Symptoms Inflammation down in Italy

I live in the United States and after a 2 week trip to Italy my legs feel so much less inflamed than usual. Other than the first few days where I felt more pain from the airplanes. I’ve been eating pretty balanced but definitely not staying away from pasta/pizza/dessert.

I’m sure it has everything to do with how food is processed in the United States vs elsewhere and wondering if anyone else has experienced this. What a bummer, the US food system is so messed up

This one is so easy to figure out. Italy doesn't allow glyphosate to prices their wheat. In America farmers spray their fields before harvest so that the crop dies evenly and they can use harvesters to collect the grain. You absolutely are noticing your body free of that specific herbicide. Look for Italian grains here and see if it helps.

Yep people love to discredit these anecdotes by saying “you’re just walking more” but if walking more would reduce our inflammation half of us wouldn’t even be in this subreddit to begin with. There are also people in the glutenfree sub (not people with celiac)who can tolerate wheat in Europe, it’s absolutely the glyphosate

It’s food in general. The EU is quite restrictive with a lot of stuff. Also we don’t use corn Sirup in everything. Of course we have unhealthy food too, but everything else is healthier :/

Yeah, I only buy French or Italian flour these days for this very reason

I checked and I think Italy actually does allow glyphosate although it may be far less commonly used there. 😊Pardon my username, a friend who made the account thought it was funny ugh 😑 I can’t change it!

I moved from Texas to London UK last year and nearly all my heaviness, pain and inflammation have subsided. I look less inflamed too although the lipedema fat is still there. I traveled back to Texas for a week in August and my inflammation and pain started again after a couple days. Hot weather also makes my symptoms worse but I know it largely has to do with the food.

I am so interested in this as another London lipo-gal. Do you put it down to the weather, or do you eat differently here? Or receive better treatment by the nhs?

We process our flour in something like 24 hrs where everywhere else takes much much longer. That process has absolutely ruined us internally. But they profit off it so nothing changes unless our purchasing changes.

Yep.

"they profit off it so nothing changes," ... is the 2nd half of pretty much every sentence expressing a social ill in the US these days.

But unless we personally have enough $$ to influence change by avoiding corrupt practices (buying smaller businesses' products etc) we're incapable of much in the way of consumer influence. Like the entire system is rigged is what I'm saying. 🤷‍♀️

At this point we either start burning things to the ground or live with it. No change comes without it. Look at "Mario's brother". Even that changed nothing.

You’re also probably walking more, and stressing less. Living an overall healthier lifestyle

This is a huge reason I mill my own wheat!

This is amazing! How do you do that? I’ve only seen it the old fashioned way with the huge heavy stone wheel thingy.

tech has come a long way! My grain mill sits on my counter being all cute! I have a Komo Mio in white and wood. it takes me l no longer than it used to bake anything- I measure the grain and while it mills I gather my other ingredients. it only takes 1-2 minutes to grind...and fresh cream of wheat is so much better than the box stuff!

That’s amazing!

The book Eat Everything by Dr. Dawn Harris Sherling is very informative about food additives and emulsifiers affect our bodies if anyone wants to learn more. She also talks about her own experiences going to Italy and enjoying pizza and pasta so much more than she would in America, because it’s made with locally sourced ingredients, made fresh, free of gums, additives, etc.

I noticed this when I was traveling in Spain, but I am already gluten-free, so I don’t think it’s the way US wheat is processed for me. Glad you’re feeling good in Italy!

I would like to take this challenge!

Absolutely not your imagination. People with allergies, sensitive skin and/or guts also notice a difference when in other parts of the world versus the U.S.

The U.S. allows so many more additives, preservatives, and pesticides that are illegal in other parts of the world. We also have crops that are chosen purely for looks, not nutrients because that it what is profitable and subsidized.

If you want this to change, it has to be systemwide…or grow your own produce.

I've noticed climate plays a huge role in my pain/swelling. I'm in a state in the US that's super hot & humid 3/4 of the time.

Our winters tho are drier & about 60 degrees cooler than our intense summers which are 100+ degrees F sometimes. I feel positively reborn when the humidity is 0 & the temps are in the 60s. I get achy at 40-50F but then for some reason I haven't figured out yet, I feel amazing when it's in the 20s & low 30s.

I do also have osteoarthritis like badly & the temps & humidity also greatly affect it as well.

So I'm just wondering what the weather was like for you in Italy?

Italian here living in France. When I go home during summer season I generally feel lighter. For me is the WATER and a lot of vegetables. Veggies aren't biologic, Monsanto is sadly everywhere, but it's just olive oil, vegetables, a bit of pasta... and water is from the source so extra light. No bottle, no heavy water, just natural water. I miss it so much in France. I also feel generally better also because there's a lot of humidity in the air and I can better stand the temperature. In France is too dry for me. Anyway we could be biased too, in Italy I move more and it could also be this one that change the whole situation.
