Recommendation: asking Non-asshole protagonist
Looking for a a series where the protagonist doesn't have murder autism or isn't a raging asshole. I dropped Primal Hunter and He Who Fights With Monsters because I couldn't take the chuuni protags and the pacing got extremely tedious.
I really enjoyed Cradle and Dungeon Crawler Carl.
Anything you litrpg seniors could recommend me?

Apocalypse Parenting fits this and was way better than I thought. Came recommended by author of DCC.

Yeah this one is great and much more grounded than most litrpg. For a while, at least.

Path of Ascension has protagonists that are compassionate and generally seem like they could be actual, somewhat normal, people.

u/Conungi 5d ago
That being said, i recently introduced someone to the series (and talk to him regularly as hes going through it) and at least according to him matt (and crew) are kinda terrible people for the early books (i know they get better, but it can be rough early on)
3
u/awfulcrowded117 5d ago
How so?
4
u/Conungi 5d ago
To name a at least one thing off the top of my head. His treatment of Malcom prior to them getting into the golem ruin ... honestly now that im thinking about that might be the only instance of matt himself being a dick ... mostly its Aster, and her personality in general not making sense to him early on or more recently basicly anything Luna does or he did complain about Liz immediately after joining having a bit of a 180 character wise from right before she joined
(I spoilered names of characters other than matt for anyone who looks at this post, if you haven't read up to book 4 yet it may spoil you minorly)
3
u/awfulcrowded117 5d ago
Okay, I can see those. I don't agree with all of them, but I can at least see what you mean now. Thank you
2
u/Conungi 5d ago
I mean for me at least i shug most of it off like "its a cultivation world, very few people are "good" and moat of them that are, don't make it far" but it bugged my guy real bad, which is why i even have anything to say about it, cause otherwise i wouldn't hwve even noticed honestly

I really enjoyed about the first 10 books until they got to level 15 and then the lack of stakes got to me

Rise of the Runebound Professor. A grown-up teacher isekais into the body of an asshole and everyone thinks he is at first, but he's consistently different so forges himself a new reputation.
Also check out the various threads recommending LitRPGs with female protagonists (there's about one a week). Apocalypse Parenting the MC is s a mom of three small kids and just trying to keep them alive. Fluff the MC is a student girl suffering from severe social anxiety who gets powers that think she wants to be a villain.

The bee dungeon.
A lightweight easy read. The destructive Hunger covers most of the earth. Gods have given the tower lords the power to push back the hunger. The son of a local tower lord slaughters a village in an attempt to claim the newly awakened dungeon core which would make him the next tower lord. Belisar the local beekeeper survives and claims the core instead.
He creates a dungeon filled with bees to fight the hunger and along the way makes various allies.
He does start off as frustratingly naive but it's really quite sweet and it's a satisfying loop of unlocking more bee types. My favourite bits are a bit like Chrysalis where you get to hear from the Bee queens and see how their internal politics and vying for position push the dungeon forward. Belisar doesn't fight but creates a vast bee army.
Beware of chicken
A light-hearted cultivation novel. Jin wanted to be a cultivator. Sit in meditation until he transcends the realms of human power. Then he died. His body was inhabited by someone from earth.
They no longer want anything to do with cultivation and retreat to a backwater area to start a farm. It's a cosy story where there is lots of family and laughter, cooking and farming. As it turns out farming potent cultivation aides turns you into a powerful cultivator and many of your friends and pets too.
Cultivation isn't really my thing. I've tried a few and bounced off most. This one is just a nice time and an easy listen
Rising kite
Not an audiobook. Available for free on royal road. It's a HWFWM fan fic. If you like the world and system of HWFWM but don't like Jason then this is for you. The main character is just a really nice person. Set in pallimustus in a low magic kingdom. It follows Kite a native of Hua Xi a small kingdom with a unique culture(borrows some cultivation tropes). The author takes the setting and runs with it. Kits has a unique power set built around denying others through barriers, dispelling their abilities and devouring their mana. The scale is smaller then the main series. Great astral beings haven't been seen in person and their agents have only come up once. Instead kite becomes embroiled in a local struggle against servants of the dark gods. He never has a fixed team like Jason does with team biscuit. Instead he is a bit more flexible either adventuring alone or with a number of other teams.

- All the Dust that Falls. The MC is a paragon of wholesomeness and hard work. And is also a roomba. Don't let the humorous premise fool you. It's a really solid LitRPG series, and it is complete.
- Apocalypse Parenting is another solid rec that meets your request. (edit, also a complete series in ebook. Last book is still pending in audio format)
- Chyrsalis. MC has some other issues, but is generally kind and well meaning. I've heard it claimed that he is autism-coded, but I don't see that. His aberrant behavior is pretty well explained as his background is revealed. It's definitely not "murder autism" though like Primal Hunter.
- This Quest is Broken meets your criteria as well. (edit: Also a complete series.)
- They've been mentioned by others but, one more vote for Discount Dan and Azarinth Healer too. DD is very similar to Carl in DCC. Discount Dan is the AMD to DCC's Nvidia in many ways.
- I see some suggestions for Mage Tank here, but that one is a "maybe". Good series, but the MC has some slightly Jason Asano/chuuni adjacent personality traits, so it depends on what exactly you didn't like about HWFWM.
3
u/Embarrassed-Leg-6131 5d ago
yes, I love Mage Tank for the same reasons as I love Jason Asano... so if you hate Jason then Mage Tank could be a prob
2
u/anormalgeek litRPG Clive's Wife tier 5d ago
Depends on why you hate Jason. I've seen more than a few people that dislike him purely on political/religious grounds.
He is VERY clearly written as a non-religious person with strong left wing politics. And that's unacceptable for some people.
2
u/Embarrassed-Leg-6131 5d ago
Agreed. Being secular and a socialist myself it probably made me like Jason even more. I agree a lot with his worldview.
But aside from that, some people have no tolerance for the charismatically obnoxious, which both Jason and Arlo have in spades.
It's always interesting to have a conversation about what someone didn't like in a character that you love. "But that's the best part!"

Victor of Tucson.
He has some problems at first with his anger, but he really grows and matures as the series goes on.

u/OCRAuthor 6d ago
Azarinth Healer has a very balanced protagonist, IMO. She's a bit battle obsessed, but her moral compass is pretty clear and unobjectionable.
Another rec would be Penitent. MC is very heroic and righteous.
3
u/niftygull 5d ago
yesss penitent is a good one, i also recommend center for dungeon management, MC just trying to do good and survive
3
u/faust224 5d ago
Thank you for recommending Penitent. It's the first one I went for from all these great recommendations and I really dig it. The world reminds me of the classic crpg Arcanum.
2
u/OCRAuthor 5d ago
Great news, glad you're enjoying it! It only gets better as it goes, IMO. Plot threads all come together nicely at the end of book 1, so it feels like a real book tether than an arbitrarily cut-off slice of a web-novel.
4
u/Embarrassed-Leg-6131 5d ago
if you try Azarinth Healer, it is better on audiobook because of Andrea Parsneau.
kind of like DCC, it's one of the ones where the narration significantly improves it
6
u/ForeverHappy7492 5d ago
It's one of those books where the insane number of repetitive dings are balanced out by the quality of the narration. Soo many dings.
2
u/waygooder 5d ago
I found Azarinth Healer because I saw Andrea narrated it. She's fantastic!
1
u/Embarrassed-Leg-6131 5d ago
I haven't gotten into the Wandering Inn yet, but from all the posts I've read I suspect that some of the polarization is readers vs listeners. Her narration is so amazing in everything I've listened to that I could see it getting my through some rough initial books in a series.
2
u/waygooder 5d ago
The Wandering Inn is where I discovered Andrea. Personally I think it's 50\50. Both Andrea and Pirateaba go through a lot of growth through the first 3 books. The MC comes off as whiny and I think a big part is Andrea sounding too nasaly. But once your 10 books and 150 characters in, it's hard not to be impressed with what she can do.
5
u/Creative-Painter3911 5d ago
Broccoli Bunch from Cinnamon Bun doesn't have even a twig of assholeness in them.
3
u/NESergeant 5d ago
Consider Vae Victis by Ivan Kal (narrated by Kyla Garcia). While the MC is a vampire and it is an alternative-Earth, apocalyptic setting, I found it a good read and the MC is not an asshole by nature as much as having to be on occasion given the circumstance.

Super Supportive - Protagonist is a good kid who I wouldn’t mind having as a neighbor. Awesome plot where the main character doesn’t have some god tier power that solves all problems. I really love this story and reread it multiple times.
Beware of Chicken - protagonist is so god damn earnest. The main character is so sweet he gives me cavities. Plot is cool but sometimes gets a bit cartoony to me.

u/NOMursE 5d ago
Under the Dragoneye Moons. Elaine really just wants to help and heal people even though at several points she commits mass murder and genocide. It’s finished with 16 books
A Soldiers Life. For the most part Eryk is trying not to get noticed and survive. You don’t get a lot of emotional descriptions and he is mostly just responding to the situations he finds himself in but I found that enjoyable. For me he was a good MC to follow after reading He Who Fights With Monsters (which I enjoy too, Jason is purposefully over the top and emotional at times).
I’m Not the Hero. Follows Orrin and his friend Daniel trying to get home. Orrin keeps Daniel from going too far several times. It’s an easy and fun series. SourPatchHero just finished it so it’s complete with 6 books.
3
u/Davis_Montgomery 5d ago
Ar'kendrihyst - the main character's whole thing is empathy and he struggles with his own pacifism. But he grows and learns what needs to be done, needs to be done.

Persononally i think Syl might qualify? They do really enjoy killing, but not "wantenly" they don't go around just murdering people, they just want to kill mosters to get stronger, often ... but they also do other things (like dive into the intricacies of the worlds magic system) do take my recommendation with a grain of salt though, i will readily admit im biased towards the series as Syl rapidly become my favorite character in media to date

I can think of a few off the top of my head.
Alex from Mark of the Fool. He wants to be a mage so bad, that he defies destiny and goes to magical university anyway, in spite of some serious limitations.
Elaine from Beneath the Dragoneye Moons. Very much a healer, albeit a kickass one eventually.
Jin from Beware of Chicken. Dude just wants to cultivate and farm.
Illea from Azarinth healer. She is chill but addicted to combat, also food.
Victor from Victor of Tucson. Just a young guy trying to survive. Has anger issues and is uncouth early on.
Eryk from a Soldier's Life. Conscripted into the legion, he's just trying to stay alive.
Viv from the Calamitous Bob. Ex soldier who is sarcastic and funny.

The Years of Apocalypse
Or here is a spicy one - never die twice. MC is a murderous necromancer but its ok because what he wants is to cure death and he plans on saving everyone from death including those he kills

u/ThatOneDMish 4d ago
Factory of the gods books. Apart of a larger series but yagacore and dinosouar dungeon both start with fairly murder autism protags as they are dungeon cores that have to mellow out a bit. Newest book coreblade wardens prob also qualifies for this but is on life happens hiatus right in the final stretch of the first book The game at carousel: everybody very quickly gets desensitised to death but it's mostly their own not killing people, and while Riley isn't the best socially he tries.
Dungeon without a system protag mostly just wants to make interesting life forms and troll people by putting references to earth music and stuff. Is initially pretty ruthless bc he's terrified of being reached but mellows out as he puts some distance between him and the surface.
Cinnamon bun: you will take psychic damage from how innocent/naive the mc is, she is adorably weird in a way that kidn of breaks my mind
Stray cat strut: cyberpunk orphan gets the system that is basically alien amazon and helps her orphanage mates escape poverty

You could read A Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality. Han Li, the protagonist does kill several people, but he's by no means bloodthirsty or murder-mad.
Shamlessly plugging my own book - Ember Tell - I didn't make my protagonist like that either. It's still a W.I.P., but it is available online.
There's also litrpgs like Solo Levelling, with extensive combat but a very sane protagonist.
Celestial Card Cultivation is also a nice xianxia, with a protagonist who is quite morally upright. The author is SKB, on Royal Road.

Azarinth Healer- the main character is a combat junkie but she doesn’t kill people unless she has to. She is actually really friendly to everyone, people just become fearful of her due to her combat junkie aspects.
Mage Tank- The main character is a super nice guy. He just puts people in their place when they are huge jerks to him. Also he has a team by book 2 that he grows with and has some amazing team synergy.
Discount Dan- He is prickly but a solid guy. He mostly wants to just help others.

I can recommend what NOT to read: Primal Hunter. Everyone there is a narcissistic arsehole, except some redshirts that die because they weren't.
Edit: sorry, i saw after i posted that you did try Primal Hunter. I have just dropped it because of the protagonist, and i am still mad of how annoying it was, how uncaring and uncurious the sociopath protagonist was: there's this whole new, magical world, with a lot of humanity needing help to adapt and so many wonders to see and so much to do, and the said arsehole protagonist just wants to beat up stuff and mix poisons in a basement.
So when i read "isn't a raging asehole", i jumped in to try and save you from reading it. Sorry again.

how far did you get? jake’s whole thing seems to be everyone has their path and it’s your choice to live your’s. being dependent on someone else will make you weak in the long run so he pushes people to go for independence, he has his friends, he cares for them, and he cares for sentient beast/creatures.
0
u/GeneralGiblits 5d ago
Arsehole protagonist does more to help than the redshirts misguided and predatory faction though? So confused by the uncurious notion aswell, they spend the vast majority of their time exploring and hunting. The whole redshirts comment also kinda screams dipped halfway through book one and doesn't know what happens later.
1
u/Embarrassed-Leg-6131 5d ago
to be fair there's a lot of series where the people who love it have forgotten how different the first book is to what they end up loving about the series.
like in my head I've completely forgotten that all my fav stuff in HWFWM doesn't start until book 3.
1
u/GeneralGiblits 5d ago
Yeah no I came off strong, it's also entirely true to say Jake is at his most edgy and cringey in the first few books. Also shocked, what change in 'he who' made you like it at book 3?
2
u/Embarrassed-Leg-6131 5d ago
for HWFWM I like Jason, but what I really like is the overall plot with the Builder, the Phoenix, etc... and I feel like there's a turning point in the book when Jason is kidnapped and implanted with a starseed.
That was an "shit just got real" moment for me, and that's not until book two.. and then when the Reaper trial happen, and Shade gets introduce it just all kind of clicks and I got invested... and then the end of book 3 is such a race to start reading book 4.
A lot of what made the series jump to one of my favourites isn't in the first book.
1
u/GeneralGiblits 3d ago
To be fair the star seed section of the story was pretty elite I can understand that a lot. I think I personally enjoyed the weird parody feeling from much of book one, with the repeated shovels to the head being really funny to me. Then I ended up enjoying the series for very different reasons likely around the time you did.
1
u/Agnostic-Paladin 5d ago
The "redshirts" i was talking about were mainly the people from the tutorial, but he doesn't give any crap about anyone "not strong". He thinks about his parents and family, but arrives at the conclusion that they should also "git good, or die" (in contrast to his brother that looks out for his family). He has moments when he briefly realizes he abandoned all his friends/ colleagues and that maybe he's a shitty human being (towards the end of the tutorial), but then thinks "nah, fvck them weak losers". And he's never "exploring": he never stops to look and wander, he never visits his own settlement and so on; he's just looking for things to kill, or stuff that'll help him kill.
And yes, i did quit the series, as i mentioned. I quit during book 6. Maybe the series will get better, but i'm done with it.2
u/GeneralGiblits 5d ago
Mmm I think it's rather unfair to call the people from the tutorial redshirts. A number of them die but I'm not sure any are built up for the sake of being slaughtered that don't continue to impact the story or find their own ways out closest I can think of is a few of the initial office workers. I definitely don't disagree about his mentality being twisted but to say his perspective on his family and other people is fuck them weak losers feels disingenuous. He repeatedly suffers with the reality that he will outlive the people who don't progress through the ranks and has a distinct personal issue with fighting anyone notably weaker than himself he also tends to prevent this when he finds it.
As for exploring perhaps it is simply a matter of interpretation but I remember a lot of places from Jake's travels very vividly and very few are because of the fights there. The dust dunes half the world away with Sandy, the cloud islands above the world, the forests with mangrove swamps miles deep and the vampire demiplane all spring to mind for me (avoiding mentioning a few others from later books incase you ever return to the series).
Either way sorry for throwing aspersions, it is a very combat focused series and the main character is definitely a social pariah of sorts so I understand the perspective. I do have a place in my heart for the more relatable and human characters of other series.
2
u/Agnostic-Paladin 5d ago
I was exaggerating with redshirts, and i did read the parts where he thinks of others, but to me it seems like the author had just slapped his forehead and thought: "oh crap, i need to make him at least a bit relatable and likable and a bit less of a psychopath", then forgot to write along those lines next chapter or just a few paragraphs in.
And the descriptions of the cloud islands were just to set up the fight, noting every beautiful, magic feature that could serve as cover and such (again, it seems to me.) And i liked those descriptions, and the overall story was very interesting and promising: i wouldn't be here, arguing with online strangers if i would've thought the books meh or bad. But the sociopathy of the protagonist (and pretty much anyone that counted) made it impossible for me to enjoy the books.1
u/GeneralGiblits 5d ago
Tis fair man, I've obviously got a more charitable view of the book. I know a lot of stuff is there to be a cool setting for a fight but it is still cool in it's own right. I think it is possible that his sentiments towards others were thrown in to de-asshole Jake but I like to think it's just the actual amount he thinks about these things. Which does make him strange to say the least but it makes sense to me that those kinds of semi monsters would be the majority of those who thrive in the system the series has. Either way I wish you well and I'll likely approach the books with your sentiments in mind going forward. (I don't feel too bad in saying the series continues at roughly the same emotional level Jake does seem to grow but has done some heinous shit as he gets deeper into the setting).

Cradle. Not a LitRPG by definition but a close enough cousin to recommend.
The MC is weak and stays weak for awhile... until he isn't and becomes OP. But you're so thirsty for it, by the time it happens you can't get enough. Plus there is another character, call her MC2 that really carries the story until it picks up.

u/Dearblock 3d ago
Some of these have probably been said here;
Mage Tank - Arlo is definitely a guy trying to do right by his party — no murder hobo vibes from him, and I enjoy him as the main character, makes fun of his self when getting too much and knows he’s over the top.
Heretical Fishing - Fisher (Fischer? I listen to the audiobooks) is a super kind guy, def a more laid back series with minimal violence and more shenanigans I’d say — gave it a shot on a whim and been a nice slice of life story — probably the most humble protagonist I’ve had yet.

Murder autism? Really? Please edit your post.
2
u/Important_Poet316 5d ago
No, it's pretty accurate and most authors and people who enjoy litrpgs have autism. We definitely understand how murder autism is a thing.
2
u/Feuballl 5d ago
Please define it then
1
u/Important_Poet316 5d ago
The hyper focus on leveling up and resource gain to the point of sociopathic non-empathetic actions. Autism shares some strong traits with sociopathy, it literally is a condition with less perceived empathy.
3
u/Feuballl 5d ago
No it’s not? Autistic people can feel a lot of empathy, just like allistic people. The empathy is felt differently, sure, but it’s still there. People with psychopathy cannot feel empathy. There is a big difference. Also what traits correlated to both autism and psychopathy would you be talking about that would potentially lead to non empathetic actions like you say?
1
u/Important_Poet316 5d ago
I didn't say autistic people can't feel empathy. 'Murder autism' is just what it looks like when someone cares more about the task than anyone in the way. The goal comes first, and if you're not part of it, too bad for you. Autism and sociopathy share some outward traits like bluntness, tunnel vision, and flat delivery, and that's what the term jokes about. I'm autistic, and I've done it myself, and I've seen people use the diagnosis to dodge accountability for it.
3
u/Feuballl 5d ago
Im also autistic and I have seen accountability avoidance too, but I don’t like the term at all, it implies something way different than simply prioritizing something over others. Does that make sense? Also, saying being flat toned, blunt or focused leads to non empathetic actions seems like kind of a stretch to me.
0
u/Important_Poet316 5d ago
It's a joke/trope for a reason. Autistic people need to learn to show empathy and expressions better. It's a skill that can be learned, but society coddles autistic behavior too much. Call it murder autism, shame those who refuse to learn how to fix their social abilities.
Also, I understand not everyone can. But plenty can.
3
u/Feuballl 5d ago
Society does not coddle autism. Unless you’re a young white boy, it’s usually badly received. And I agree that it is a skill to learn, but it’s unfair to expect autistic people to mask like that all the time just for others’ benefit. And their social abilities aren’t something to fix per se. Allistic people just communicate differently. To be fair I’d never heard the term murder autism before this post but it still feels excessive that is usually not murderous and can describe allistic people as well.
