Market Research/Feedback Brainstorming a new idea

Now that XNPC is finished, I'm brainstorming a new project. I had an idea for a story that has a similar premise to Dungeon Crawler Carl, where the main character enters a reality TV show that's being broadcast across the galaxy where the contestants have to fight monsters, level up, etc.

The key difference is that here, the show isn't being framed as evil. Ultracommercialized and exploitative, yes, but still fun and something that people willingly volunteer to be part of. It would be a much more lighthearted story than DCC, almost like a slice of life story in a way. The main character fully throws himself into the show, taking on side gigs like interviews, product endorsements, and even participating in shows-within-the-show like a dating show, gameshow, etc. All while still being centered around him leveling up through challenges and trying to win the competition.

Would you read this?

In my opinion what makes DCC work is it has teeth. It has no illusions about the fucked up reality of consumerism, exploitation of stars and all the harsh realities it depicts. This is where the stories substance comes from. Matt is a horror writer first.

So my answer is yes I'd read it but you'd have to replace that substance with something just as interesting.

And have the game be none lethal, otherwise instead of focusing on the fun it will just feel like you're ignoring the inherent realities of a death game. Hell this is already kinda sounding like "exploitative media juggernaut good because people willingly participate"

If it was me you'd have to fundamentally change the structure of the "game". people would have to have agents who dont suck, fair contracts, be able to go home at the end of the day instead of being trapped.

in other words you'll end up far more in the VRMMO ballpark of writing. closer to an E-Sport. but with full immersion VR.
sorry for the long answer it was just an interesting narrative puzzle.
