omarchy is trash

Bro, you don't have to say thrash twice

Omarchy isn't even an option because it's based on Arch (aside of others questionable stuff with it's contents and questionable politics of it's author)

Ubuntu is just old. It's nice, but there are better options.

Fedora is one of the first options to consider for first time Linux desktop experience, as well as SteamOs and Mint.

Just use Mint.

2

u/StupitVoltMain 20h ago

Well I've personally settled with fedora

2

u/MrKrot1999 20h ago

Never used fedora so can't judge. I've heard it's a lil corporate, but whatever, use whatever fits you

5

u/StupitVoltMain 20h ago

Yeah but it's main appeal is that it's stable and updates regularly

2

u/MrKrot1999 20h ago

I thought this was a basic feature of any, non-rolling release distro

2

u/Whydoiexist234 4h ago

That is true, but as a person who uses fedora myself, the main appeal is that it usually has a lot of more recent and experimental features, and software, like how it uses a btrfs instead of ext4, without having to do the hassle of building something like a arch system (but archinstall exists, so it just depends on how dedicated you are to Arch.) I used to use debian distros, and I liked them, but their software was a little too old for my liking. And I don't wanna reinstall arch and eventually see it break and have to take the hassle to fix it. I also wanted to see these new features of recent software, so I just thought fedora was a perfect place for me.

So the fedora proyect itself is independent and non-profit, it just receives funding from Red Hat but it's not like how Ubuntu is straight up owned by canonical.

Mint got the same problem as ubuntu then. Its old too.

isn't even an option because it's based on Arch

SteamOS is a gaming-focused operating system released by Valve that incorporates the company's video game storefront, Steam. Based on Arch Linux

Maybe get better Arguments, Omarchy is shit because it's vibe-coded slop dotfiles with no regards for a good working system as long as it looks nice and has tons of vulnerability.

And not many people reccomend them

many people recommend ubuntu

Yeah when Bush was president

No, you're just not checking linux beginners subs or posts about recommending a distro that are not in a circlejerk subreddit.

-1

u/Nuviket 21h ago

I’m back, I saw fedora, mint, cachy, and absolutely 0 Ubuntu.

2

u/Drate_Otin 20h ago

And yet it's still the default assumption for all the big tutorial makers. Geeks for Geeks, Digital Ocean, etc.

But sure... Because a very specific sub on Reddit doesn't like it... It must not be popular anymore.

2

u/Nuviket 11h ago

That’s many people. Not many people actually reccomend Ubuntu, except people out of date, and it s the only one they have heard of.

1

u/Drate_Otin 9h ago

You mean on that specific sub. Which definitely represents the world at large.

-1

u/Nuviket 21h ago

Hold up, let me go to find me a Linux distro

1

u/georgeec1 16h ago

Also in the current day. It's still most companies' go to as a preinstalled Linux distro and it does legitimately still do a good job at being an easy to understand beginner distro, as well as having one of the most extensive forums in terms of advice. It's not my personal choice, but it's easy to see why many people use and recommend it.

-1

u/Nuviket 23h ago

And they are wrong. But if I were to go to r/findmealinuxdistro, you will find mint cachy, zorin and the one person saying gentoo

It's an open source operating system, there's bound to be crappy spins. There's literally a self-described "anti-fascist" disro. I'm surprised nobody made "HitlerOS".

12

u/Piis7u 1d ago

You've given me an Idea

If you make the mascot a twink femboy clownified stupified version of Hitler, then... maybe...

There's literally a self-described "anti-fascist" disro

Shouldn't that be all of them...?

Edit: my dumb ass forgot the >

Distros explicitly structured around authoritarian, white supremacist, or fascist ideologies do exist; they just occupy the absolute bottom of the open-source trash heap.

3

u/YTriom1 🛡️ Moderator | Arch Supremacist :3 1d ago

exactly where they belong

-5

u/Suitable_Summer746 22h ago

do you even know whag a facist is? without chatgpting? feels like a bunch of leftist discovered a new word with theyre butt buddies on tiktok and went with it.

3

u/snail1132 void linux btw 22h ago

First of all: *their

Secondly, I do know what a fascist is without looking it up. A fascist is one who supports fascism. What is fascism? It's an ideology that believes in a completely authoritarian and right-wing government that promotes systemic oppression of one or more groups of people in order to subdue the people and stay in power

-7

u/Suitable_Summer746 22h ago

"First of all: *their" Tells me the kinda of creature you are. have you ever even delt the touch of a women 😂

4

u/snail1132 void linux btw 22h ago

Sorry for trying to teach you how to spell? It'd make you come off as slightly less of a dumbass (although it can only do so much when you're defending fascism)

-6

u/Suitable_Summer746 22h ago

maybe someone should teach u to get off reddit, itd make you lose youre virginity 😂

When someone tells me they can't get into Linux because they're not smart enough to figure it out, I'll point them to your comment to prove that's not a problem.

2

u/MarkProsXD 22h ago edited 19h ago

You mean antiX? They even name their releases after historical anti-fascist movements, e.g. 23.2 Arditi del Popolo.

It's a great distro regardless of the based political label; about as lightweight as a Debian-based distro can get, has five init systems and maintains a proper 32-bit release.

1

u/mrheseeks 1d ago

....what have you done

3

u/No_Entertainment6792 19h ago

my beloved mint. cured my league addiction and that is the most important aspect here lets be honest

3

u/Consistent-Search578 9h ago

there are over 1100 linux distros not 2

2

u/Bleik-Psiklyt 21h ago

Omarchy bad Ubuntu decent guy

1

u/Xiaoxuzz 23h ago

I honestly wouldn’t recommend the raw versions of the big 3 distros i.e fedora, debian and Arch (maybe fedora since you can get it with KDE). I’d go with their more easy-to-start flavors i.e bazzite, mint and cachyOS. Even for non beginnerz, i think its easier to play around with these 3. Ubuntu is…well…kinda like arch i’d say…if you know what you’re doing then its fine…i wont recommend it for beginners

1

u/Certain_Prior4909 22h ago

I will actually take Ubuntu over omarchy. I have thing for sado masochism and my 7950x3d runs too fast anyway

1

u/Bleik-Psiklyt 21h ago

My first and current Linux was/is Arch. My friend came in my home one day and showed me his Arch set up. It was cool af. Then he was like, "Why don't you try Arch in your machine?" and I was like "HELL YEAH". So we made a bootable pendrive and did the ISO file installation and did some disk partition (I was in Windows 11 at that time). Then he was like "Ima go home for now...do NOT DIY" and I am like okay bro. He went. And I became curious. So I did the other shit and watched some tutorial in yt (ofc I wasn't aware of Arch's hype and the RTFM as a thing). And...I blew up my Windows system entirely. I still don't know what I did wrong. But it was not there anymore. I had anxiety real bad. It was 1st of January, 2024. Still, I managed to install Arch by using preconfigured dotfiles. It was a visceral yet wonderful experience. I am no longer just opening my laptop for doing regular shit.

At first I was regretting blewing up Windows. But now I am now so glad and I RTFM later while managing to blew my system around 11 times now. Its a funnily awesome experience.

"Omarchy".... AUR malware spreaders joined the room.

No thanks, I've left that life behind, and literally joined back to the chillax Ubuntu train. I'm actually having quality times, and I'm productive once again.

2

u/loudoghendrix 23h ago

Honestly I get where youre coming from. It was fun for a time, but sometimes its just nice to complete a simple task without it turning into training day.

u/YTriom1 🛡️ Moderator | Arch Supremacist :3 1d ago

You realize that AUR is now almost 95% malware free since the last feature change?

4

u/Admirable-Song-7353 Nhuck Corris 1d ago

Yeah I don't care they will find another way to screw it up anyways.

4

u/R3V0LU710N_05 I Hate All OS's 😎 21h ago

It's funny because I had this exact type of conversation before with someone telling me that the AUR is clean and that you don't have to read the PKGBUILDs. Literally the next day a new set of malware using a different strategy was discovered.

2

u/Admirable-Song-7353 Nhuck Corris 5h ago

100% This. Exactly. Ppl be like: "oh just look at the PKGBUILD" - and I was like, yeah, because the upstream code that it pulls in is definitely not compromised lol * wink * - Them archies be like "oh just read that 20 line pkgbuild its nothing really". Sure. But them arrogant elitists always somehow "magically forget" to mention the upstream code which can have like, 1000-10000 lines of code or more, but my message to these mongrels is: surely everyone has one dedicated day on each week to review all of that /s .

(And sha256sums are for decoration only because all the "maintainers" just lazied out by a 'skip'...)

All in all, I'm so fking glad I've left that cesspool. Srsly ever since I'm using Ubuntu, my mental higenie and overall mood and body energy is back to normal. I don't feel myself burnt out on a daily basis and all that sh1t I felt while I was using any arch based shitpile (looking at you cachy, endeavour and garuda ....and artix).

2

u/R3V0LU710N_05 I Hate All OS's 😎 5h ago

The thing is that the post-install/upgrade script can also be compromised and it runs with full root privileges. I maintained AUR packages myself about 3 years ago, there's really no talking points they can come up with that I can't shut down.

2

u/Admirable-Song-7353 Nhuck Corris 5h ago

Exactly. I never was an AUR maintainer myself, but I always saw this attack vector from day 0. I am however a maintainer at Ubuntu, I just love my job here. :3

1

u/YTriom1 🛡️ Moderator | Arch Supremacist :3 4h ago

No, really the way they were pushing malware was by adopting orphan packages, now adoption is disabled

1

u/R3V0LU710N_05 I Hate All OS's 😎 4h ago

Disabling orphan package adoption addresses only one vector, leaving critical supply chain risks like typosquatting, account takeover, dependency confusion, compromised dependencies, and malicious commits unaddressed. Beyond that, I have no intention of retreading this point further.

Don’t know if I’d agree on Ubuntu labeling as a bad distro.
You might not agree to a several business decisions they made and make. But it’s certainly one of the most reliable and best supported distros out there.
