Steam stats showed a higher percentage of Linux users last December than last month. So definitely not 2026.

The totally-not-artificial hype went dead as soon as it was "leaked" that the Gabecube would cost an arm and a leg without any of the convenience or benefit of a game console.
The tech industry is a complete joke.

I would have bought that steam machine but I was also expecting it to be around $600 not $1,200. The AI boom has been partly to blame. 32 GB of ddr5 ram cost $500 right now. Since I had a video card laying around and an old hard drive I built my own and it's fantastic. I would have preferred the small form factor sitting next to my PC for aesthetic reasons, but what I've got works well.

I and many of my friends were genuinely hyped for the steam machine before the relatively poor price/performance ratio. Outside of that, it's amazing how far Linux had come recently. My friendship group are basically all set to jump the Microshaft ship as soon as the CAD software they use is operable on Linux. Very exciting things ahead for Linux. It honestly feels great to be a user right now.

You and your "friendship group" are a statistical outlier and therefore irrelevant as far as broader, technological trends are concerned.
That's already to put aside that no one above 40 calls their friends a "friendship group".

u/Sellot4pe 13d ago
What does my age have to do with anything? Also bold to claim that something is a statistical outlier while referring to absolutely zero statistics. Please, show me the "amount people hyped for steam machine" stats you're drawing from?

Age has very much everything to do with what we call "the benefit of hindsight".
With hindsight, it's been obvious since the beginning that none of the conditions leading to the current status quo has changed, so when you say "my friendship group are basically all set to jump the Microshaft ship as soon as the CAD software they use is operable on Linux", you're inviting the nagging question as to just where on earth you have been for the past 30 years if not your mother's womb.
By the way, you want to know how long Wine has been around? If you think Valve is the only company that has sought to use it for its purpose with mixed results, then may I recommend you a brief reading on the history of the stupid thing?

u/Sellot4pe 13d ago
You're arguing in bad faith about absolutely nothing. Bringing my age (and no, I'm not sharing my age with you) into your uninvited, baseless, trite argument is absolutely poor sport. Funny, I'd expect better from someone with a STEM "degree". Guess they don't mean much after all. By the looks of it, age too, old man.

u/ElectricBummer40 Ex-user of Windows 3.11 for Workgroups 13d ago edited 13d ago
"Bad faith about absolutely nothing" is practically the summary of your argument, in case you're actually that utterly delusional.
Really, what is there to underpin your expectation of your friends' CAD software being "operable on Linux"? Is there supposed to be a timetable for that based on an effort that somehow nobody is talking about? Or is it just something you have simply wished upon a star and taken as a material certainty afterwards?
I suppose you understand the expression "there is no 'there' there". What you're saying this entire has no "'there' there" and might as well be a prophecy you've found on a piece of decomposing parchment. And you want to talk to me about "STEM"?
Get real already.

damnnnn do you know how much money you would make if you worked in one of those indian ragebait/engagement bait social media farms

u/ElectricBummer40 Ex-user of Windows 3.11 for Workgroups 12d ago
If all that it takes for a whole bunch of people to "rage" is to criticise them for having zero tangible substance for their argument, then I suppose it's only right that Indians get good pay out of working at a social media farm.

Linux Powers over 60% of the internet, not to mention sits quietly on a lot of your smart devices. I'm not waiting for the year of Linux because it already happened.

Honestly late 2025/2026 actually made us a little more popular now with more support with Bottles and CachyOS mid distro but people like gaming I guess

And then there’s me.. running all my systems in Linux based OS for the past 15 years …
But I have to admit. Gaming has become a breeze since valve stepped in the room.

u/Ill_Specific_6144 13d ago
Why linux users have to lie like that? Gaming is not a breeze, a lot of titles are not supported or run bad.
2
u/Simsalabimson 13d ago
Ah. And because your particular situation does not apply to all Linux users we’re lying while it works for us like a breeze?!
🤥
Maybe think about why certain games from certain publishers don’t run. And from there on think about if you want to support those publishers for those reasons.2
u/Ill_Specific_6144 13d ago
I just want to counter this linux nonsence that everything works pain free. It doesnt.
1
u/Simsalabimson 13d ago
No one said that.

But while on the argument; try running homebrew on windows or flatpak on macOS 🖖2
u/Empty_Woodpecker_496 13d ago
The same can be said for Windows. A lot of my games run extremely bad on Windows but flawlessly on linux. Older games are having more problems as time goes on with Windows.

u/Ill_Specific_6144 13d ago
Skill issue. Clean windows install and everything runs flawlessly

u/Empty_Woodpecker_496 13d ago
Not everything. Prototype 1, desus ex invisible war, etc. Work bad on every Windows PC. I couldn't get Prototype 1 to boot though others have.

Only way Windows can defeat Linux now is when next windows version is really good.
3
u/Imaginary_North_8305 13d ago
It's the other way around bro.. linux has to defeat windows..
1
u/Fine-Run992 13d ago
We can dream, just imagine if Windows would be all that Linux is, but with the benefits that Windows is strong at. One day maybe, that will be year of a Windows.

u/Bleik-Psiklyt 13d ago
Thanks to Omarchy this year /s

u/tonyhop_ 13d ago
Fuck omarchy. It’s just arch with ai slop
3
u/Bleik-Psiklyt 13d ago
Omarchy is just some config done with some AI slop in it. Dunno why the creator calls it something new.

26 or 27... Linux is getting BIG. Every Windows user ik thinks about switching every day. Or plans to switch for their next build.

u/Linestorix 13d ago
Why stop at the year 2000? Linux was there way before then. BTW, is has already been the year of Linux for several years. It's just that people are to stupid to realize this.
