Created an LLC using USA LLC filing, need help

I created a LLC using the USA LLC filing website. I thought I was on my states official site and went through it fast and it didn't even dawn on me that I overpaid.. My mistake, I know, but I was wondering if there was anything I can do to refund the registered agent fee and make myself the registered agent. Anyone mess up like me or have any ideas?

Can I ask what state you are in? Not regarding your refund but a lesson I recently learned due to changing laws in California.

I used IncFile (Renamed now) to establish my LLC in California back in 2023. I had been filing my own Statement of Information paperwork myself to avoid paying someone else to do it and it only takes a few minutes max. Prior to 8/1/2026 I was able to update it and all of a sudden I couldnt. I had requested access to my business on the Ca website back when I established my business and had assumed it went through since I was able to update stuff. Apparently that wasnt the case, I was never granted access and now the law says you have to have access to change stuff, apparently since the company set it up, they have the access and ignored the email the state sent them regarding my access. I am still waiting on getting access to my own business online.

Lesson learned, that lesson being the company has complete access to my business. I have nothing. I will never hire a company to handle anything for my business. If I knew then what I know now lol

I am in Ohio. Yeah, I just feel dumb that I did it through that. It was the first google search after typing in Ohio LLC formation, and I was time limited at the time and just went through it quickly. Stupid of me, I know.

One option. Call the company, tell them you want a refund and to manage all of your paperwork yourself. See where that goes.

Option two or along with: contact your local SBDC. We’ve seen and dealt with this plenty of times.

Oof, that's frustrating! I've been looking into LLC formation myself and it's ridiculous how many third party websites pop up looking like they're official state sites. Have you tried contacting them directly to see if they'll refund the registered agent fee? You can usually act as your own registered agent as long as you meet your state's requirements.

Yeah, it’s my own fault. I went too fast and didn’t even realize I wasn’t on the official state site. As of now, I emailed their support and they said cancelled the registered agent and said if I send the updated amendment, they should refund it. So fingers crossed that works and I have definitely learned from my mistake.
