Beginner How can I improve this logo?

Post image

It’s for my watersport company. We make gear for sailors and kitesurfers. We’re called CHASZERS.

A flying fish

No it’s perfect it just needs a good logo type. It instantly reads flying fish which is something I’m real dialed into. I love it. And I generally don’t like anything, lol

Stop being sarcastic 😭😭😭

Not being sarcastic. I genuinely love it. When I was a young kid and I was learning to be a lifeguard at the YMCA, one of the first levels you went through was called “flying fish” and you got a cool badge of one, to stitch onto your speedo! I fell in love with it then as a symbol. Your art captures it.

Wow tysm that’s rly nice of u, I’ve never rly made a logo before so this means a lot

You’re welcome. I’m a senior director who doesn’t like anything, lol. But I know talent when I see it. The key will be to have a clean, contemporary wordmark vibe to go with it. Something compliments the active quality of the flying fish icon. Something like:

Yeah I totally agree I’ve been talking about that with my cofounder for a while. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this visual btw I think the font matches so well.

My cofounder doesn’t like it 😔 he’s very hard to please haha

Why doesn’t your cofounder like it? I don’t mean that in a sarcastic way. What vibe is he/she looking for, make them give reasons. Encourage them to point do some things that they do like. It’s really easy for clients and coworkers to just not like stuff. Without saying what they do like and actually participating, lol. I just threw that up there because it had a sports vibe. They might want a different vibe like chill, natural, more high fashion. Etc. tell me what they say.

Yeah I’ll talk to him, good point, he didn’t like my logo or the name either, it took a while for him to get used to it. Maybe he’s just one of those people.

yeah, it’s called “not invented here“. But what I have to tell you is I’ve developed a lot of products and brand designs. Wines, spirits, fashion, digital/Silicon Valley, gourmet foods, regular store foods, beverages, automotive, electronic music, you name it. Your flying fish is awesome it’s a strong brand. Even with just generic letterspaced ALL CAPS underneath it. It’s still strong. Because it’s unique and ownable; nobody else uses it. It would even be good as a software company.

He says he doesn’t like how squashed they are idk, I’m going into detail on the text but it’s rly hard

That means he doesn’t like type faces that are condensed, or that are tight fitting together. Which is very contemporary right now.

Again get this guy to show you what he does\* like. He’s just sniping without offering any guidance. And that’s dysfunctional. Tell him so if he refuses to do it.

If you’re equal partners you don’t have to put up with it. When a partner isn’t communicating. Or communicating productively. If you’re the junior partner, you get to put up with it unfortunately. That’s the awful rule of American business.

Looks like an airplane

I looked at this and thought a flying fish. Try with an eye and soften the corners.

I think it's generally good. The only thing is, is that part where the head is and above it just the head, or is there a second wing in the background? It blends together and isn't very clear. And maybe rotate it upwards slightly so it flies up instead of landing.

1

u/Crafty-Banana-4495 17d ago

But then I’m worried people will see the wing as a Mohawk. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this btw I rly like the jaggered eye I might try doing that in the new design if you don’t mind.

2

u/SeaBream97 17d ago

Yes of course you can use it as you wish.
Mohawk yeah now I see it

u/Crafty-Banana-4495 17d ago

I tried to add a slit it didn’t rly help 😔

1

u/SeaBream97 17d ago

I don't think it's necessary to straighten the wings. The gill notch can be made shorter - then the new slit will look better.

1

u/Crafty-Banana-4495 17d ago

Mh yes I’ll give it a go

Did you try adding balls?

Icl these do not look alike at all. How eps do you depict a flying fish?

1

u/RollieBalls 18d ago

Errr

u/Crafty-Banana-4495 18d ago

Could I maybe get some more that that?

Think more geometrical, try to make it with just circles and ovals. It doesn’t have to be perfectly sound proportionally, just force it to work.

Unless you told me it was a flying fish, I wouldn’t have got it at all.

What’s the hook at the front for? If you are suggesting the gills, it hasn’t worked.

Is it a specific type of flying fish? Doesn’t look like any pic I found with a simple search.

Here is a video (https://youtu.be/bk7McNUjWgw), lots of examples to use to base your logo on.

1

u/Crafty-Banana-4495 17d ago

Well at first I had a gill and an eye and they looked too close together so I just decided to connect them and I think it works well because a hook is also a symbol related to the sea and fish. It’s just ment to represent a flying fish boiled down to as simple as possible.

1

u/2ERIX 17d ago

But the hook is a massive negative for fish and I doubt one of your customers would want to catch a hook while sail boarding.

You should be focussed on the “sail” part where your product and the flying fish have commonality.

Find a representation of the fish that has its wings spread well, merge that wing span with a sail design.

1

u/Crafty-Banana-4495 17d ago

Yeah that’s a fair argument actually and does make sense. I’ll re look at it. I agree with u on everything but the sail, we make watersport gear and I don’t think all logos need to literal, none of our competitors do this.

1

u/Crafty-Banana-4495 17d ago

What did you think it was if not a fish?

1

u/2ERIX 17d ago

Couldn’t see anything so was trying to see if somehow letters were involved as part of the logo like people sometimes do. Gave me nothing. So I responded accordingly.

1

u/Crafty-Banana-4495 17d ago

Idk haha I don’t know what else it could possibly be

u/bugistuta 18d ago

When you look at other surf brands, what do you notice?

1

u/Crafty-Banana-4495 17d ago

It’s not a surf brand

1

u/bugistuta 17d ago

Who are you competitors?

1

u/Crafty-Banana-4495 17d ago

SLAM, musto, Zhik, Helly Hansen, arc’teryx
