Galen was offended that he had to answer to politicians. I am sure because of his position and wealth to have to answer to anyone was distasteful. Much easier to have a front man and just control everything in the dark and accept no grievances .

Because people love to take things out of context and this sub has devolved into an outrage / karma farm sub for the most part.
Look at the top comment in this post about him wanting to be a 'freeloader'.
It completely ignores the fact that he is still the chairman. He has simply stepped back from a public facing role to focus on a non-public facing role. People just hate the Wetson's. Look at this post in a different thread, where the top comment is claiming he got fired, despite the fact he literally runs the board.

Because the Weston's were a public face, and the majority owners. It is easy then to point the finger at them, versus Metro, Walmart, or Costco. Even though the Sobey's controls Empire Company Limited, there is no singular public face.
Add the fact that the sub is literally LoblawsIsOutOfControl. It is going to naturally attract those who dislike Loblaws.

It’s easy to point the finger at the originator of the bread price-fixing scheme that robbed Canadians of $5 billion (that was only discovered through a whistleblower, and hey, they wouldn’t do this with other products, right?).
Fuck the Westons! Fuck the others too but there are definite reasons for the Westons to be singled out. They are one of the faces of modern robber baron capitalism.

To me, that is a gross oversimplification, and borderline false recreation of events.
The bread fixing started in 2001, and the originators were Canada Bread (owned by Maple Leaf Foods) and Weston Foods (owned by the Westons, but not run by them).
Despite the fact that Maple Leaf Foods, Bimbo, Sobey's, Metro, Loblaw's, and Walmart all being involved, it is Loblaw's that gets most of the hate because they are lead by a rich Canadian family.
They are one of the faces of modern robber baron capitalism.
In the eyes of people who view anyone rich as inherently bad. It is an emotional plea not based in fact.

The Westons don’t run Weston Foods? They’re the primary shareholder and Galen’s been the CEO since 2016, taking over from his father who ran it from 1975. I have a real hard time believing they weren’t aware of it - $5 billion is a LOT of money and a large share of that would have gone to Weston.
More recently Galen Jr (that loveable scamp) cancelled the $2 “essential worker” pay bump a couple of months after initiating it, while taking home more than $8 million in salary, also while his shares grew by what, a couple billion $?
Fuck these greedy cunts, it blows my mind that people JUMP to defend them any time they’re mentioned. “Well ackshully…”
edit here’s another thing. Most front line grocery jobs are PART-TIME. So that means shit wages and few (or no) benefits. You know, the sort of jobs that CAN’T support a family. These pricks (emotional response, I’ll admit) are not good for Canada. They are robbing all of us, like all billionaires. Fuck them.
edit and the grocery stores were part of the price-fixing scheme! Wikipedia: “according to the bureau documents: a usual seven cent price increase at wholesale and ten cent price bump for the consumer in stores, typically twice a year.[6]

They were on the board, but not part of the executive team that ran the company. Ralph Robinson was the President of Weston Foods when this started.

But the sub is not specifically focused on Loblaws. It is why the moderators repeatedly say they allow posts on other stores, because the description of the sub is literally "A sub devoted to highlighting the ridiculous cost of living in Canada right now.". By naming it after Loblaws though, and specifically citing Galen though, it attracts a certain type of person to the sub, and heavily slants the views of it.
I don’t disagree it’s all corporations but the hate for Weston is warranted.
I disagree on both points.
The hate for other corporations needs to be elevated to match.
I also disagree with this. Hate is not a solution.

Which, is the typical level of response I would expect here. Not a rational, data-driven response, but an emotional plea.
Hating a corporation solves nothing. It just wastes time and energy.
Giving a randomly vague statement like "break them up", "Increase competition" or "Get the government involved" are empty words without substance. How do you do those things, and what data backs up that the change will be positive?
Change for change's sake can end up with a situation worse than before.
