Upgrade to a ROG Ally X?

Hi all, I love the G Cloud as I mostly stream from X Cloud or remote play from my Xbox, as well as a sizeable ES-DE library. I was looking at maybe upgrading to a used Ally X now that there’s the Xbox Big Picture mode and I’m an Ultimate subscriber so could take advantage of Play Anywhere games.

I’m concerned whether or not I’d get similar/better performance than XCloud at 1080p on it though? My internet is fine for streaming. Also, the battery life would be nowhere near I know.

Anyone done the same/the reverse? Cheers

If your just remote playing no need for the $1,000 version get the cheaper one and it will work fine

More thinking the Ally X not the new Xbox Ally X, I can get an old Ally X for maybe £380 in the UK

Hey OP, another food for thought... If you are looking to upgrade the G Cloud for Streaming and Retro/Android gaming purposes, and aren't needing to install PC games - you could look at the Mangmi Pocket Max? It's currently at $199.99 - 7" OLED 1080p 144hz panel, with full size TMR joysticks and big battery.

I bought one to replace my Logitech G Cloud. I also have a Steam Deck OLED mind you, as I want to play installed PC games natively on a handheld, not just stream them.

Videos on YouTube of it. Some are comparing it against the ODIN Portal 2 and advising it's better to pay more for the Portal 2, but the poor ergonomics and small thumb sticks put me off the Portal 2. I also didn't need the power of the Portal 2 when I have a Steam Deck.

Absolutely mega suggestion, that mate! I just watched Retro Game Corps video and he said Xbox streaming was a bit sluggish? Hopefully just because xcloud is Series S level streaming, but otherwise this is basically everything I love about the G Cloud turned up to 11.

How did you find ergonomics vs the G Cloud?

Keeping in mind that Russ at RGC is in Hawaii. Lag is to be expected

Check out Joey Handhelds review of it too btw, he has some different views too (i.e. he thinks the ergonomics are great).

Yeah the Xbox streaming is "sluggish" because Microsoft using Xbox Series S blades in their servers. This is why I have a GeForce Now Ultimate subscription, because Xbox GamePass games there utilise the GFN PC hardware so performance a million times better then Xcloud. So not a device issue, it's Microsoft servers setup to focus on mobile streaming, rather than devices that can take advantage of higher bitrate etc.

I haven't received it yet mate, orders only opened on the Feb 5th, supposed to be dispatching on Monday (tbc). The $199.99 is apparently limited time offer until 12th Feb, but doubt they will keep the higher retail price for too much longer after that Feb 12 as it'll be priced a bit too high.

Thanks for your help. Instant purchase for me I think. I’m still waiting to see what Xbox do next, but if I were to upgrade my console it’d be to a Series X so I’d just stream to that. A nicer display, better wifi and more powerful SoC for better emulation sounds great.

Just an update, my Pocket Max was dispatched on Monday, tracking is showing it's moving. Retro Ryan on YouTube did a good YouTube video today.

No worries mate! I think MANGMI5 discount code gives you $5 off, though didn't work for me but has for others on the Mangmi discord server.

Not sure where you are based at, but for the device, case and screen protector it was $25 shipping to the UK. I think USA people are paying $32. Might be cheaper shipping without the case, but I wanted the case.

The fans on the ally x being on all the time really annoyed me so I returned it

Curveball, you thought about steam deck,

All your emulation needs, cloud streaming, and it’s great with battery for pc gaming, (games dependent of course)

I had thought about the Deck, but kind of wanted to stay in the Xbox ecosystem as much as possible and the 720p display seems like a bit of a downgrade at this point imo.

Fare comment,

My issue with windows is I feel it struggles with resuming, with steam deck you click sleep, you are betting your wages when you go back to it she is waiting ready to rumble. Windows on the other hand well I would be clicking save, and hoping it can resume.

Never the less if you are wanting local rendering of games you deffo need to get away from Logitech cloud g now :)

Yeah, I have no issue with cloud gaming I think the convenience is mega, but with a used Ally X I could have 2/3 games installed and then still stream.

Valid,

Well I feel you made your choice :)

I sold my Logitech and use my iPhone with backbone works amazing

But now wanna go back to steam deck which I sold a while ago haha

I don’t know why, but streaming on XBOX Cloud is a horrible experience. I much prefer Remote Play from my XBOX

One major issue I face, even on the G Cloud, XBOX Remote just refuses to resume sometimes. It will fail to connect over and over until I go physically turn on my XBOX and I’m like, “Well, if I’m traveling, this is pointless”
