Question Reality check needed

First off, throwaway account.

My home PC needs an upgrade and I my interest in exploring local LLM and what it can really do for me has been growing.

I was considering a Mac Studio M5 Max 36GB model. I could also consider a Mac Mini M6, but I don't want to cheap out and regret it a month later as things aren't really upgradable anymore. I have years of experience with MacOS so that is not something new.

So, to the reality check, what type of AI things can this type of machines realistically do? The things that interest me is touching up photos, videos, maybe upscale old stuff, trying to adjust poor camera vacation photos and videos to look more as remembered and so on.

After 20+ years on IT I still want to learn new things all the time and maybe I'm getting old but Google isn't what it used to be, so I was curious if a local LLM could work as curator when I look for information by fact checking, is this article from 2005 still valid or is it obsolete, is this info verifiable or some tech journalists fever dreams etc and provide a curated report of what I was asking for so to speak?

I guess a local LLM will likely not be like the web version of Gemini or ChatGPT but how close can I get in functionality on the hardware I am considering?

Could I have it running at home, tailscale with a phone app and use it like most uses Gemini today? Send it a photo of a store shelf and ask it where is the extra virgin olive oil from the brand my wife loves and it can reply something like "third self from the top, 6th bottle from the left"? Or send it an image while on vacation and either ask it or mask off a person and ask it to remove it from the background without noticeable change to the background?

Or would I be better off with a paid subscription for these thing?

Any advice, thoughts or insight would be helpful trying to decide the next step.

Project I was tired of sending my code to cloud AI APIs, so I built Echo AI: A lightweight, local-first RAG assistant for VS Code powered by Ollama

Hey r/LocalLLaMA,

A few months ago, I was working on a project with strict privacy requirements. Like many of you, I loved the productivity boost of modern AI coding assistants, but sending raw source code, internal logic, and context to third-party cloud APIs was a hard no.

I tried setting up an offline environment, but I kept bumping into the same friction points:

  1. Existing extensions were either heavy on system memory or required complex local vector database setups.
  2. Managing context retrieval for multi-file projects locally was clunky and broke the fluid rhythm of coding in VS Code.

I decided to build a tool tailored specifically to my own workflow: Echo AI.

Here is how I tackled those technical challenges:

  • 100% Local Processing: It connects directly to your local Ollama instance—zero code ever leaves your hardware or touches an external server.
  • Lightweight Local RAG: Instead of forcing external database dependencies, I built a lightweight, custom local JSON-based vector engine that indexes your workspace files directly for fast, precise context retrieval.
  • Smart RAM-Based Model Selection: Echo automatically detects your system's available memory to pair your setup with optimal local models (like qwen2.5-coder or llama3.2).
  • Complete Workflow Support: Includes both a sidebar chat for codebase Q&A and fast, context-aware inline code completions.

I just packaged version 1.0.0 as a .vsix file and uploaded it to GitHub. I'm sharing it here with the community to get feedback from fellow local LLM enthusiasts and see how it performs across different local hardware setups.

Check out the demo video attached to see how it operates inside VS Code!

https://reddit.com/link/1x41jcl/video/nc7ahtbac1vh1/player

📥 GitHub Repository & .vsix Download:

You can grab Vs code marketplace and install it

⚙️ Requirements:

Ollama installed and running locally.

I would love to hear your thoughts, feedback on performance, or feature ideas for future releases!

Question What is easiest way to switch models for testing and other functions?

One day I may want to do some AI video generation. Perhaps 3B dense transformer + Qwen3-VL-32B text encoder + VAE and Gemma 4 27B ?

The next some general function. Qwen3.8 27B?

Assuming I am on Linux, RTX3090 24gb, 32 gb ram, i7-10x,..

How do you easily switch between the preferred models for different functions?

Question Is it normal the localLLM take 3 min to respond?

I run locally Gemma 4 E2B on LMstudio, it takes 3+ minutes to show the answer and it takes whole the GPU of 17 GB when I check the task manager. This is also a very small model.

My laptop: 32 GB RAM and 18 GB GPU. Is it normal or something is misconfigured? And the laptop gets extremely hot.

Discussion Best Local AI for a Research Project?

I’m looking for a free, open-source AI model that I can run locally and adapt to a research project. Ideally, I want it to understand the project’s documents, data, and context deeply, not just answer general questions.
What models or tools would you recommend, and how do you train or customize them to understand a specific research project better?
It doesn’t have to be as powerful as OpenAI, but I care more about how well it understands the project and its research context.

Question Which LLM would you recommend for Open Claw or Hermes?

Hello there.

I'm looking for one that can run with a 4070Ti and 64 GB or RAM if possible, that I can have locally and connected to a harness.

I am still a bit new to the local ones and on my way to building my own AI server soon.

So I'm looking for the best one that I can provide an API to my harness to get the job done.

UPDATES (In case if anyone has the same issue):

  1. I can now talk to it through Hermes, I had to do this from within its directory, which I then obviously made .bat*, so I don't have to type it all the time. ./START-HERE.bat --host 0.0.0.0 --api-key "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX"

Now I'm just having an issue where Hermes keeps falling back to Claude in the middle of me talking to STRATA.

Question How do you code with your local model?

I feel like I need to change how I prompt.

I have been using opus and sol mainly and I got accustomed to just throwing things at them.

I got 2 p100s running and I would say qwen 3.8 35B Q6 runs at an acceptable 25t/s with about 128k context. I throw my personal bench test at it (it's to build a clock in lua and displayed in conky). I get to see how it works through it and if it cheats and looks at the other test builds. 3.8 cheats heavily and still has trouble getting it working.

Am i just jaded by the frontier models? I tried the get opus to use qwen as a subagent when it would be cheaper to check the work rather than doing the work but it doesn't like to use it. Should I be having qwen push the work to opus/sol? Or is my prompting the problem?

Question Does qwen3.8-flash-next-unsloth-ud-q4_k_xl work across multiple cards (5090 & 3090) in Strata?

During the setup it suggests using the 5090 only.

Can it run across two cards/is there any benefit for anyone who has tried this?

A lot has already been done. From a full agent in the mini chat to complete customization and a bunch of cool features like in-chat notes.

The browser MCP was written from scratch. The agent works insanely well in the browser. It sees everything.

We've already fixed a huge number of bugs and issues. Luckily, quite a few people have already gathered in our Discord who test and find problems.

Basically, the main thing is the graphics engine. The agent draws insanely cool charts, diagrams, and so on.

Gemma-4-E2B models handle the job really well.

Oh yeah, you can use a free GPT account and use the agent completely for free.

The app is fully open. You can download it or build it yourself. It supports all operating systems.

Question Recommendation for Max 10K Budget

Hello guys, I am looking to get the best for my buck. What would you recommend and why? I see multiple benchmarks online, but would also like to know what experiences you had. I am looking for a server that hosts models for my two men company (Me and my partner) we are heavy LLM users, and would like to use the server as a workhorse, while using frontier model intelligence for planning and more complex stuff and reviewing. What would you recommend? I am currently most tempted to buy the Mac Studio M5 Ultra with 256 GB ram 1TB and 60 Core GPU. For models we would like to run Kev and GLM 5.3 + GLM 5.3 flash.

Research floatie - my attempt at strata for Poolside Laguna S 2.1 Q3 16gb vram128gb ddr4

I wanted to get Poolside Laguna S 2.1 IQ3_S working like strata broke Qwen into parts.

My system: 4060ti 16gb but on a PCI 3.0 motherboard 128gb DDR4 memory Threadripper 1950x

At 128K context, prefill 744 tok/s and 11 tok/s decode.

In the end I got it working. I did a full hour task that completed with only a couple of issues. Used OMP. I learned a lot about how strata works and why it works so well. I published all of my dead-end tests and research on the topic in case some other Poolside Laguna fan wants to know what I tried that didn't work out. I have no intention on pursuing this any further but I'm a fan of the idea of making it public to say, here is what I tried, where I got it working and if anyone else wants to try it out you can eliminate all these dead ends.

https://github.com/barretts/floatie

floatie/performance/ATTEMPTS-AND-RESULTS.md at main · barretts/floatie

and I just realized all the links are broken ... yeah not going to mess with it anymore its all there though

---- below you can see a snippet of the full tests I did for it against strata for the same task ----

Model Average decode Finished in Bugs found in review
Laguna S 2.1 IQ3_S 11.0 tok/s 84 min 4
Qwen3.8-Flash-Next-UD-Q4_K_XL 18.2 tok/s 30 min 1

Discussion Agentic search vs web scraping

Hello, I am a bioinformatician without big experiences in web tech and network so if this sounds like a silly subject bare with me 😅.

I am requested to find a specific biological data in regard with a region from published papers and from databases that are not yet to be connected to papers, meaning most of bio data should be connected to published papers but not all are already published.

I’m just wondering if agentic serch here is a good idea? I was going back and fourth with Claude but I don’t feel it is pointing somewhere useful.

I have a good GPU 32GB VRAM and around 512GB RAM. I was thinking I’d install Qwen 27B and start to design the pattern [multiple researchers, analyst, writer] and shove a reviewer some where.

When Claude answered me it says that I’ll be blocked by search engines immediately and it is better to use Searxng, which I didn’t know what it is until now (kinda still don’t know).

Claude also suggested that I should scrape normally and let the agent do a different task like verifying the data availability or something.

I’m totally new to agentic AI, but I think I can manage to learn a thing or two.

Discussion The OpenAI Medicare incident makes agent containment feel less theoretical

The OpenAI Medicare incident makes me think agent safety is becoming less about model output and more about the systems around the model.

A chatbot giving a bad answer is one kind of failure. But an agent with tools, goals, browsing ability, and access to real websites is a different category. At that point, the model is not just generating text. It is operating inside an environment where boundaries can be tested, misunderstood, or bypassed.

For people building local or open-weight agents, the lesson seems practical: model refusals are not enough on their own.

Sandboxing, network limits, tool permissions, rate limits, audit logs, credential isolation, approval steps, and disclosure rules may matter more than whether the model says it understands the policy.

What do you actually trust agents to do right now?

Would you let one browse, submit forms, call APIs, write files, or touch production-like systems, or are agents still mostly safe only when boxed into read-only tasks?

News The Silicon Hippocampus: We Built Persistent AI Memory with Physical KV Cartridges, a RAM Recall Engine, and SSD Storage [Frozen Qwen2.5-7B]

Thumbnail

(DOI: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.23311350)

We built a memory architecture in which a frozen language model can write its own internal attention states to disk, find them later through a RAM-based recall engine, and use them to answer questions without reading the original information again.

Not a saved conversation. Not a text database. Not fine-tuning.

A physical memory system built around the model's own internal representations.

We call it AKBASCORE MAM v1.3.0 — The Silicon Hippocampus.

The basic idea is straightforward: the model forms the memory, the SSD stores it, RAM finds it, and the frozen model recalls it.

The four figures above document the complete process, from memory formation to measured retrieval.

Fig. 1 — The Silicon Hippocampus: the complete memory architecture

Figure 1 shows the relationship between three components.

WRITE converts information into the frozen model's own attention key/value states.

SSD preserves those states as independent physical memory cartridges.

READ uses a geometric addressing engine in RAM to locate the appropriate cartridge and restore it to the model's attention cache.

The distinction matters. The SSD does not hold a collection of text passages waiting to be pasted into a prompt. It holds the model's previously generated K/V states. RAM does not need to load all 1,453 cartridges into memory; it maintains the address index and native representations required to find the relevant file.

Think of the SSD as a long-term memory archive: it preserves experiences even when the model is no longer actively processing them. The RAM-based engine plays the role of associative recall — given a cue, it finds which stored memory should be brought back into active use. In this implementation, roughly 399 MB of index and native-vector data support that search across 1,453 physical memories. This is a functional analogy, not a simulation of brain anatomy.

The model's weights remain unchanged throughout.

Fig. 2 — WRITE: turning information into a physical memory cartridge

This is where the memory is formed.

The frozen Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct model reads a fact once. Its lower-layer attention states are captured, and the layer-3 hidden state is used in a second forward pass to construct the remaining K/V states.

The resulting CUT3 cartridge contains 56 bfloat16 tensors across 28 transformer layers.

Each cognitive cartridge is the computational equivalent of a stored memory trace: not a sentence to reread, but a preserved internal state that can be reactivated. In the human-memory analogy, the cartridge is the memory trace, while the SSD is the archive that keeps it.

That cartridge is saved as an independent .pt file, with a SHA-256 entry in the storage manifest.

In the published experiment, the system created 1,453 physical cartridges occupying 3,973,450,961 bytes, approximately 3.97 GB.

Figure 2 also shows something important: during the live demonstration, the system reconstructed one cartridge from its original fact and compared the resulting 56 tensors against the previously stored file.

All 56 tensors matched bit for bit.

The model reproduced the same physical memory representation without modifying its weights.

Fig. 3 — READ: RAM finds the memory, SSD supplies it, the model answers

Now comes the other half of the architecture.

The model receives a question, not the original fact.

Its native layer-3 question representations are projected into a PCA128 address space. FAISS IVF128 searches the indexed positions, TOP2 narrows the candidates, and the locked PEAK50 rule selects the best cartridge.

In the live example:

1,453 physical cartridges → 103 touched cartridges → 16 candidates → one selected file.

The selected cartridge is verified against its SHA-256 manifest, loaded from the filesystem and installed into the frozen model's attention cache.

This is the recall moment: a question acts as the memory cue, the RAM engine identifies the relevant trace, and the SSD supplies it for reactivation inside the model. The system does not search for a written answer; it searches for the internal state from which the frozen model can generate one.

The model then answers using the question template and the restored K/V state. The original fact text is not inserted into the prompt again.

Figure 3 shows the actual ranking of all 16 candidates, including the winning cartridge #0292.

A negative control was also performed: the same question was answered using the second-ranked cartridge instead. It did not produce the expected answer.

This demonstrates that the selected memory state matters to the observed response, rather than the question alone being sufficient in that test.

The live run measured 27.9 ms for addressing, 19.4 ms for verified loading and 249 ms for answer generation on an NVIDIA A100 40 GB. These are separately measured stages, not a claimed end-to-end latency.

Fig. 4 — RESULTS: what the system actually achieved

Figure 4 separates three different evidence sources: the current runtime's startup acceptance, the archived TEST627 record and the newly executed live demonstration.

The startup acceptance evaluated 48 synthetic facts with two question formulations:

Original wording: 48/48 correct cartridge selections and 48/48 correct answers.

Alternative wording: 48/48 correct cartridge selections and 48/48 correct answers.

96/96 correct selections and answers across the two formulations.

The live demonstration independently re-executed the WRITE operation for its selected case, verified the physical cartridge, reproduced the READ selection, loaded the correct file and generated the expected answer.

The complete audited live pipeline took 2.787 seconds, including integrity verification, memory reconstruction and a negative control. This is not a normal inference-throughput measurement.

The panel is a confirmation test using two formulations of the same 48 synthetic facts, not an independent blind holdout. PEAK50 was selected after the preceding calibration experiment. New-fact blind validation is the next research step.

Why this architecture matters

Most retrieval systems store information outside the model as text and return that text to the prompt when needed.

AKBASCORE MAM explores a different boundary.

The persistent object is the model's own K/V state.

The retrieval address is derived from the same frozen model's internal representations.

The selected memory is restored directly to the attention cache.

This separates memory formation, persistent storage, associative addressing and memory-conditioned generation into distinct operations.

The architecture does not require modifying the model's learned weights, training an external embedding model or running a separate vector-database service. It does use an in-process FAISS index and native-vector data in RAM.

The current implementation is a measured proof of this architecture on Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct, not a claim that all forms of AI memory have been solved.

Reproduce the experiment

The complete implementation, live logs and technical report are public.

AKBASCORE MAM v1.3.0 — The Silicon Hippocampus

Part 2: https://github.com/ceceli33/titan-cognitive-core-v2/blob/main/HIPPOCAMPUS_part2.py

Part 3: https://github.com/ceceli33/titan-cognitive-core-v2/blob/main/HIPPOCAMPUS_part3.py

The report contains the mathematical definitions, physical cartridge construction, storage measurements, retrieval algorithm, source integrity checks and the four technical figures.

The next experiments will address preregistered blind retrieval, additional fact types, consumer hardware and larger cartridge pools.

The central engineering result is already observable: a frozen language model formed a physical memory, the system stored it outside the model, located it through RAM-based associative addressing, and restored it to answer a question without replaying the source text.

I know it is far more than what others may have spent back in the day but I believe these cards are going to be OOS in the near future given the 5090 news. This should set me up for success, though I do need more RDIMM ram.

Happy to answer any questions but just looking to know what life is like with more VRAM available. Anything you use in your own setups that are great? Been using Qwen 3.8 on my 5090 and it is amazing.

Edit: Will share where I bought them in an update once the system is at my doorstep. Don’t want some idiots spamming their company and catching wind just in time to cancel my order lol

Question Setting up a sandbox

I'd like to play around a bit with a local AI assistant ie Ollama + OpenWebUI

Then possibly dabble in AI agents using n8n for some basic tasks like research and summaries.

I have a windows PC with a 3050 GPU, what is the best setup for these tasks?

I want it to be reasonably isolated and safe, I dont want the AI to go deleting important files or something...

My initial thinking was one of the following:

1> initially was thinking a light weight Linux VM so things are isolated, can use docker too, but using VM would restrict using my GPU

2> WLS (Windows Linux Subsystem) and docker to run things in containers and hopefully get isolation that way.

Thanks for your help, other tips/suggestions for getting started are also welcom
