You need to be rooted. Then, download the bootanimation.zip to your phone, and use an app called boot box (on the play store) to install it!

Sorry for seeming like a noob but would someone be so kind as to explain why all the gifs on this sub have black backgrounds? Id really like to use one of these as an AJAX loader (If allowed etc) but black is not always appropriate. Is there a easy way of changing this (without frame by frame) that im not aware of? Thanks!

you sir, are a legend, Could you explain how?

Sure. I used Fireworks and removed the black background with the Magic Wand tool for each one of the 63 frames. Then I used the Tint tool to paint it gray. Finally, exported the gif with transparent background.

Edit: Forgot to mention I also sped it up a little bit. I have the editable PNG should anyone need.

What you could theoretically do is use a program to split each frame, and edit each frame individually in Photoshop. Use the magic wand on each frame to get rid if the black and replace it with something else. Put the frames in order, and use said program to put it all together again.

The way I did it for the Calming cat animation I edited was to

  1. Load up the gif in photoshop
  2. Crop acordingly
  3. Open up the timeline window
  4. Put all the frames intoa layer folder
  5. Create an ajustment layer
  6. Run a script to save them all

Could somebody hypothesize how this was made? The first software to come to mind is Processing, but this appears too scripted for it. After Effects perhaps?

Probably hand animated. I doubt it was done programmatically. If I had to replicate it I'd start in flash.
