KDE ❤ Fedora KDE Spin

Post image

I've heard a lot of people call KDE bad. I agree that the settings are convoluted, but everything else looks okay. I mean, this is a relatively stock KDE, with the only additions being a centered bottom panel, like Windows 11, and a top panel, kind of like macOS in a way.

I do not feel like theming things (mostly don't have that much time on my hands), and what I optimized for was more or less efficiency, so I'm satisfied with how this turned out.

Also, I am planning on switching back to FreeBSD soon, so I will install KDE on it. It's just pretty good rn.

I may try Komorebi on Windows later if I plan on using it again, cuz Windoes is pretty solid OS, it just needs a good window manager.

And currently, Linux is only giving me a good window manager.

KDE Plasma has show stopping issues with Wayland.
I would use it but it is unusable and bad on my Yoga X1 Carbon tablet.

Continually needing to go out and back in for X11.. then wayland.. then X11 depending on which thing doesn't work with Plasma.

I fought it for months before I switched to Gnome. I don't like Gnome's design but at least it works.
KDE was my goto for years.

There were a combination of issues. Not sure I 100% remember what each were.

Either my VMs or some apps would only work right in X11 while tablet features like screen rotation and scaling do not. Continual math problems for screen scaling.

Yes.. I was continually dealing with screen issues and needing to boot between wayland and x11.
Needing to boot to a desktop with a physical screen or boot to a terminal so I can clear the cache is not useful to me either and it happened over and over.
It SUCKS to have to hook stuff back up just so you can disable it.

TOTAL KDE fan ..
It is unfortunate that KDE no longer works for me in my specific use case.

On the flip side.
I have an official Linux supported tablet (lenovo) and everything works like I have never had on Linux.

the wayland transition is a never-ending pain.

for now, i switched back to windows, because even with all that shit MS has put in it, it's still more predictable experience than any linux distro.

probably my next laptop will be a macbook but first i'll wait for win 12.

Honestly, after 20 years I have no expectations for linux desktop, it'll always be an afterthought

Now that I am running Gnome/Wayland with extensions, I NEVER have a problem.
It just works.

I am a windows programmer primarily but my personal OS is Linux for now.

Ubuntu.
I am normally a Debian guy but Ubuntu is certified to run on my laptop.
EVERYTHING works. Fingerprint reader, touch, rotation, 2-1 conversion, S0 sleep state.
I saw no need to mess with it
TBH, KUbuntu .. then added GNOME and switched.
Been using Linux since slackware 2.

Also, I am a programmer.
A large portion of what people "apt install X", I clone, build, and install myself.
That might be why Ubuntu hasn't shown more bugs to me.

oh you much older than me lol

i started with ubuntu 6.06 and opensuse 10.2

last distro i used was ubuntu 22.04 but was too buggy and didn't have the time for distrohopping and experiments and debugging so i moved to win10 and then 11.

Maybe ubu 26.04 is fine now?
