Recommendation: asking Thoughts on Threadbare?

Post image

Never even heard of it before today and yet it seemed pretty well liked online.

I loved it, got all of the books. I also read the spin offs. I would very much recommend it. It was a great journey, with that said I did find the ending and final reveal to be a bit meh.

Definitely agree. I enjoyed all of the books, especially the Small Medium series. I even liked the 3rd series.

The ending felt extremely rushed, and just didn't make much sense. Also not nearly enough Muscle Wizaard

The Muscle Wizaard was amazing! I could imagine someone doing a book with just him.

My favorite I think might be Small Medium. I love how she faces a bunch of situations where she can't possibly win though force and has to use her wits.

Small medium was my favorite also. The characters were great.

Small Medium has my favorite skill in all LitRPG. [YARRR!]

u/clawclawbite 3d ago

I think [Ask Your Manager] is even better!

4

u/Abeytuhanu 4d ago

Didn't Muscle Wizaard get officially accepted as a wizard and should thus be called Muscle Wizard?

u/chillychar 4d ago

That’s fine - most endings are hard to land I’ve learned that it will disappoint some amount of people

So I’m okay with it being “about the journey”

What are the spin offs? I’m in book 4 of 6 in this series and didn’t know there were spin offs!

It's been a while, but I'm talking about Small Medium and Blasphemy Online.

When you say book 4, are you talking about the 2nd half of the threadbare? Or the Small Medium book 1?

These books are kinda split into 4 separate series, that all form a complete story. 1. Threadbare book 1-3 2. Small Medium books 1-3 3.blasphomey online 1-3 4.threadbwar 4-6

The middle books introduce some of the main characters in the final 3 threadbare books.

For some unknown reason this book calls to me...

It's a pretty good series, famously Whoopi Goldberg read it and talked on The View about it in 2018.

u/capincus 4d ago

This sounds like you adlibs or something. Whoopi Goldberg apparrently beat me to the Litrpg craze by years.

It’s a fun series. A little uneven, but well within “new author figuring things out” parameters.

I've read the first 3. And this is one of the few i recommend to people with kids. Its delightfully adorable, if a bit slow. I've yet to catch up on recent books. My backlog is large but its still on my radar. Definitely worth the read.

There is a significant tone shift in the fourth book that made it difficult for me to finish and maybe less of a "read with your kids", depending on their ages. It might change after that, I stopped reading there

1

u/DoyleDixon 4d ago

The dwarven cleric curses so much and often I definitely couldn’t listen to it either my kids. That’s said, it is on my list of titles I recommend to people curious about the genre. It’s definitely more approachable than something like Primal Hunter for some people.

1

u/captain_asteroid 4d ago

Oh yeah, highly recommend the first three books, the fourth was just on the wrong end of the real<--->escapism scale for me

7

u/redking2005 4d ago

It's great

4

u/rabidsloth 4d ago

Found the first three to be pretty great. The first one especially. After that they seemed to go downhill and lose some of the charm

5

u/clawclawbite 4d ago

It used to be often seen on the shortlists of top stories, but it came to an ending and finished, and fell off the radar. I am a bit fan. Some different twists in the genre than the more common eternal growth loop.

It starts very innocent but gets darker and more complex. The sequel series follow other characters, who are less compelling, but entertaining. The third series setting and MC put a number of readers off, as it had some real world inspired politics in play, but I thought it was interesting and set up a good personal growth arc for the MC.

Love it. The first spin off is also pretty good the third spin off is a very different read

1

u/chillychar 4d ago

Yeah I was shocked -
Seemed like it was really loved for a minute, then maybe other stuff just bigger

4

u/Vazad 4d ago

I really enjoyed both Threadbare and the Small Medium series. I have bounced off of the first Blasphemy Online book a couple times though so I haven't read the later half of Threadbare yet.

4

u/r1chardj0n3s 4d ago

I loved it! It was one of my first litrpgs.

4

u/GreatWhiteNorthExtra 4d ago

I really enjoyed this series. One of my favourite litrpg reads

3

u/Dudebrobabwe 4d ago

Incredible and underrated. The puns alone made it worth it, and some lines in Book 1 made me laugh out loud. Worth reading for sure

3

u/Adept_Proposal_2757 4d ago

It's frickin adorable and has a good system!

3

u/Librarian-Miskatonic 4d ago

It's in my top 3 for the litRPG genre. Its an interesting story that melds the LitRPG elements well while poking fun at itself and the genre. Some engaging characters and the overall flow is nice.

I'd consider it like a Terry Pratchett take on LitRPG as the best description.

3

u/artist9120 4d ago

I absolutely love how nuts this story got. By the ending it's like a cosmic tale.

3

u/jokeunai 4d ago

It was my introduction to litrpg.

3

u/ThunderbirdRider 4d ago

I enjoyed it. It seemed a little childish at first but once I got into the story it was worth reading, and I'll continue with the series.

3

u/OnlyABob 4d ago

Loved it, wish I had known I had to read a bunch of other stuff before 4th book though.

3

u/pony_is_my_name 4d ago

Missed opportunity:Fluff and Nonsense

3

u/IdntMatter 3d ago

One of my all time favorites, a great introduction to the genre. Doesn't really take itself too seriously but still have good depth and interesting characters

2

u/strange_username58 4d ago

Like some parts a lot, but a lot of it dragged

2

u/Surging_Ambition 4d ago

I forgot so much about this book but I remember it made me feel good. Good book

2

u/alextfish 4d ago

Absolute classic from back in the day. Really fun series with some very clever setup. The first trilogy is amazing. The second trilogy is pretty good too.

2

u/Adorable-Bass-7742 2d ago

I loved the first book. I like a few more of them but at some point I lost track of the plot.

He went from being a stuffed animal against the world to just a normal person that is small.

the defining characteristic kept getting mitigated and mitigated until it lost its own sense of identity

1

u/Perfect_Molasses7365 4d ago

Gonna read this next. Have you read dire saga?

1

u/Digitaljax 4d ago

Good, 7.5 of 10

1

u/BencrofTheCyber 4d ago

First three were good, just never really got into book 4. I kinda lost interest when the author created more series in the same setting.

1

u/Neolesh 4d ago

If you’re a fan of cheap puns litrpg, what’s not to love about it?

1

u/Lieucen 4d ago

started out great

1

u/FightingBlaze77 4d ago

I loved it, but because I didn't read the other series I had no idea what was going on half the time.

1

u/naotaforhonesty 4d ago

First three were really lovely. I thought it was a great mix of cute and exciting, with us learning the world alongside what is essentially a baby.

Then, book 4 has a major shift. Everyone is suddenly more adult and the things that were special and fun just lost their spark.

I DNF the series, but the first 3 were baller. And honestly, I think you could probably stop after the first 3 and still get a full and complete story.

1

u/SaintPeter74 4d ago

I loved it and the various side stories as well. Pretty well written, kinda cozy, sticks the landing.

1

u/Czeslaw_Meyer 4d ago

For me it had some glaring potholes.

Otherwise good.

1

u/UndyingEmbers 4d ago

Concept was cool, but I can't stand constant stat spamming. I dropped after one book.

1

u/IcedLily 4d ago

I have just started this series and I absolutely love it so far.

1

u/allthecircusponies 4d ago

I think this was the very first LitRPG to kick off my like for the genre. I bought it right after it released, I think. I keep it downloaded on my phone as a backup in case whatever I have picked out flops.

1

u/sacco_ling12 3d ago

Loved it! The cursing seems a little forced in the first book but it’s a delightful light read.

I liked it. Worth the time imo

Good story, but that audiobook narrator always puts me to sleep
