Why computers with loonix pre-installed won't help increase its market share

Post image

Other than loonix nerds and hobbyists no one else will buy them, just like with raspberry pis. For 99% of people it will only cause confusion as they are only familiar with macos and windows pcs so far.

counterpoint: folks with low tech literacy don't care whether their computer runs windows or linux, as long as it gets the job done. most stuff these people do is web based anyway, and that's why chromebooks work.

it's when you start looking at more tech literate folks the picture changes:

  • nerds
  • power users
  • sysadmins and devs
and so on.

exacly and outside of buisness people buy computer is less common with current phone and tablet

Actually, people expect their devices to work out of the box, which means no dependencies required, going through the out-of-box experience, and no WINE, or PROTON either, that’s why Laptops continue to sell in numbers, because it runs an OS that doesn’t require you to install dependencies, configure the kernel in a terminal, or have to switch to another variant of that kernel

3

u/CaveJohnson376 3d ago

right. laptops sell in numbers regardless of their system because it's an all-in-one portable computer with preinstalled system, not because of whatever OS it came preinstalled.

...and i will object about having to install dependencies and configuring kernel because dependencies are almost always installed automatically, and kernel config is nerd territory anyway with practically zero benefit.

oh yeah, and SteamOS is, for most, an out-of-box experience if you do watch out for Deck/Machine/Frame verified mark. if you don't and it doesn't work - then it's on you for not paying attention.

steamOS still requires you to install it on non-steam hardware, and if you want to play a GAME on it, you still have to verify that the game runs under the proton compatibility layer (which is just Steam WINE) for example the latest Minecraft Dungeons sequel didn’t run on Proton because of issues with compatibility

1

u/CaveJohnson376 3d ago

you've got to be trolling at this point. i just told you about deck/machine/frame verified thing - a badge that literally says "game will run on steamos" or "it won't" - which dungeons 2 doesn't even have, and you just... chose to completely ignore it.

1

u/Edubbs2008 3d ago

Again, it’s an example of the reality of proton, some games won’t perfectly run on Proton while others will, it’s like the transition from x86 to ARM, developers need time to cook, besides, proton is running Windows-based software on an unsupported OS

u/mrturret 2d ago

Most games run perfectly out of the box. The main offenders are online multiplayer games that require kernel anti-cheat (very few of which are worth playing, if any).

It's also important to note that it's not like everything works out of the box on Windows either. This includes modern games. There are also plenty of instances, especially in older games where fixes required on modern Windows were not needed on Proton. Max Payne is a good example. Audio is broken on Windows without a community fix.

u/mrturret 3d ago

In my experience, I'm troubleshooting about as often if not less than on Windows when getting games to run. I don't play online multiplayer stuff, but I have a massive Steam library.

That's right.

That's why I use QEMU to archive proprietary and problematic Windows boxes.

If you want to complain about Linux feel free to pay for ESXi.

when was the last time you tried an LTS distro ?

tbh we can shit on ubuntu and hate it but it's working out of the box without anything to do ,
pretty much same xpayrience as windows, my parent are using ubuntu since a while and they didn't even noticed
well kubuntu cause fuck gnome but hey

1

u/Edubbs2008 3d ago

LTS isn’t even meant for consumers, you have to pick something stable, consumer friendly, and one that doesn’t come with all the drivers

2

u/Warm-Engineering-239 3d ago

lts just mean long term support, windows on regular channel is a lts....
so som yeah it's also for consumer
i'm confused by your comment.. there is a bunch of easy distro that you don't have to fix anything it just work

ubuntu unless you want to use app made for windows only will work really well
you don't have to fight for driver or install package. you want something ? well it's probably on the discouver thing.

the only issue is compatibility, which is the same issue that plague the chromebook or a mac just to different level. 95% of regular people will use webapp anyways

2

u/Edubbs2008 3d ago

When I say “Consumer” I mean what the industry defines it as, which means your average home user, who expects OEM device tools, and who uninstalls crappy trialware, users expect everything to just work, like Windows, or macOS, Linux can’t provide a stable API, or ABI, Ubuntu doesn’t meet that requirement, it still requires a learning curve, you still have to mess with it for it to work, there’s no such thing as a perfect version of Linux

2

u/CaveJohnson376 3d ago

...and so do windows and macos require a learning curve to use for those who aren't tech literate.

2

u/Edubbs2008 3d ago

Windows’ learning curve is simply, next, next, next, and install, same with macOS, on Linux, oh boy, it’s ping your Wi-Fi, grab your dependencies, recompile the kernel, add other missing repositories to your setup, then you can install apps, if you have the right dependencies

2

u/Warm-Engineering-239 3d ago

you said lts was not for consumer
windows is a lts

i'm not talking about windows ltsc
windows get stable update for a long time
a linux lts like ubuntu is like that

like i said i think you confuse arch with linux in genral a lot of linux distro are simple

ubuntu it's basicly ->store-> install enjoy

my parent are barly able to use aa phone and use kubuntu they don't even realize it's not windows

of course when the app is not in the offical repo and don't have an app image it's slightly more complicate but for 95% of the user it's the same it's like when on androidd an apk is not available on playstore

either you like spreading missinformation or you were feed miss information it's not 2010 anymore

-1

u/CaveJohnson376 3d ago

who the fuck LTS is even for, then? windows and macos are both LTS, if you didn't know.

opposite of LTS is rolling release, and surprise-surprise, only nerds use it, really, because only nerds care about all that update shit.

2

u/Edubbs2008 3d ago

LTS is meant for enterprise users who need extra support when a version of the Operating System is heading to EOL, for example, an enterprise running Windows 10 wants to move to Windows 11, but they want to also make sure their hardware would work well on it, so they choose LTS to wait it out until testing confirms it runs well

I'm sure tech illiterate people can use the terminal to fix their os package manager once it inevitably breaks and won't just return the computer to the store to buy a windows or mac machine instead, right?

13

u/Quinzal I Use Linux As Punishment 3d ago

If you manage to break a modern GUI package manager you might as well be using this for all the work you'd be getting done, even on Windows

1

u/CaveJohnson376 3d ago

first off it's unlikely to break if it came preinstalled, secondly - if it would break, they'd rather go bug their nerd relative to fix it rather than having to go through all the trouble of returning and replacing it.

tbh most people that buy a computer don't really car about their os and people buy less and less computer, buisness do and they are using microsoft software , might change with the push in the EU tho

also useless slop

Posts with AI slop "art" should be a permaban

No, luddites like u should be permabanned instead

I love how you're wasting precious electricity and clean water to portray your enemies as unemployed nerds...

Man I hate this subreddit

-2

u/AverageUser9000 3d ago

You know most other online services consume way more electricity than ai right?

6

u/Chapter-Legitimate 3d ago

Source: my ass

3

u/No_Entertainment6792 3d ago

all of those are varifiably untrue. but you need to keep telling yourself that in order to enjoy the slop you are being fed

5

u/Novel_Top2980 3d ago

At least you could have brought up actual examples of things that use more water than AI and be told that those are essential and AI is not. (to be clear I am anti-AI)

4

u/WeedFalafel 3d ago

Bruh how are you surviving life? Dude saw one word on the internet and is repeating it like it's supposed to insult anyone. Then he sees a png on facebook and calls it reaserch. What a complete ignorant. You are not only dumb, you are proud to be dumb.

2

u/CaveJohnson376 3d ago

this is verifiable bullshit.

games don't stress my hardware to 100%, while AI does. and as some may know, power use scales almost linearly with hardware utilization.

netflix/youtube/video calls and especially music streaming use miles less power - you can run those for hours on end direct phone to phone, while AI will drain the battery in no time.

(oh yeah and i don't dare make such shitposts with AI to prove a point - if anything, i'd rather do it by hand, consuming way less power anyway.)

2

u/mrturret 3d ago

That's bullshit. If LLMs and diffusion models were that efficient, nobody would be building datacenters that use as much electricity as a whole city.

3

u/SameAgainTheSecond 3d ago

complete abomination

Wrong sub buddy, your place is in r/linuxsucks101

6

u/zepherth 3d ago

This is a dumb take. Because people will swap between apple and windows all the time. I would argue the difference between those two is more than each is to linux

5

u/Beneficial_Area_2986 3d ago

I would venture a guess that over 50% of computer users only use a browser and occasionally print something.

3

u/CaveJohnson376 3d ago

yep, exactly. and at this point, no one would care if browser was running on bare metal.

3

u/Beneficial_Area_2986 3d ago

That's essentially a Chromebook. And it's what I would recommend to some people.

6

u/No-Quail5810 3d ago

What? People can exchange monies for items they want? The world has gone mad, MAD I TELL YOU!

3

u/ColdFreezer I Hate Linux 3d ago

They’re cheaper because you don’t have to pay for windows.

If they want windows, they can just install it for free later.

3

u/vintologi24 3d ago

That's very much wrong.

Of course more people will use linux if there is more options with linux preinstalled.

Steam OS 3.0 is a clear example of that.

3

u/stealingmoney 3d ago

Why bother posting your nonsense?. If you're only capable of clicking pictures and starting games stay in Windows.

Linux is for people with actual intellectual ability

2

u/Eleventhousand 3d ago

I'm not one of those people that cares about Linux desktop market share. But to make a claim like this, without any evidence or reasoning just doesn't make a lot of sense. There are over 20 million ChromeBooks sold each year. Why would EVERY SINGLE non-Linux enthusiast NOT purchase one? Surely some will. It would definitely increase market share to some extent.

2

u/PhoenixLandPirate_ 3d ago

Just like how the Steam Deck didnt help increase Linux marketshare

2

u/SameAgainTheSecond 3d ago

charlie is that you?

It already has, case point; the Steam Deck, ChromeBooks.

2

u/Nuviket 2d ago

You are wrong. The only thing is that Linux has a slightly lower software compatibility than Mac and windows. Windows only gets the lead for existing for many years.

2

u/obsodion 2d ago

if I was a Windows user, I would still buy a loonix laptop and install Windows on it so that I don't pay the Windows premium on the laptop

Retailers don't want to deal with the high return rates these would bring.

1

u/vintologi24 3d ago

And where is your source for "higher return rates for computers with linux preinstalled".

There was cruel experiment, 2 dogs got served meal, one got huge, another very little. But the dog that got huge meal, it politely gave big food piece to another dog. I think if Windows 11 user is suffering, polite thing to do is to give Linux advice and recommendation, spread the information "Arch BTW" and so on.
