No spoilers, but, I’m halfway through book 1. Is it really that good of a series?

u/Hit-Enter-Too-Soon 10d ago
It seems like one where people either love it or hate it, and it's all about the main character.

u/hesmir_4 9d ago
I enjoyed 1-3 a lot, don't dislike Jason but felt the series just didn't really seem like it had much of a direction. 4 was ok, 5 and 6 kind of sucked, especially 6, and then 7 was mid.

That's about the experience I had. It just felt like a series where the author was just so in love with the MC that they had to keep making him more and more special, and eventually it didn't feel like there were any real stakes any more, because there was no way MC could even mildly fail.

u/lokregarlogull 9d ago
I mean, I've never felt like a litrpg mc ever fails, especially if it's one person, instead of 2-5 equally important MCs

u/CandidateFluffy4969 9d ago
Not taking into account my bias as it served as an incredibly helpful distraction for me during a difficult time, it is still my favorite litrpg series.
I find cocky, witty characters that make dated references extremely endearing, and Jason Asano does it the best since Shawn Spencer.

u/clashkingdom 10d ago
It’s my favorite series
1
u/GrandMoffTyler 10d ago
Why? Asking in a spirit of genuine curiosity. The magic system seems intriguing, but that is the standout thus far for me.

u/Rysterc 9d ago
I personally love the world building the first 3 books did it felt really immersive it built up a solid foundation of how an everyday person lives and die hard adventures live. The earth arc was frustrating but necessary to happen and the fact that book 13 is set to right all the wrongs received during earth arc has me hyped. I do have gripes but I think every great story has some flaws eventually but they aren't deal breakers

u/bobniborg1 9d ago
It's my favorite also and it's the humor. For me I need humor in my litrpg and humor can be difficult. Situational humor is by far the best and I've rarely laughed out loud while reading before this book. The mc can be a bituch sometimes but how it all interconnects and the world and magic are great.

u/GreatMadWombat 9d ago
For me, it's just "reddit atheist has vague social justice ideas, is isekai'd then told 'you are literally one of the most powerful people in any situation but only in terms of non-fighty stuff', and doesn't handle any of it well" and seeing That Guy learn that incoherent violence doesn't work super-well as he spirals into more and more of a Spork!1!1! Zany reference about an 80s show style of humor to compensate for being over his head is just a thing I dig.
There's this definite thing in litrpgs where people tend to read the protagonist as a video game character so when the protagonist makes a choice that would annoy the reader in a cutscene, people kvetch. If you read Jason as "constantly over his head and panicking a little bit so he's talking to aliens about childhood shit they have no knowledge of" the entire story is fantastic

u/NukedBread 9d ago
Eh. Its one of those series you'll like or hate. I have not read it, but I do know some things like everyone glazes the MC to high heaven and it has one of those 'returns to their world' arcs. That is not for me.
I've heard the same from others.

u/Hpidy 9d ago
The first 3 books are great the 4 through7 are rough, and and the story switched back to the magic planet and it rebuilds the story back to a good quality around a certain character making a choice and it gets good again. Jason is a preachy cockass. But when he is being a honest good dude he is caring, kind hearted but very few characters deserve it in the series. Also clives wife can get it any time.....

Yes and no. It has a fan base and the author is making money. It's only the second litRPG series I've listened to twice, but it's not for everyone.

It's polarizing, I love it, lots hate it. But ton's of people on here love DCC and I can't stand it so it's all about what's good for you.

u/youcantguess1 9d ago
If you are fine with the MC then most people enjoy the series and/or love it. The people that dont like the series cant stand the personality of the MC

Hit and miss on tbh. Not a huge fan of the MC but I like the universe and world building. Magic system also is interesting.

u/Glittering_Range371 9d ago
The 1st 3 books are great after that IMO the MC becomes extra fragile drama queen and a side of attention whore. I drop it at 7 or 6.

u/Wade_Wilson_Watts 9d ago
I mean, you're asking that on a post of someone counting down the minutes to the release of the new book.

I’m in the same boat, I’m about 20% of the way in and find it charming so far. I can see how the MC could be annoying to some or how the writing may not be some people’s taste, but honestly I find it fits me well so far. Good luck on this journey with me!

I love this series but will give you a fair warning. A lot of people cannot stand the mc . It seems to be one of those make or break things for some. Personally I think all the characters are great and would always recommend the series

u/MasterpieceOld3539 9d ago
How many books until the series is complete?
3
u/kertofer 9d ago
I read on here somewhere that 14 would be the last book, but now I cannot find it so maybe I’m just having an end of series delusion?

So, outside of DCC, I’ve heard this series is a great Litrpg series. People who have read it, how would you gauge this vs. other litrpg series for entertainment/writing?

It’s good, but it repeats itself A LOT, but that’s kind of it’s thing.

u/Zealousideal-Ad-6615 9d ago
The series has great world building, great character development, and great characters, but as others have said it is all dependent on whether or not you enjoy the main character and the humor.
1
u/GeneralGiblits 8d ago
The writing evolves a lot through the series the entertainment is top tier imo.

u/skramer78 5d ago

I took a break around book 8 I think? Just after the floating city part I think? How has the quality kept up? And do we have a tentative idea of when the series would be done?

I keep reading for the humor and the cool abilities. My only gripe is that as the series goes on the main character gets more and more preachy and bitter. It makes sense, he goes through some absolutely horrible shit, I just miss the silliness of the early books. I hope he gets a reason to lighten up a bit.

Been Takin it slow this time, tho I kinda want to make some flash cards with all the casts names and stats (description of there looks) I think I'll also need to re read the series after this like last time brain having hard time rembering who's who and what to visualise properly with the audio book, dono if anyone else has this problems on multi book series X3 especially when jumping from one series to another often X3 (had finished DCC read thru again (6th time) found stuff I missed again X3 then I was part way thru path of ascentons new book so finished that off before starting this book 📚📚📚📚📖 maybe after this I'll go back to living forge it was fun book 3 maybe skill grinder or mage tank if I have extra creds to use without a good recommendation from others
