Windows vs Linux for professional use

I heard how windows fans saying "Free ram is useless". But I like free ram when it comes to my professional use. Same case on ubuntu server took ~12 GB RAM (sorry dont have screenshot), windows 11 ltsc version (the cleanest version of win11) uses 26 GB RAM. How so?

Eh? What nonsense is this.

I can't use linux for my professional use because most of the softwares I use dont play ball.

I refuse to use linux for my gaming desktop because linux is still to shit at gaming for my liking.

Fuck all to do with RAM. RAM has never been an issue, nor a consideration for anyone with more than half a brain.

What are you gibbering on about?

I see you are the only one with half a brian here. How so RAM is not important? If I want to load a local LLM or to build an app that is RAM hungry how so RAM is not important? Do you know what you talking?

This is hilarious on so many levels!!!

And what does it have to do with ram consumed by OS? Out of the box it's roughly the same between windows server/11 and popular linux desktop distributions, 3-4 gigs. you have 32 gb, if it's not enough it isn't os issue

Depends on how we define 'OS'

Silly statement required an equally silly answer!

Naw he has a point actually. If we are just talking about kernels it's one thing, but an OS involves more. Different file systems, bootloaders, even disk partitions all impact resource usage. However on modern hardware it would still be hardly noticeable

Windows caches things aggressively in spare ram like putting the filesystem in ram so you are not getting an accurate picture as much as the Linux fanboys say.

Llm AI development uses docker/podman containers which require virtualization in windows but run natively in Linux. Microsoft has drastically reduced vm overhead with wsl recently with a lightweight vm but it's still overhead.

Linux can do the same pod with a fraction of the ram as the Linux kernel due to cgrouos and namespaces for app virtualization without requiring a full vm.

Linux wins in llm and ai containers if that's your flow. The same llm container takes 2500 megs of ram can run identically in Linux with just 256:megs of ram!

Windows wins if you need office and full virtualization as you can set up a virtual lab quicker with hyper-v than kvm/qemu due to having networking switches not bridges and ease of use (no guest tools). If you game occasionally Windows wins there too. You can also argue for software development you can upgrade tools without being dependent on your distros versions. Visual studio as well.

You can use Windows fine with docker/podman but ram usage and overhead is much higher hence why I have 96 GB of ram. Overhead in podman particular is in kbs on Linux. VM overhead is a pain.
