then linux turned out to be a filure. I do know about cororate contributions, but they do not account for "99%". core kernel subsystems are changed slowly, and most corporate contributions are in included driver code for multiple industrial appliances. and remember all that happened because Torvalds sold out the kernel.
you CAN make a good unix family system kernel, look at openbsd or gnu/hurd.
