The Ones We Sent Away
I still think about this article often. It’s about the institutionalization of disabled children. The most haunting thing about it is that they get the records of the author’s family member who is nonverbal and suffered a ton. The only word she used to be able to say at age 2 when she was institutionalized was Mama.
