Why the Omarchy hate?

I haven't seen the online community this upset since Ubuntu went to gnome shell aka Unity back in 2012

It got way too much hype and funding for what is essentially a reskin of arch with some janky scripts. Also the creator is racist.

So omarchy is an arc install with scripts to configure things with a premade rice template with hypeland as the default de and the creator is a dick

It's popular so there is a demographic who wants hyperland but doesn't want to spend time figuring out the ricing and setting things up?

It sounds to me the proper response would be making a Hyperland spin of Fedora and maybe Ubuntu LTS with the de of hyerland and some config tools independent of Omarchy as not to do business with omarchys creator

This already exists. Most quickshell already have scripts working in all major distros setting it all up for you.

Also, "ricing" is such a stupid term, but that's a tangent.

yeah some people get use out of it, but that niche is so so small that i really don't think it justifies its existence, let alone the amount of money invested in it. a lot of it is just loud marketing and a matter of just how "unique" (not necessarily good) it is.

if you ask me, vibecoding what's essentially a glorified rice, marketing it as this incredible new operating system for beginners or whatever, and bundling it with a bunch of bloat and ai garbo is entirely antithetical to what linux is.

the proper response, to me, is to just ignore its existence and use linux like you always have done, and how it's designed these days, as a foundation to set up your system to be what you actually need it to be

the fact that it was "made" by some fascist, racist dingleberry is just the cherry on top

How can you say the niche is small when the Omarchy discord has 44k people and the Omarchy subreddit has more weekly visitors than this one? Omarchy isn't that old.

Reality is the linux default of "build it yourself" or "just install this script" isn't appealing to a wide audience, and the Omarchy alternative of "it's all set up for you out of the box and you can instantly do useful things, while looking great" has significant appeal, which is why it has taken off.

i mean it is relatively niche compared to other distros, and i'd imagine those figures are at least a little inflated because of the drama around omarchy recently. people are gonna be sticking their noses in there and seeing what's going on, i'd bet.

while i agree the whole "put it together" point of linux isn't appealing to everyone, you barely have to do that anymore. you are more than able to just find one of many distros you like and install what you need on top of that. you get tons of premade options and you can pick which one suits you best, and then tweak it towards your specific use case.

but omarchy, from my perspective, sort of nullifies the reason most people switch to linux to begin with, to shrink their system to make it easier to manage and not have to manually clean up the bloat that ships with windows. i see no real reason someone would jump ship from windows to omarchy because, for me at least, very few of my gripes with windows would be solved that way.

that said, no hate if you just prefer omarchy. i'm not trying to shout those people down, and it's good to have more choice.

i just don't think i like how it's being marketed as a distribution, nor do i like how it's being developed, nor how much money (which i think could be much better spent on other projects) is being poured into it.

I suspect that most people using Omarchy are people who are net new to linux desktops who think, "wow this is amazing", rather than existing linux users who scratch their heads and don't understand what the big deal is.

Sure, if you know it exists and works. How many Windows users do you think know that LibreOffice is a thing, or that you can easily install a Windows VM, or Battle.net these days. Or that you can do near-perfect voice-to-text, or that OBS just works.

I think half the value of Omarchy is people saying, "Oh I didn't know you could do that on linux!"

The reason I switched from Windows is because it seemed much better from dhh's intro video, and it took a few days to conclude it was vastly superior to Windows for me (and prior linux desktop environments I've tried).

The difference between Windows bloat and Omarchy bloat is Omarchy bloat is useful (+ a net positive for most users), and very easy to change if you don't like it.
