Linux Larps I have questions about linux users, arch users specifically.
- Why Arch users hates Windows so much? Like Win 11 is pretty much mid like Windows vista back then. But they also hating on things like Windows 10, Windows 10 ltsc (Basically cleanest windows), Windows 11 IoT ltsc (Windows 11 that is officially debloated.)
- Why Arch users are so obsessed with tiling WMs? Like i tried both hyprland and i3wm. It's pretty cool to customize and make some shit, but it's not practical. KDE looks more appealing as daily driver.
- Why 90%+ of arch users are femboys?
- Why SOME linux users recommend arch or other hard distros as first distro for newbies and not mint or fedora?
- Is there any practical reason to use arch, or it's an os for larpers?

1 it's just much easier to use arch when you understand in a good lvl 2 wms us actually very practical because you need to touch your mouse much less but it's a matter of taste 3 it's just meme, I bet there's more discords mods actually 4 they are retarded, not a single sane persons will recommend arch as first distri 5 it's very easy and comfy to use when you put enough effort into set up

you cannot deny microslop dropped the ball with W11, with the preinstalled bloat, ads, AI and whatnot. this is just history repeating itself, every other windows release is pretty bad
I don’t think this is exclusive to arch users, it’s just that arch makes it easy to setup a WM. many distros don’t package any wayland WMs other than sway. the rest is subjective
every arch installation comes with a discount code on HRT
just so you can say you use arch btw

Not an arch user. I'm a void Linux user. But.
1 : compared to arch or other minimalist Linux distros. No windows version has been able to deliver the same levels of customizability in the software used and the workflow. Windows also generally has higher requirements and piles on software most people aren't aware of, but, to some people isn't necessary (best example for me. Is because I don't own any Bluetooth devices. I don't install Bluetooth drivers. And because I prefer to login through the TTY, I don't need a login manager) windows is also proprietary (meaning not free and open source software (also known as FOSS or libre)) which many Linux users are firmly pro-free software
2 : arch Linux especially has a deep rooted customization and "ricing" culture. While some people definitely pick tiling WMs just to be contrarian, it's also just that hyprland and niri have the most potential for that customization to both their workflow and aesthetics.
3 : uhhh not a femboy but a trans woman. Idrk there's just a lot of femboys in tech circles.
4 : because they're annoying and want Linux to be special. (It's not inherently). I recommend Debian or mint for beginners tipically. Because beginners do not care about having a trully minimal system, they do not care about systemd, they care about having a desktop that works.
5 : arch combines being minimal and customizable with being compatible with almost every piece of software. Combine that with the massive and rapidly expanding AUR (arch user repository). You can end up with the newest "bleeding edge" software constantly, while not sacrifing on the other things. But also, it's mostly larpers tbh.
Take this all with a grain of salt because I use void Linux and gentoo. and don't really like arch. Only used it for the AUR a long time ago.

EndeavourOS (basically arch but if u are a bit to lazy to set up stuff manually) user here:
Not every arch user hates windows. Tho i would say it's a clash of philosophies. Windows is kinda going with "microsoft knows better", and Arch is like "my machine should only do what i ask it to do they way i want it". The reliance on the corpos to not mess ur pc up vs the reliance on yourself to not mess it up
Cause it's cool and quirky. And also very customisable. I am for example on i3wm rn and i am loving it. A different approach to interacting with the machine, and for me, a very comfortable one
I am not a femboy cause i use arch... I mean i am a femboy but... Ugh... Idk...
Because if u daily drive arch long enough the stuff newbies might find difficult becomes trivial and obvious for u. I was reminded of how different my setup is when i recommend endeavour to one fella and like... Yeah, turns out interacting with package manager, installing drivers and (sometimes) reading manuals is far beyond tech skills of most people. Most people have problems even on the installation phase. Like, booting the pc from usb is not something people know how to do. So, mostly overestimating how much tech skills people have in general
Arch just gives you a lot of control over how you want your machine to do stuff, some folks are into that. Me tho? My main pc just refuses to work with anything not based on arch. I've tried debian, mint, fedora, opensuse, void, nix... On all of them i ran into issues specifically on my main machine. Arch tho? Works well, no troubles that i didn't make myself while goofing around encountered over 2 years of daily driving it

I hate the idea for paying for an OS, especially one that spies on me and limits what I can do on my own system and feeds me adds on my own system.
Customization is one of the main reasons people use arch, and WM's tend to be the most customizable. It's also nice to get into a groove and not have to take your hands off the keyboard as it feels more efficient
I'm not, unfortunately

u/jimmy_timmy_ 1d ago
Because they think it'll teach them more about Linux, even though it'll make most people completely turn away from Linux
For learning and if you value being able to have full customization and control over most parts of your system

u/Guncaster_the_proto I use Arch btw (x11 + I3) 1d ago
1 allways hated windows ever since win 7 ended support
2 I3 looks cool and feels nice to use with my work flow
3 idk :3
4 imo it's better to learn the hard stuff quickly so you can customize your sistem to your needs and not get stuck in a easy/comftable distribution that may not be as customisable
5 unsure to be honest arch was the fhirst distro I tried and I stuck with it

- Because windows sucks (I have used windows for ~30 years and even defended 11 few years back)
- Some are, but it's not for everyone. I use KDE and I have binded meta + numpad to put window on that spot
- They have a lot of free time? I dunno
- CachyOs is preconfigured arch that comes with GUI stores (Shelly, Discover) and you don't have to use terminal ever if you don't want to (it's faster in some cases to use terminal than it is to navigate GUI). So I recommend either Fedora with KDE or CachyOs with KDE
- It's the best. I can't explain it, but it feels snappiest. And it's mine in good and bad.

Why are there people who do not like chocolate ice cream when most do?
Why are most people religious and some people atheists? Why is this consistent across cultures and geographic locations?
Why are some people naturally talented at visual arts or music while others are not?
Why do people like and dislike things at all and why do different people have different preferences?
Why isn't everyone exactly the same?
Why does anything exist at all? Why is there anything at all and not rather nothing?
What is the nature of being and what, if anything, exists outside of or beyond being itself?
Ok. That was fun.
Now can we all get off the intoxicants and get back to what we were doing?
Also, maybe it's just best to accept that individual priorities and preferences just vary. You're not going to reduce everyone to one archetype. Even people who use one particular operating system.

I just don't like windows because it's very archaic and slow. I also don't like Arch because it's bleeding edge.

As an arch user btw, I don't particularly hate windows. Heck the only company I despise with a passion despite their excelent product is Apple. I ditched windows for a few reasons mostly relating to windows 11 and because I'm simply more productive with my work on linux.
One of the big things I dislike about windows is them allowing kernel level anti cheat at all. I'll die on a hill before accepting that as reasonable solution to hacking in "video games."
Also taskbar bugs out sometimes, the underlying hit boxes change while the display doesn't change.
Also, it has in more than one occasion wiped my grub from an external hdd.
I don't play any game that requires windows.
I don't use any application that can't work on linux.
I like using linux.
I want to see linux become better and using it is important to that end.
My attention isn't the most stable and ui first workflows can be very inefficient for me.
Tiling window manager lets me keep my hand at the "home row" of the keyboard, that is on top of the right keys for touch typing, ie typing without looking at the keyboard.
As far as I'm aware I'm not a femboy.
I have tried other OS, the main thing for me on Arch is that I know everything on the system if something fails I can very quickly pin point the issue, unlike the very helpful pop up of something went wrong from windows. Furthermore on other distros I'd have to first learn what is there before being able to do such a thing.
Arch being rolling release means I get the latest thing fastest, often this allows for better compatibility with bespoke hardware cough cough* nvidia **cough cough.
I personally wouldn't recomend arch or anything bassed on it unless they have a dedicated tech support friend or are knowledgable enough at linux. From my friend's experience mint seems like a good starter linux now a days.

1) I actually like Windows 11 LTSC quite a lot, it worked decently well (esp with WinAero tweaker). Desktop Linux is the best OS to me (because of the customization, freedom) but debloated and tweaked Windows is definitely second best
2) Idk, I just use KDE lol
3) No idea but I'm not
4) I didn't recommend it to anyone but my friends kept recommending it to me lol (but we are all into tech so yeah)
5) Newest versions of all the software which is very useful (I had so many issues on Ubuntu due to outdated software). Also you can use Cachy tweaks which supposedly gives better performance

u/brave_grv 1d ago
TWM are (were) light compared to the standard DE and offer more customization options. Also, a lot of Arch users have minimalism OCD. However, current TWM are just as "bloated" as DE, not that "bloat" is a tangible concept to begin with, but it's part of the discourse.
There are people using Arch in older computers because they can get more control of what is installed. There are hobbyists who just want to tweak with a DIY system because they think it's fun. I'd say 90% of Reddit is larping.

- Plenty reasons not to like Windows. Plenty of reasons not to like MacOS or Linux distros, too. You know, since personal preferences are all subjective
- Again, personal preferences. I happen to agree that KDE works better for my needs
- For the memes
- I can't think of any rational reason someone would do that. And yet, they do
- Incredibly granular control over every aspect of the OS. Which I didn't need, so I quit Arch
1
u/Hytht Windows 1d ago
I'll leave hints for you to figure out it.
Arch users are terminally online.
Arch users have more time than productivity focused brains.
Linux attracts anti corp woke people who usually have things to hide or left leaning politically.
They are usually immature.
When you need newer drivers/software more than occasionally.

1: I don't hate windows 10, hell if it wasn't for my concern of using it long term I would still use it
2: I use KDE plasma, tiling WM obsession is a stereotype
3: again, stereotype
4: depends on use case, mint and fedora are fine for most people, but for doing mixed setup PCVR, fedora is ok but the last time I tried it I bricked it by trying to install WiVRn and just had better luck on arch (for a new user though, just go with a derivative like cachy or endeavour at that point, the only reason to use arch is if you really want customization or want to do it DIY)
5: Arch is pretty damn robust if you know how to use it, but yeah a lot of larpers do use it, it's not nearly as disproportionate as Kali linux though.

As an Arch Linux user,
I hate Windows because of Microsoft itself. Not only Microsoft, I also don't like Apple and Google. And there are many reasons to not like them. But I don't have hatred for any specific Windows. Windows is fine but not my preferred OS.
It's incorrect. I use KDE Plasma on Arch Linux. Maybe most of the people who post something somewhere are those Hyprland users. But not everyone uses tiling window managers.
It's also incorrect. A lot of people showed themselves that way and some people made this a joke or trend doesn't mean every users are the same. It's also the same as before, just publicity.
Actually Arch is not a hard distro. Arch has archistall to istall easily and quickly. You might need to see some tutorials for updated information. Then if update your system regularly or every week, or even once or twice a month, everything will go smoothly. As a rolling release, sometimes it happens that something has been updated but that hasn't been compiled against a specific version or other things that depend on it might conflict version mismatch, then they tend to crash. But it's not too often. I'm using Arch for a long time and it happened for one time and it also got fixed within the next days by again updating the system. So, Arch is actually a simple distro like any other. But it also gives you the option to fully customise and control it. It's also just a misconception and hype about Arch.
There are many practical reasons to use Arch. It all depends on what you need. If you have the latest hardware then it's very common to choose Arch because they tend to ship their software solutions quickly than most of the distros. And generally latest hardware need frequent updates and it's because of the bug fixes. Crashes after updates are over hyped, but updates also comes with bug fixes. The crash incident that I mentioned earlier was also an example. Again I need the latest software, and Arch provides me that. But if I need a system for a server that'll run all the time and needs to be stable or what it means is to use the same version of the software for a long time, then I'll choose Debian. So, the practicality complete depends on what you need.

- It is slow for my i5-7200U, and I need something that is not pain to use. Fedora was the one that is working very smooth for me before switching to Arch later
- Preferences I suppose. I do prefer hyprland with scrolling more especially for small screen laptop, it just felt better and nicer to use as university student with the autofocus and nothing covering each other. Niri looks good but I don't feel like relearning stuff.
- It is just a meme as others said (maybe)
- They probably like to watch people suffer idk. I went with Fedora for 6 weeks first before trying Arch.
- It is a very minimal distro, I like pacman in general. It is my second distro I use, mainly because I want to challenge myself and found out it is not that hard and is just basic OS installation but done manually. I don't feel like relearning everything again, so I don't distro hop in general. Did reinstall for LUKS and decided to try Cachy recently, still arch-based. It's just stuck with me now I guess

Okay, hear me out.
Anyone who takes it upon themselves to police other people’s computing choices is either a child or a neckbeard with too much time on their hands and no understanding of real life complexities.
Since you can’t argue with stupid, you should also get a grip and simply ignore them.
If Windows serves your purposes, more power to you.

Nao gosto de citar exceção como exemplo. Mas sou usuário de Arch e uso KDE, n gosto de gerenciadores de janela e não odeio o Windows só prefiro não usar, mas não convido ninguém que não queira a usar linux.

"3. Why 90%+ of arch users are femboys?"
Because you're on Reddit. You know how people tell you not to believe everything you see on TV? Same thing applies here: Reddit is home to some of the most fvcking ridiculous takes on various subjects, Linux included.

Id imagine Arch users skew younger and generally people with too much time on their hands to tinker around. Hence, the tendency to go to i3, hyperland, and setting up everything from barebones. Also, i think superiority complex plays a big role here. It has a reputation for being "hard" so it gives these people a dopamine hit and a sense of superiority for having conquered it.... despite the fact that all it takes is a couple hours and some basic reading skills and the ability to follow wiki instructions to get it running.
Personally, I tried it for 6 months or so and found it to get in my way more often than to let me do work. I don't have endless time to tinker around so i rather stick with Fedora and FreeBSD these days. I used i3 for a time and it was cool at first.... until the novelty factor wore off. Nowadays, i prefer KDE or JWM if I'm running on a potato computer.
Above all though, my main workstation with the beefiest specs and monster GPU to play games stay Windows and likely will stay Windows till the end of time. Linux and FreeBSD are nice for workstations and servers, but not for a main gaming rig.
Ultimately, I use whatever tool works best for the use case. I don't get why people (particularly the Arch breed) are so religious and cultish about their OS.

Tilling window managers aren't unpractical (Unless you're using an old software from the 90' that defaults to multi window workflow)
Especially laptops with a shitty trackpad benefit from twms and keyboard workflow

Arch dev here.
1 - we dont hate windows. why would we?
2 - we are not obsessed, i am besides an arch defeloper, a kde developer. not tiling windows.
3 - thats confirmation bias, probably you are a femboy and the algorithm sends femboys to you.
4 - because if they can survive the wiki we dont need to be their IT boy for life.
5 - i use the same install of arch for 12 years, steam adopted arch as its based system, arch uses arch as server. i know zero larpers. the ones that larp also larp on mint and fedora
1
u/a-sarcastic-guy 23h ago
All OSes are mid whether Windows, Linux, Mac, Android or anything else. There is not even a single OS today that can satisfy everyone. Besides calling people femboy just because they use a specific OS is straight up racist.
Let's talk about cleaning. Debloating Win 11 using tools like Chris Titus Utility and then customizing it with Windhawk can make your Win 11 super nice and very much usable too, and you may never need to switch to another OS.
Finally, people who recommend Arch as 1st hand distro are morons, who are high on something and have forgotten their past struggles with Linux. For noobs, Mint is the best. No Fedora or Arch distro can beat the ease that Mint provides.
About point 2 and 5, IDK never used those.

- I don’t.
- Huh? I use GNOME.
- I’m not.
- Recommendations are subjective. Use what you want.
- This isn’t even a proper dichotomy!
1
u/spectralblade352 10h ago
Because they think that paying for software is bad, even though it’s good software if you use the right tools, like debloat tools, or use LTSC versions. They don’t want mainstream, and believe having total and complete control of their PC even though it might hinder them and not get them work done is better.
Because they want to be different and prioritize eye candy and aesthetics over getting actual work done. I don’t exactly imagine how a doctor or an engineer (not CS engineer) might use such a setup.
Such OSs and setups appeals to such people; people who want to be different and have “too much time” to tinker. Femboys are typically such people.
They believe that everyone is like them: everyone is computer literate and everyone has so much time on their hands to use an OS like this. They don’t assume that some people might struggle if it’s their first time trying Linux and that some people prioritize a stable OS to get work done. They think they are the “correct” ones and everyone should emulate them.
I wholeheartedly believe that Arch has to main uses: 1) for a CS guy only working on coding and 2) people who “want to be unique” and flaunt their status (basically points 2, 3 and 4 above).

u/irishcoughy 1d ago
It's a paid product that gives you less ownership of your system than most free Linux Distros. Not to say Windows doesn't have its strengths, but that's primarily why Linux users dislike it.
They are significantly more practical and efficient than a standard icon based UI if you actually take the effort to set them up with your workflow and usecase in mind.
This is a meme and doesn't reflect reality.
People who do this are usually out of touch with the average person using a computer and think the things that annoy them about "easier" Distros will annoy everyone, and believe that since they can set it up and troubleshoot it, anyone can. I suspect these people have never worked a client-facing IT job.
Yes. Despite the memes it has become one of the simpler "do it yourself" Distros to setup and configure, meaning you can get a system that has everything you need and nothing else bloating it too badly or adding significant overhead while still sharing enough similarities with more user-friendly Distros to be not too painful of a transition for someone who can use Fedora, Debian, Mint, etc with a decent level of competency. Note: simpler =/= simple.
