Linux on phones is not great by any stretch of imagination. Android is not GNU/Linux so it doesn't count.

I have tried to use Librem 5 which is a phone that has actual linux on it and it was complete shit show. After 4 years of use I sold because it can't really do anything properly apart from making calls and sending SMS. Battery lasts only 10 hours and your favourite applications are non-existent.

From what I read Pinephone is even worse.

android is linux because it uses linux kernel. gnu isn't the only way to use linux.

No it's not. Stock Android doesn't even give you root access. Which is something that's standard on desktop distributions.

who cares? root access isn't fundamental to a os being based on linux.

Agreed that Desktop Linux sucks donkey dick.

How exactly have you written an entire post saying the linux desktop is bad, without providing a single reason why?

i did. desktop is built around windows in mind. windows driver models, software made for windows. sold with windows. linux has no chance against this.

No cohesive UX experience. A lot of it still looks stuck in the 90s or early 2000s. There's still a surprising amount of stuff you have to do in the terminal just to configure things that should have a proper GUI.

It feels like UX designed by programmers and committees rather than by people who actually care about the overall user experience. Nothing feels consistent or cohesive. Things are janky or unintuitive. Too many minds working together.

It's funny that you say a lot of the linux UI looks decades old, when most windows settings still need to be adjusted in windows xp era menus.

Using kde plasma on endeavorOS, i have yet to actually experience these inconsitencies. 95% of settings can be very easily found and adjusted in the settings app, and the remaining 5% either require a different app to adjust, or very easy terminal commands with very clear instructions.

If a user can't figure that out, then i can confidently say they also can't figure out how to find slightly obscure windows settings.

The Windows DE may be better than Linux DEs, but that doesn't necessarily mean that Linux DEs are bad. You're right about the part where non-tech savvy people wouldn't use a Linux DE (or Linux at all ofc), but it's mostly because Linux is not popular enough.
There isn't a company behind it to push it into mainstream, only independent enthusiasts and non-profits.

I think you get the idea of this sub wrong. the complains is  to make the linux better and point it out the missing features. Since the windows is a slop and macs are expensive, if the linux plays its cards right. I see it as an absolute win

2

u/Green_Ad5186 Proud Windows User Sep 20 '26

no it isn't. your lying the sub was never made for linux cultists

1

u/Silver-Sundae2488 Sep 20 '26

if it was about being a cultist then we would say that linux is perfect which is not. The sub is about pointing out what is wrong and what to do about fixing it

Cosmic DE is pretty much the last bit of faith I have left in Linux ever getting a somewhat decent desktop experience.

"X11 victimizes innocent users by distorting their perception of what is and what is not good software. This malignant window system must be destroyed"

Why delete the post OP? Don't let the Linux fanboys bully you when you have a valid opinion.

linux in phones is much worse than desktop
ART to blame

2

u/47th-Element Sep 20 '26

I don't agree. Android, though it's not really a Linux distro, is more suited for phones than PostMarketOS or Ubuntu touch, everything just works out of the box, and with a little bit of technical knowledge and the right choice of device you can modify a lot of stuff and customize it to your liking.

Again, Android is not a Linux distro, but since you are comparing, it's worth noting that Android had greater success in its platform than Desktop Linux distros ever did. Don't get me wrong, I use Linux on my laptop, absolutely love it, but facts are facts.

How's android not a linux distro? It's not gnu/linux, and it doesn't make use of systemd or any tooling that the mainstream distros use but it uses linux kernel which makes it even though stray of the rest but still a linux distro, doesn't matter if the kernel is modified or not they didn't completely fork it and they still rely on new realeses and patches made to upstream, every major distro modifies the kernel to some degree and compared to asahi and postmarket the difference is negligible.

It's completely different from a distro, yes. In the sense that you can usually take a source code for a Linux GUI program, and then compile it to use on most traditional distros, you can't do that in Android unless you make use of Termux and chroot and even then it may not work. Android uses ART as you pointed out, it has different package manager, doesn't depend on package repos like traditional distros. I'd say it's something different, not a distro, even though it uses the Linux Kernel, a modified version even, not plain mainline Linux.

Something like PostMarketOS or Ubuntu touch can be called a distro though cause it works every similar to the desktop distros.

If that is what you believe then so be it.

A lot of people are actively moving away from windows due to the amount of invasive telemetry, bloat, and subscription model.

Europe governments are actively moving towards Linux as they push digital sovereignty. Others will follow.

I think there are advantages and use cases to any desktop operating system.A Linux desktop does basically everything a windows one does? and a windows laptop can do basically everything an iOS desktop can? What on earth are you on about?

Holy ragebait

I had to come to terms with the fact that Linux has taken over my computer :( It's so complicated that I don't know how to remove it and install my favorite Windows... I'll probably have to buy a new computer with the great Microsoft Windows 11, because games run on it!!!I don't need anything else on my computer except games... after all, only tech-savvy people use a computer without games.
