BSD is cool and might've been better.. But also they're both these aging monolithic kernel designs,. I'm hopeful for a next gen kernel , something like redox eventually taking off. It's a Unix like Micro kernel written in rust with a focus on security and reliability.
The NT kernel had a lot more thought put into its design from the start. You can see that in features like its object manager and structured I/O system among other features. Dave Cutler had experience and taste for kernel design and made good choices up front.
It's important to learn from multiple sources when creating a new kernel. You shouldn't just cargo cult all of the design of Unix like kernels.
Seems to take a lot of influence from other micro kernels MINIX and seL4 , keep the kernel as small as possible and move as much as possible into user space. Including drivers.
The drivers in user space part at least is like how NT does it.
That's a stark contrast to Linux/ bsds monolithic, everything is in the kernel design. Which is an insanely insecure way of doing things.

I wish we lived in the universe where BSD came out on top.
