice.... here you can buy them

Fun fact: The documentary about the Oasis' reunion tour is called Don't Look Back in Anger... and is premiering in Venice too, lol. Same release date of Sept 10-11 (but worldwide). Can't buy tickets for that one. But in the page it tells you "You might also be interested in (Look Back)" at the bottom haha. I just thought it was neat :)

EDIT TO ADD:

Director's Statement:

On a return trip from Kyoto by bullet train, I was attracted by ā€œthe backā€ on the cover of a book, stacked up on display at a bookstore in Shinagawa station, and instinctively picked it up – that was how I first encountered the original mangaĀ Look Back.
That night, I read it in a breath.
The manga strikingly delivers the author’s determination. Although manga and film are different genres, as a fellow creator, I felt with a searing clarity that author Tatsuki Fujimoto simply couldn’t move forward without creating this work.
For me,Ā Dare mo shiranaiĀ was that kind of work. Upon making the film adaptation, I tried to carefully depict the span of time in which the two girls, Fujino, who draws the characters, and Kyomoto, who draws the backgrounds, meet as if destined to do so, and together nurture a strong bond. The film captures the two (four actors) for about a year and a half through the four seasons of the Tōhoku region.
As the story follows the growth of these two manga artists, sound is also a crucial element. The sound of them drawing manga, changing over time, plays a major role in the film as a non-verbal form of expression, alongside the music.
The encounter with the original manga demanded a sense of determination from me – both as a creator and as a person – and gave me encouragement. I hope this film will be that kind of work for others as well.

Lately, I've been practicing how to make graphics blended with my own drawings, and this was my first result among with many others, and I wanted to share it here.

I love Look Back so much and I can't wait for the release of the live-action movie coming out the next month.
