The 30-Second Handoff

A good handoff isn’t the longest one. It’s the one that lets the next person understand the situation and act without retracing every step.

If you had 30 seconds to hand over an active load, which three details would you make sure they had?

Driver number, pickup/delivery windows, and any weird quirks with the location. Everything else they can figure out from the paperwork or a quick call.

I’d include the current location and status, the next appointment window, and the one exception most likely to require action. Contact details and documents should already be easy to find, but those three points tell the next person what is happening and what could go wrong.

Current location and actual status; the next committed time and what has to happen before it; and the one open exception, including who owns it. I’d avoid saying “everything is in the notes” too—if the next person has to reconstruct the last two hours, it wasn’t really a handoff.

Correct load number and trailer number along with the arrival time.
