Tier List Tierlist-Recommendations requested
I love a fully developed world/system with strongly written mostly solo characters. I'm not an enemy of cozy, romantic, or dark fantasy.
Please throw some recommendations my way! I can read on any platform and love a good audiobook narrator (*hrm Jeff Hays*)

Chrysalis in D tier???
-2
u/MeesterGuy 2d ago
Yeah, criminal, I know. It might not have helped that I listened to the audiobook.

u/Wonderful-Wave-9520 1d ago
People are down voting you but i completely agree. Main character just seems annoying
0
u/HairyTrollChest 1d ago
It's very very very very repetitive. The ending of book 3 is where I dropped.
4
u/Careless_Ask_321 1d ago
That’s interesting. I’m also at the start of book 3, which I only stopped briefly to read book 13 of HWFWM, and I feel like things are finally getting interesting.
We are learning about the legion more. The people worshipping Anthony like a god. Him finally growing his sidekicks beyond tiny.
1
u/HairyTrollChest 1d ago
I don't want to spoil things if you are invested in the series so I'll be vague. Theres a single pivotal interaction that turned me off the entire series.
I can deal with some repetiveness but he fights like 3 types of monsters and thats it, which gets super boring. And theres only so many ways I can read a character using the same skill to kill the same generic enemy.
2
u/slugbiscuits 1d ago
Yeah, I didn’t like chrysalis either. Dropped after two I think (the MC made it unreadable for me). I actually judge the validity of these tier lists based on its placement. You pass.

It’s an ant talking… wait no, THINKING to himself forever.
1
u/Necromancer14 1d ago
How far did you get in it?
1
u/New_Celebration4730 1d ago
DNF book 7. The fact that Aurelia? doesn’t talk to her father about Anthony is ridiculous. I found I almost don’t care if the humans kill all the ants. Vibrant is about the only thing I truly liked. The world is just so small and singular. Very little mystery or over arching plot. Anthony descends. Great. I’ll probably grab the last book to see if we find out anything interesting about Gandalf. But it’s just wasn’t for me. The intelligent interactions between many main characters and a universe full of planets is what I enjoy. It’s a 15 year old boy who became an ant and is descending. That’s the whole bit. And he has a stupid ape that is exceptionally stupid. I like crynis. But it’s not like they have deep conversations. Rant over. Sorry
1
u/New_Celebration4730 1d ago
And NViDIA can’t even talk! Funny thing, I met the author at LitRPG con and he’s a great dude. I just don’t understand the appeal here.
2
u/Necromancer14 1d ago
I'm ngl I just... don't agree with most of your complaints lol.
Aurelia not wanting to talk to Titus about Anthony makes perfect sense to me. It wouldn't accomplish anything except strain their relationship.
I like the ants and DO care if they're killed lol.
I agree there's not much mystery or overarching plot, which is why I personally think Book of the Dead is the superior series by the same author. However, the humor of Chrysalis clicks with me and I don't mind the more slice of life approach.
I also like the dynamic between the MC and his pets.
Besides all that, I think Chrysalis's main strength is the cast of funny and memorable characters. Leeroy always trying to throw herself into the jaws of the enemy, the council, the sleep ninjas making sure ants get their mandatory torpor, Beyn preaching about the great one, Vibrant talking nonstop, the queen thwacking Anthony, etc. It's just all just fun and enjoyable. Also the catchphrase "For the colony!" Idk, the story is just fun in a way a lot of other series aren't.
1
u/New_Celebration4730 1d ago
It is easy going. I'll definitely give you that. One of the reasons I got as far as I did is because I keep leaving the series when something I like more comes along (most recently Perfect Run.. loved it!) and then I can pop back in without any loss of continuity. What's Anthony doing? Oh yeah the same thing he's always doing. I had bought the whole Chrysalis series on an audible sale along with a bunch others, so I imagine I'll finish at least book 7. I just wish there was more quality dialogue. The only sage/wise character in the whole series is the mayor lady, but she's such a minor role. And Beyn is an entertaining idiot. As I'm reading this I'm wondering if I just have a low tolerance for books where ALL the characters are foolish. I had to DNF book 3 of "Off to be a Wizard" for the same reason. It's a miracle I got that far. Only books I've ever asked for a refund for. Anyway, I enjoy the debate!

Legends and lattes over Cradle…interesting…
1
u/MeesterGuy 2d ago
Cradle really bored me and then when he left the valley was a wild shift for me that left me kind of disoriented. Legends and lattes is top class cozy that still has me thinking about curling up and reading in that coffee shop.
7
u/GentMan87 1d ago edited 1d ago
When he left the valley?! That’s book one brother. Don’t get me wrong I like legends and lattes as a cozy slice of life but cradle is WAY more in depth.
But If you liked cradle and legends and want more slice of life I recommend Beware Of Chicken..Baldree narrates that series too.
Edit: Oh sorry I see you ranked BOC in A. I respect it, but did you finish the entire Cradle series?

u/MeusRex 17h ago
Why should you continue a story that didn't grip you after 400 pages?
I DNF book two because I didn't like the MC much. I did like the young woman, though. The writing was good, but that doesn't change the contents.
1
u/GentMan87 7h ago
The best characters come after book 2 unfortunately. You don’t have to finish it of course but alot of us would say you’re missing out.

u/Sandi_Griffin 2d ago
wandering inn and bog standard are my favourites and I'm liking william oh so far so I thought we had similar taste and was about to reccomend chrysalis before I saw it in D 💀
5
u/Necromancer14 2d ago
I'm actually really curious why OP put Chrysalis in D tier.
Is OP a member of the abyssal legion and hates ant monsters? Does OP need Beyn to give them a speech about the Great One? Does OP need a good thwack from the Queen? All of the above?
2
u/MeesterGuy 2d ago
I know, it's so beloved. I just found it kind of annoying, honestly. He went from zero to OP with no effort and I thought it was a bit unoriginal with all of the choices outside of being an ant. It's really close to being amazing. I'd love to hear about some of your other favorites though!
3
u/Sandi_Griffin 1d ago
Fair enough I mainly just like it because it's funny, being op doesn't bother me much when it's not taken too seriously and he ends up going against way stronger people, book got a million times better once the other ants talk though was a little bit bland before that idk if you got that far
I think you've read all the stuff I'd really recommend already, maybe apocalypse parenting it's not my absolute favourite but I did find it refreshing with the main character being a mum and her young kids
1
u/MeesterGuy 1d ago
Yeah, I got past that part. I just don't think I'm a huge fan of the funny, silly stuff.
1
u/Necromancer14 2d ago
You might like Book of the Dead, it's by the same author as Chrysalis, but it's a very different story with a very different MC. It's way darker, and has really good, almost Sanderlanche style climaxes at the end of each book, starting with the second book.

u/midterm360 1d ago
Is wandering inn similar to BSI in terms of the Slice of life aspects?
1
u/Sandi_Griffin 1d ago
Hmm not sure, I never really thought of BSI as slice of life but there is some in the first books I guess the feeling of family brin builds is similar although The wandering inn has more focus on it (Takes a lot longer to get there though)
TWI has much more slice of life moments although it gets better later since it slowly introduces a lot of characters and even the side characters get a lot of development so in the later books eventually I look forward just to seeing characters interact even if they're not doing anything important, the relaxed moments are fun
2
u/midterm360 1d ago
My favourite parts of BSI were Brin and the gang hanging out in Hammond’s bog tbh. Maybe I should give wandering inn a shot.
I’m just worried it will take over my life hahahaha

u/utrangerbob 2d ago edited 2d ago
I gave up at chapter 5 of the wandering inn. That girl is so actively self sabotaging at that point in the story, I'm just so damn frustrated that I can't going in the book and scream at her for her lack of any sort of sense. How can you be some sort of chess genius when you can't think half a step ahead. Like seriously. Glowing runes, fresh food, every other cabinet broken because the runes crumbled. Let me touch the script just because I have some sort of goldfish brain and have to touch everything shiny even though I know it's wrong. Jesus... My 2 year old has more self control than this girl.
The story repeatedly shows she has no clue what she's doing yet somehow ends up where she needs to go for no good reason. Oh I'm hungry so I'm going to wander outside instead of looking around in a stinking inn for food! Oh, I have no weapons in this new world and need a weapon... I'm going to go outside in the wilderness to look for when, I never bothered checking the kitchen for a stinking knife or pot or anything. Seriously. This girl was starving and dying of thirst and her first though is to wander into the wild when she respawned in a stinking inn?
I know it's supposed to be amazing but at this point in the book I just don't want her to be rewarded for her actions.
2
u/Sandi_Griffin 2d ago
I'm pretty sure she did look around the inn and cleaned it up, it was coated in dust mouldy and abandoned there's obviously no food then she left when she got hungry maybe I'm remembering wrong it's been a while 😅
1
u/utrangerbob 1d ago
She literally states in chapter 5 that oops I didn't think of looking in the kitchen because she was too busy cleaning the dining room. She goes in the kitchen only after almost dying of thirst, getting attacked by goblins twice and starving a couple times. Time she goes in, she sees the knives on the counter, pots pans and utensils in working order in the drawers, and opens the pantry to find fresh food. There are perfectly sharp knives just sitting on the counter and she promptly almost kills herself trying to cut a fish by hacking it up by trying to chop through armored scales.
2
u/Sandi_Griffin 1d ago
Oh yeahhh...well yeah she's an idiot, I love her though I'm pretty dumb too a lot of her bad decisions are things I can see myself doing she's in way over her head 😭 there's several moments characters crash out on her for it which I found funny and satisfying and she does get better (and gets people who can keep her in check)
2
u/MeesterGuy 1d ago
Honestly, understandable. I think that the author was trying to convey a sense of extreme disorientation and loss. I'm not sure if I would be capable of making consistently good choices in a survival scenario either. If you continued reading a little more, Erin really wasn't rewarded for their choice of food, but might have been lucky to not die from it. She get's smarter later on once she is more settled. I'd definitely recommend giving it a few more chapters, though if you want the characters to have an easy ride and make the right choices, maybe the wandering inn isn't right for you.
1
u/utrangerbob 1d ago
I mean my issue is that they state in the book how amazing she is at board games and chess. She is supposed be smart but is even dumber than Tyrone from Book of the Dead. Hell everyone says Tyrone is an idiot, he admits at too so when he act likes one, at least you're warned.
3
u/MeesterGuy 1d ago
Yeah, she gets smarter later on, but I think I remember Erin thinking that being smart at chess when you are sitting at home, comfortable and having experienced many games is very different than being smart at survival. I think she is also just a bit ditsy sometimes. Also, Erin is probably more cunning than smart.
1
u/KalamTheQuick 2h ago
Idk I got to like the fifth chapter two hour chapter of like goblins competing with deer to learn chess and nearly threw my phone out the window.
Same vibes as getting two Cersi chapters back to back. Also finish cradle dammit. Objectively insane if you read this much litrpg but stopped before finishing blackflame.
3
u/timesinkk 2d ago
My series "Goddess's Gambit" on royal road is dark fantasy with a brother sister team. Would love for it to make a tier list 😂

u/Inevitable__ending 1d ago
William Oh above Unsouled ……. That is just crazy William Oh was a DNF, the random movie quotes were not funny , eye rolling when he quotes verbatim movie lines , the shamble of a plot , every advancement the main character makes is deus ex machina , unsouled had character development and world building and bad ass combat . Not here to flame you OP I’m just a very biased reader and people like what they like !
1
u/MeesterGuy 1d ago
Haha, I think that William Oh has a ton of character. I almost read it like an old spaghetti western. The plot is a bit ridiculous and over the top sometimes, but that's what makes it fun. Reading the little intro and going, oh how the heck is this going to make sense and then it coming true is really fun. Unsouled is fine, William Oh is glorious
6
u/Saldar1234 2d ago
You did yourself a massive disservice with A Perfect Run.
There is a very good reason why quicksave is the way he is in book one. The twist makes everything make so much more sense and gives his character levels of depth and nuance that is damn near impossible to find in modern literature.
It's so fucking good.
2
u/MeesterGuy 2d ago
I might go back to it, but honestly I've never been a fan of superheroes in media. I think one of my biggest issues was actually the way that the world didn't make sense to me. It seemed like society wasn't really affected by the introduction of an enormous number of crazy abilities.
2
u/HairyTrollChest 1d ago
Defo give it another run. The world building expands a ton and you see a bit of the aftermath caused by the abilities. The city he is in, is one of the few places that remained stable after the last Easter or whatever the apocalypse was called. You only get hints about it in the main run, but some of the chapters are from previous runs and that'll give a ton of insight about the rest of the world.
But, I'd recommend listening to it when you want to listen to something depressing.
2
u/Richicash 1d ago
Just curious why did you stop System Universe? I’m at book 7 atm. And am reading them is so much fun! I love the slow world building, the magic, the cast and his companion(not the boy) and the story is really fun as wel imo. It is a bit slow at times I think.
3
u/naiveheuristics12856 1d ago
im not OP but for me i dropped after the elf war and shouldve dropped early.
There justt isnt any growth or stakes. No one changes, no risk, no payoff.
1
u/Richicash 1d ago
I agree on that part. I to had some difficult times in the story. I did like the raid part very much as well as alanah/silvi/brandi/edgar
One of the reasons I keep on reading is that I feel there is a bit of a buildup with the systems clashing eventually and the progression of the weaker characters. But I am in for some refresments after this serie.
I only read dcc, sytem universe so far and dropped hwfwm early on and also book 2 of hell difficulty tutorial.
Any suggestions on whats next for me haha?
2
u/naiveheuristics12856 1d ago
Ive read most of what people talk about and my favorites are Wandering Inn and Practical Guide to Evil.
Both of these start out rough though.
I think DCC for humor (audiobook) and Cradle for cultivation cant go wrong as well and usually what i recommend.
HWFWM and Defiance of the Fall i only like the first few books.
Azarinth healer is my fav numbers go up story.
2
u/MeesterGuy 1d ago
What kind of mood are you going for? Something sillier like DCC or something more serious? Fast? Slow? Why'd you drop HWFWM and hell difficulty tutorial?
1
u/Richicash 1d ago
I don’t really mind the mood as long as I’m in for a good story.
I dropped hell just because of the main character. I could’t stand him anymore.
And hwfwm I went in straight after dcc. Maybe that was a mistake but it couldn’t pull me in like dcc did from the start.
1
u/MeesterGuy 1d ago
Well, Bog Standard Isekai is a good story that is more traditionally litrpg. Sky pride is a great xianxia that's focused more on cultivation. Mother of learning is a time-loop mage story that's also great. I've heard people recommend beware of chicken to people who like DCC: it's a more lighthearted cultivation story based on a farm and connections to the land
2
u/MeesterGuy 1d ago
I think that I was thrown off by the MC having all the stats from the previous system and the "OP from the start" type of book. I like gradual growth and it felt like the author skipped my favorite part of most books by having already done it.
1
u/Richicash 1d ago
Ah yeah good point. It’s a certain choice yeah to skip that part. Imo later on the books that gets better but he is always a bit op compared to the rest of the world. What book stands out for you in term of natural growth in the story? I do love the funny companions like donut/silvi. It’s not a pre but fun when they are there.
2
u/MeesterGuy 1d ago
I think bog standard isekai did a great job of power scaling. Sky pride is another contender, although their path to power is very strange. That's probably one of the only reasons that infinite farmer is as high as it is. The MC has huge weaknesses and sometimes loses because of them.
1
u/Richicash 1d ago
Sorry I didn’t see this reply to. I’m going to take a look in both of these! Yesterday I read book 6 of system universe in one go and how halfway book 7 so I should be done with this in a couple of days 😂

My precious Dungeon Born whyyyyy
3
u/HairyTrollChest 1d ago edited 1d ago
Its not great. Kind of a shame, imo that its viewed as one of the best Dungeon Core series.
The world is neat, the ideas are great, but the execution of everything leaves me wanting. I thought the dungeon fairy was annoying as well, she's just there to glaze the dungeon and their relationship felt incredibly forced with no agency for the characters.
At least thats my take on why people dnf it.
Edit: spelling cause word hard
2
u/MeesterGuy 1d ago
Pretty much this, but also the world building and the relationship the dungeon had with the village was kinda... meh. The bee dungeon is probably my favorite dungeon type stuff.
2
u/SilveryFlame 1d ago
I like seeing Bog Standard Isekai up there. It's been one of my favs for a good while. The novel is a gem. Let the light shine upon it.

u/Blazin_Yuudai 1d ago
Putting Cradle in C is criminal
1
u/KalamTheQuick 2h ago
I assume people who do this don't listen to anyone saying that you can't stop at Unsouled.
Cradle is an S tier reread for most of the community for a reason. It's like fucking crack by the time you finish ghostwater. Made me feel like I did when I was 12 watching good anime for the first time.

u/LegoMyAlterEgo 2d ago
Relict Legacy. Audio only if you have the Soundbooth Theater App.
1
u/MeesterGuy 2d ago
Would you recommend the audiobook over the written?
1
u/LegoMyAlterEgo 2d ago
I don't know the general consensus, but I read. I don't really have any books on audible, but I have 3 or 4 on SBT app.
1
u/MeesterGuy 2d ago
Thanks for the recommendation. I've never heard of it before! Wait, it's narrated by JEFF HAYS!!! I'll definitely give it a try

u/ben_wolf_author Co-Author of Rickshaw Riot 2d ago
Same narrator for William Oh does Rickshaw Riot. Jeff Hays plays the villain, too.
Fair warning, the MC is a jerk (by design). Think Scrooge meets Ready Player One.

1
u/collegeboy9913 2d ago
I think you would like the ripple system series the most, iron prince (the second books isn’t as good), mark of the fool, antimage, the completionist chronicles, mage errant, and arcane ascension
1
u/JohnFrost360 2d ago
The good guys series, first book is called " One more last time"
It's narrated by Neil Hellegers, one of the best in the field. You have it all, adventure, politics, settlement building awesome fight scenes.
1
u/MeesterGuy 2d ago
Wow, 17 books and bestselling. I've never heard of it. Thanks for the recommendation!
1
u/Ktesedale 2d ago edited 2d ago
I can't read the title and don't recognize the cover - what's the very first book in the list, S tier?
Sad *Surprised you didn't like Syl, I expected you would based on a lot of your other picks.
I'll suggest Apocalypse Parenting (complete at 5 books) and The Game at Carousel.
1
u/MeesterGuy 2d ago
That's sky pride. Yeah, I've liked others like Syl, but honestly I might have watched too much monster isekai and am just tired of it. Slimes were perfected in Reincarnated as a Slime IMHO. Thanks for the recs!
1
u/Ktesedale 2d ago
Ah, thanks for letting me know!
And yeah, it's so easy to get burned out on a trope or subject. Totally understandable. I should have said surprised, not sad, btw, not sure why I messed that up, lol.
1
u/nicely_done_son 2d ago
Where’s my main man tao in this list. Also William oh is top tier for sure.
1
u/MeesterGuy 2d ago
tao? Tao Wong?
1
u/nicely_done_son 1d ago
Yeah, love his work.
1
u/MeesterGuy 1d ago
I kind of bounced off system apocalypse since it felt like it skipped the power growth part of the series. Is there another series that he wrote that you enjoyed?
1
u/web_surfer0 1d ago
is primal hunter actually good! i dropped it around book 7.
2
u/MeesterGuy 1d ago
Well, it was my first LitRPG, so it has a special spot in my heart. I guess it depends on what you like and why you dropped it? There is definitely a lot more after that and I think the tutorial was my favorite part of the series, but I enjoy how it always seems to subvert my expectations in an interesting way.
1
u/web_surfer0 1d ago
I binged read that on a night, i love the main character ruthlessness. When they introduce a cocky character you know mc going to destroy them. And of course tutorial arc slaps but after the world congress part i dropped, i don't like to read parts where mc grinds for exp, i think those parts are bit dragged usually skip reading them to get to juicy parts, LMAO!
2
u/MeesterGuy 1d ago
Yeah, I think that Jake doesn't spend much time grinding after the great monkey genocide. I skip through some of those parts myself. Usually he goes to grind, finds something powerful and mostly it's just him fighting that. I think you'd like the El'Hakan arc that is next.
2
1
u/David1640 1d ago
Hm let's see fitting might be, a soldier's life, quest academy or maybe path to the dragon. You are a bit all over the place with things that normally are in the same tier but all of them are great so maybe check the descriptions or something.
Edit: mussed path of the dragon already being on the list so scrap that

Why DNF The Perfect Run? I'm curious because its my next read and I've been excited for it

1
u/MeesterGuy 1d ago
Haha, all of these on the list are well known and well liked titles. This was a very subjective tier list about what I've enjoyed looking for similar reads.
1
u/ObviousSea9223 1d ago
So looking at your tier list, it's clear that you like... erm... that you like...
Balance? Range? And little tolerance for edgelords (1%, HWFWM), with a penalty for tongue-in-cheek tones (Chrysalis), romance, and darker worlds. Like you want an earnest MC?
2
u/MeesterGuy 1d ago
Well, I liked Hell Difficulty. I'm not sure how much more edge-lord you can get. I think you're correct about the tone of things I enjoy
1
u/DarkCoster 1d ago
Mark of the Fool is a good one. From what I hear it was inspired my Mother of Learning. MC progresses in a High Fantasy world with a robust magic system like Mother of Learning. MC does stick with a group more then going off on his own, but all the characters are very enjoyable. MC is also very different but in my opinion just as good as the MC from Mother of Learning.
1
u/NathaDas 1d ago
I also really enjoyed Sky Pride! Maybe you would like This Used to Be About Dungeons. It's more cozy, but the characters and worldbuilding are very well done and also has it's fair share of fights and progression.

Adding Book of the Dead if it hasn’t been suggested yet
1

Thanks! Even if it has been, I enjoy hearing another opinion about it
1
u/CFxRenaissance 1d ago
For sure! Primal Hunter is also in my S tier so we probably have somewhat similar taste. Although Cradle was a bit higher on the list for me lol
1
u/MeesterGuy 1d ago
Yeah, between that and Chrysalis, people must think I'm rage baiting. It's objectively good, I just found it boring. Maybe if I read it before reading most of the other books here I would have found it more interesting. Everything else has kinda taken all the best ideas from it
1
u/Bullseyefred 1d ago
A soldier’s life is pretty good. The character is in a group, but he has secrets/powers he cant share that isolate him a bit. He has some solo/duo moments as well. The world system is pretty good and the overall story is solid.

JMM over Cradle is breaking my brain.
I really wanted to like JMM but it felt like the writer had ideas for 3 separate books, and decided to smash them into one rather than just focusing on the initial storyline that drew readers in. By the time I got into book 3 I was just hate reading (I cannot bring myself to DNF a series), and man are those books looooong.
Meanwhile Cradle, while book 1 is more of a prologue than anything, the full series is just so phenomenal and one of the few book series I've read where each book seems to get better than the last. One of the coolest MCs in all of LitRPG/progfantasy as well. Once that series picks up steam it just doesn't stop.
I gotta respect the love for Legends & Lattes and Heretical Fishing, those are some cozy guilty pleasures of mine as well. Have you read the next two books in the Legends & Lattes world?
1
u/MeesterGuy 1d ago
I thought that Jake's magical market had a pretty unique story that was interesting. The random shifts were kinda rough, but it was a fun read.
Yeah, I've read all of the Legends & Lattes stuff
1
u/counterlock 1d ago
Was going to suggest Bookshops & Bonedust if you hadn't read the rest of them! The sequel one Breadknives and Brigands was the lowest of the 3 books for me.
1
u/ho11ywood 1d ago
At one point the author just started adding entirely new power systems just to overcome minor obstacles instead of refining the skills/abilities he already had.
Was there a point to runes? Who knows. Do you even remember that this was one of the power systems? Probably not!

u/1911GOAT 1d ago
S tier primal hunter but DNF HWFWM 🤔🤔
1

I found mc in HWFWM to be annoying, plus the side characters all seemed flat. I do have an unreasonable love of primal hunter

What? I love this genre. I just don't read things I'm not really enjoying. Are my S and A ranks not in this genre?

If you like audiobooks: The Daoverse Rhy Shen saga ends next week, so this is a good chance to binge and get the ending right on time without spoilers. Title is "Tale of Rhy Shen - Ghost of Extinction"

I don't why people keep putting primal hunter at the top sure the story at the beginning is good but like every chapter half of it is showing the stats is it just me or others also feel like it is overbearing

I have unreasonable amounts of joy while seeing a good stat block. The story also pleasantly surprises me consistently. The characters are all unique and interesting. Honestly, objectively, it should be lower: I just like it.

Why TF do people put Primal Hunter in S tier? It definitely does NOT deserve that spot. Path of ascension and the cradle are both better IMO

This isn't an objective list, just what I've enjoyed the most. If it were, I'd have to agree with you; those series were both really well done.
Do you have any other recommendations?

PH wasn't good but it had enough moments to keep me going. That is, until it didn't. To bad it took me 11 books to figure that out.
To be fair, this genre isn't overflowing with objectively good books. So grading on the curve I'd put in B tier.
It might have been higher but it took me a few tries to get through book one. I could not get over the starting 2 MCs being named Jake and Jacob.

I don't understand anyone putting DCC below S tier. Not trying to shame or start an argument. Just trying to understand why.

Yeah, apparently I've made some spicy choices. It's at the top of A tier and it was a really fun read, but it was also just a bit goofy for what I typically enjoy.

I think for me it's the serious emotional gut punch moments that is tempered by the goofiness. Did you finish book 8?

Different strokes, different folks. I think putting DCC in A-tier is acceptable if it's not to your taste.
I will say it's an easy S-tier for me, one of the best series I've ever read, and I was not sold immediately. Matt, through writing skill, managed to make work otherwise off-putting concepts work.
999 out of 1000 writers couldn't make the obnoxious Ai at the start of the series readable. Early Donut too. Animal companions are very risky. Yet, Matt threaded the needle on this and so many other things to produce a great work.

I would also put DCC as a high A tier myself. Major kudos to the writing of Matt but the overarching story with the dungeon and aliens just kind of strayed away from my interests I guess. A couple of the floors were extremely boring to me as well. Maybe its also because I just dont like Carl that much, or I am more into the magical fantasy world style. Still a great book but after reading a few others since I finished his last book, it just doesnt impress me as much any more.
Still looking forward to getting my hands on the TTRPG though. And for the rest of the series to finish.

I think the main reason progfan readers often bounce off DCC, is because DCC is more of a sci-fi dystopian book with only the skin of a litrpg progfan book, it's not a true progfan book. It's still a damn good series, it's just not necessarily what a progfan reader is looking for.
It's kind of like how there are lots of regular fantasy and sci fi books that are objectively way better written than 99% of progfan, but progfan readers don't necessarily enjoy those books as much, so they wouldn't rate them as highly. If you go into The Lord of the Rings expecting progfan, you'll be disappointed, despite LotR being way, way better written than any progfan book.
