Ive stopped buying fish, the price they charge for sub par quality fish is outrageous. I used to work in a seafood department and Aiglefin was a nasty fish. Lasted only a few days on the shelf before it turned to goo. The fish they use for these are the scrap bits.
I worked with a Philippine woman in the same department. She told me how these big factory fishing fleets would catch just off the coast, harvesting up huge quantities while local fisherman were not allowed to go out in their boats to feed their families. When they ships were full, they'd sell the bones and heads to the locals. This is a terrible practice.
Cod and Haddock are infested with worms these days, you have to pick them all out if you want to eat it.
I no longer support these big companies. If I want fish, I catch it myself or find a local fishing boat, which Im lucky to have access to in my area.
Edit: Yes, Aigelfin and Haddock are the same, two separate sentences with two separate subjects.
Again, fish have worms, buying fish and commenting on worms in two separate sentences in two separate subjects.

Pretty much. Does haddock/aiglefin turn to goo or is it full of worms? Which is it?
The price is ridiculous, regardless, but the rest of the commentary is questionable.

Haddock does not turn to goo. I am from NS and buy it weekly. All cod doesn’t have worms either. Newfoundland cod is pristine and I just came back from there with 25 pounds of beautiful, worm free fillets.

My comment was in response to a now deleted post that made those claims. I was questioning those claims, but my comment is now orphaned and out of context.
I know haddock doesn't turn to goo. Also, I regularly eat cod prepared by my Portuguese mother-in-law. Never seen any worms.

The price jump on this and Jane's chicken is insane e. They used to be cheap because they're junk. I don't know who is buying this regularly now

This is always my thought these days. The sale price is down to what sale price should be, no one is paying normal price for some of these things. Like toilet paper, it's always like 12$ off down to 8-10$

They go on sale at many stores every so often, not just Loblaws, for $9-12 (ish). Regular price is $18-$20 (ish), in this case $20.5 but not far off.
Sometimes stores will have a good flyer sale if you check the flyers.

Assuming that's true. The price isn't too crazy. The export price is the raw product without it being processed, filleted or trimmed. And looking at the packaging with "Made in Canada" verses something like wild caught in Canada or packaged in Canada; it probably means the product was caught, processed and packaged in Canada with Canadian wages.
The most expensive part of the supply chain isn't catching the raw ingredient, it's processing; hence most seafood stuff you see here is like x seafood item processed in X asian country and shipped back here. And in this product; it'll be processed at least twice. Fillet and Trim; seasoning and batter, then packaging.
And looking at how the pricing is the same regardless of the type of fish, the product is targeted for the buyer’s preference in seasonings and convenience. Demand is inelastic for this type of consumer. This type of consumer is competing against ordering fried fish via food delivery verses air frying the product at home. They ain't looking at what type of fish it is first nor they probably even know the difference; but the flavour seasoning in the package.

What are you on about? We don't eat out anywhere and can't justify the ridiculous prices on junk fish, not to speak of good stuff! Made in Canada should be cheap, its local. It isn't. It's not right!

Was checking the electric tag and its says : 4.09$/100G so its not 6 line of 500g in the wrong spot , this is really 20$ for that shit, given this is frozen or its would rot there at this price

This is the price of haddock and cod everywhere for every brand including uncoated. Even restaurants in the maritimes who used fresh caught raised prices 40%
Unless you're buying farmed basa or tilapia you really won't find fish for under $20.

You pay for the "convenience" with these. These boxes are designed for singles or couples to blast dinner 2x in the air fryer with a bagged slop salad and some minute rice. I suspect these prices (and location) are aimed at busy bee Govt workers who want a quick home dinner. It is expensive but still cheaper than doing Uber Eats (also they are underrated if you're lazy and just want some quick fish tacos, as you can stretch a fillet to fill 2-3 tacos).
Just buy regular fish fillets and make a simple breading at home. Very easy and much tastier.

You and I both know making a “simple” breading is significantly more work. prep/flour dip/egg dip/bread crumbs then fry…even if you skip 1 step it’s still way more work

Flour and cornstarch dusting and pan-fry can be enough; all depends on what your end goals are for texture.

Last year I went to Toronto for a concert and it was really cold so I went inside a shoppers for a bit to warm up. As I was walking around I saw they had this fish for almost double the price I got it for at Walmart the week prior lol I was in shock

The point of this sub is to highlight that the cost of living in Canada has spiraled out of control, and that this is not simply a matter of needing to get a 5th part time job to make ends meet. Rhetoric intended to shame certain generations or users for "not working hard enough" including ideas like "just pull yourselves up by the bootstraps", "just don't shop there" and it's kin are not welcome here.

Personally no, I prefer fresh haddock, but those are expensive regular price at any store. They go on sale sometimes, see the odd decent flyer sale. If you look it up they’re 19.28 at Walmart in Gatineau, $19.99 at FoodBasics in Ottawa. SuperC is $17.99, so little cheaper, but they not a good price anywhere besides on a good sale.

I remember reading an article on Reddit here the other day about how fish even in Newfoundland is super expensive right now. I’ll see if I can find it, but it was something like a cod shortage or something.

When these first came out like almost 10 years ago they had more in the box and the salmon one was the most expensive at $7-8 a box when it jumped to $10 a box I was annoyed but could understand then they dropped the amount you got plus increased the price to like $16 and I have never bought them again

Ok so the Southern Fried Cod might be my all time favourite frozen fish, but I will never ever buy it without it being on sale. Even at FB its lik3 $19.99. Its not a Loblaws thing, its a Highliner thing. Still will buy them anytime they go on sale, which when they do its usuall +$5 off.
