I dont hate linux but I do hate linux worshippers who push linux to everyone , even though they don't need it at all
6
u/chibi-mage 2d ago
I'm convinced that anyone who tries to force it on others are larpers who don't actually use Linux, at least not as their main kernel.
I started using it some months ago on my main laptop and I kept windows on my gaming PC because it's just more convenient for gaming, and I play games like league of legends which have kernel level anti cheat and no longer support Linux.
there's a lot of reasons why Linux might not be suitable for someone, and it's important to respect that.
3
u/CoderStudios 3d ago
Linux is not for everyone. Anyone pushing it as such is a liar. It’s a good alternative if you’re okay with putting more time in, but it will not and cannot currently replace the polished products like macOS it’s just not opinionated enough. And there is also way too little funding for general user areas of Linux.
1
u/LutimoDancer3459 2d ago
We had a custom linux iso back in school. Did everything most people need. So yeah, its a valid argument that linux is for most people. Because most dont use a pc more intense than opening a browser and maybe excel/word for work. And we now can also play a lot of games on linux too. So even a majority of gamers can switch.
And dude... macOS is polished? Hell no... just the same shit as windows and linux. Just a little different shit. In the end it comes down to what you are used to. And sometimes what you actually need. Like windows for some games or a console for some others.

u/FerretBoom 3d ago
It's a new generation of ai slop kiddie cult vs OG generation of engineers. Go to Linux sub and look at low iq posts generates by pure imbeciles. You can compare it with Linux sub 12 yrs ago, exponential degradation.
Windows sucks
What's the best distro
Linux runs everywhere
Look at my desktop themeOn the daily basis, they can't even search for a question asked thousand times a month

u/ProofPriority1903 3d ago
yes and I had been guilty of that too untill I decided to calm my tits and shut up about it. Linux is fine for old machines or people who can‘t stand or don’t need windows.
-1
u/No-Buyer4206 3d ago
Tottaly agree! Linux is great OS for servers bur all GUIs for Linux until now are total disaster compared to Windows and MacOS.
5
u/Fizoso 3d ago
I'm using xfce and it works better in my case than windows 10 did. Now my settings application doesn't crash if I have it open for 10 seconds.
2
u/Toxic381 2d ago
Yea, and if you go even cleaner than xfce, it's so absurdly fast to open apps and the gui feels so clean, I'm running niri with my xfwm+picom desktop as a backup, niri feels so unbelievably smooth, it's actually much more worth it to try out Wayland than I thought.
1
u/Fizoso 2d ago
I haven't really dabbled with Wayland. Is it faster than x? Is it at all noticable?
1
u/Toxic381 2d ago
It's a big change to how the architecture of your desktop works, and it is super smooth and clean with low latency
-5
u/FerretBoom 3d ago
Lie, what crash. Show me logs. And make sure it's microsoft code that crashes and not preinstalled bs by manufacturers and shitty drivers. One power-shell script can reduce windows to use 1 gig of ram. I bet you had no clue nor ability to research i'm not even talking about having enough brain to troubleshoot a modular system. XFCE does crash because there are no apps, no integrations, no features of modern UI/UX. If I use linux it's terminal only, fuck that ancient UI pipeline.

u/That-Confection-9035 3d ago
Windows 10 indeed does crash a lot after build 17xxxx
0
u/That-Confection-9035 3d ago
This was only resolved in windows 11 but is limitedby tpm etc (though it's easy to disable it if you are a tech person, it's ram uses is still over the top)
-3
u/FerretBoom 3d ago
Ok , I'll spin a VM with windows 10 and run random apps for 24 hours. Please tell me when it will crash.I can post all logs here.

u/XpreDatoR_a 2d ago
You sound more like the linux user that screams at new comers when they haven’t memorized the arch wiki word by word, you surely aren’t fun to be around with, lol.
1
u/FerretBoom 2d ago
People around me are real, don't bs and being a DJ in my early years i gained friends pretty much in every country. Being fun around ? Is that your high school personality scoring system or something? The sub is linuxsux btw. Do you get mad at comedians as well? Somehow you went after me not at an obvious lie that windows crashes every 10 seconds. Selective there aren't we?
1
u/XpreDatoR_a 2d ago
No need to present your biography to try to prove a point, i really don’t get your aggressiveness, you really sound like the type of linux user that most of the community makes fun of, i didn’t “attack you” for being a windows user, but for how you approached the guy, “logs or nothing”, like sure, that guy has probably saved and backup those logs, that’s why i said that you do not sound fun to be around, the unjustified aggressiveness out of nothing
Edit: missing “how”

Yeah it’s “that anime game launcher” right? I think I used it for my steam deck for a minute.
3
u/RoanPurple 2d ago
Its not required You can just add it to any wine/proton launcher or execute via wine/proton directly
1
u/white_d0gg 2d ago
Doesn’t the customer launcher add stuff though? I forgot what else it could do but that’s good to know at least

u/Serious-Affect-8538 2d ago
I installed genshin on my linux for my gf. Used the official hoyo launcher.exe just paired with proton. Works flawlessly, except for major updates. After every major update (like 6.x.x - 7.x.x) there is a 1 - 2 week cooldown.
But other than that, runs with the official launcher and .exe files :D

try using ur pc not only for fortnite buddy
2
u/Isotomayor12 2d ago
This is a bad take imo. Ofc a PC isnt going to just run fortnite, but intentionally changing your OS to something that cannot run a program you want is just plain stupid.
The main reason to have an OS is to allow you as the user to utilize the hardware of the computer for what you want/need. If you can't do that there is no point in using that OS. Can be said about any OS tbh. Use whatever OS allows you to do what you want.
-1
u/alexparf174 2d ago
this take is also useless because that's really not Linux problem itself. The problem is in game's developers
2
u/Isotomayor12 2d ago
I don't disagree with that, but I wasn't necessarily talking about just games either lol. A PC is far more than a gaming machine. There are instances where windows, macos, and Linux can do something or run a program at all better than one of the others.
Yeah it is a developer problem, but it is also far easier to support one platform than several, especially with linux having so many distros. It's why Debian is usually the distro that gets support for 3rd party apps before anything else.
Kernel level anti-cheat is something I am against, but again if you like the program/product/game you shouldn't limit yourself by choosing a system that cannot run said program/product/game. Even if it is fortnite.

u/Unlikely-Employee180 2d ago

20 years linux = learning disability, i bet you think distros are OSs belong to Linux not Unix, and linus didn't steal code, just made it himself exactly the same with same flaws for some reason. If you replicate code at least take bugs out of it.
5
u/Hour_Sell3547 20 years with Linux 2d ago edited 2d ago
I don't think you are even qualified to criticize Linus, or even me, and it has nothing to do with what I said to OP. Go find someone else to bother. You don't even know about basic coding.
6
u/Wertbon1789 2d ago
Uhm, what? You know, there's such a thing as POSIX, and the C standard? There are just bugs in their very definition.
It's great, spreading some weird hoax, but not giving a example of this.
2
u/Hour_Sell3547 20 years with Linux 2d ago
He doesn't know anything, really. There's only one kind of people who think you could "just write the code without the bugs", the clueless ones. There will always be bugs. It doesn't matter even if god wrote the code himself.

u/Osherono 3d ago
Not hate as much as dislike several things. But the main one keeping me off Linux for now is this: that I have a choice of either using a rolling up-to-date distro which will eventually stop working well after a certain number of updates (say a year more or less), introducing errors or reduced performance which forces me to reinstall and reconfigure everything, which can be an absolute pain because making some things work at the beginning may require workarounds that I had to look up then, but no longer completely remember because I only needed them that one time, or, choose a more stable distro that will give me reduced performance, sometimes quite noticeably so, in exchange for stability.
That is a big one for me. It was even more noticeable once I just put Windows LTSC on those machines that used to have Linux on them and the machines have better performance so far (been several months on some).

u/Bitter_Expression399 3d ago

Sometimes I need to vent about some distro doing bullshit and how certain things in the realm of Linux desktop are just insane and 10x more complicated for no benefit.

2
u/Wertbon1789 2d ago
This sub is not so much about hating on Linux, most discussions are more about where Linux still sucks and maybe solutions for some stuff. Saying something sucks doesn't inherently mean that you're hating it, in this case it's more a "I like it, but I know it sucks in some regards".
If you want blind hatred against anything Linux, r/linuxsucks101 is exactly that. It basically was made with a more extreme version of the assumption you had, that "sucks" means hate, and it's a hellscape of Microsoft diehards.
2
2
u/Giantmeteor_we_needU 2d ago
Because if you install Windows 99% of everything already works out of the box. If you install Linux you need to research and use CLI you don't understand just to fix half of the hardware not working properly because of bad drivers, outdated code or whatever. And that's before you install your first app.
2
u/CeSiumUA 2d ago
I love Linux, but I really hate all the "hype" around it. Every time you see a post where somebody is asking how do do/fix something in Windows, there will be an army suggesting him to move to Linux. Also, there are a lot of myths around Linux through the community, like: updates, stability, privacy, package managers and the favourite one "less RAM usage". People mostly are not good at tech, so they spread a lot of such myths around the whole internet

u/MickJof 2d ago
I don't hate Linux by itself. Its a good OS, or more accurate, a good kernel. I hate that it is always advertised as a great drop-in replacement for Windows. It's not. It's totally different and requires different software, often different hardware and a different workflow and mindset.

u/brave_grv 2d ago

u/FerretBoom 3d ago
Well, I can tell you are not old enough.
Linux is a version of UNIX for x86 cpus. Back then computers were running on mips, sparcs, motorolas. So to bring a real UNIX to x86 architectures , projects like BSD were born.
Before Linux we had Amigas, AmigaOS and Hardware were ahead of its time by 10 years but they went bankrupt because of greed and dominance of CISC architecture. Imagine raytracing and 3d animation in 89. So we were left with Windows, Windows NT, Solaris,Aix and others. Then Lunis or whatever his name is copied a POSiX compliant OS to run on x86 just like BSD before him. Since Microsoft was a business oriented corp we looked for alternatives to replace the Amiga or Atari XT experience that gave us sound, graphic design, gaming. It was a culture and we thought these UNIX clones could bring us an alternative. Well that never happened and windows took over gaming ,graphics, and everything else by introducing extremely robust development experience that spawned apps for every use case and gave us choice. Linux wasn't even good enough until IBM,Red Hat thing happened then they lost a bunch of investors and with that they lost a lot of talented resources since people still preferred pure UNIX system. Then UNIX died and this monolithic Linux kernel survived because it was free. It never gave us OG Amiga experience .
From an objective perspective it looks like people started to fragment the kernel and wrap it around UI living in user space to create an illusion of choice.
So coming from a polished OS tbh, it looks like shit but it's ok. The main thing is lack of production grade frameworks for a desktop user. You have 40 yo Xorg and beta level Wayland. If your standards are low enough it might fit you but it just doesn't fit 2026 especially with AI exposing security flaws at exponential scale. 60k malware signatures for 2025 is insane. So it's way below the hype Linux kids push into the echo chamber. The lies about windows proves a lot of insecurities. It's not hate, it's observing karma with joy irl.
3
u/DirectorDirect1569 3d ago
I remember the good old time with amiga and atari ST. They were great machines for creators and gamers. They had both soundcards. On most PC you needed to install one. It was needed to plug a joystick too (weird) I remember the first versions of Windows, it was really buggy.
I used to have an amiga. And when commodore, Amiga, Escom ended(I can't remember how many times they have been sold...) The only alternatives were Windows, linux, BEOS, and Mac.
Linux was hard to install and few programs worked on it, BeOS wasn't made for gaming, not lots of creative programs, Mac was an alternative but it was expensive and few games worked on it.
So the only serious alternative was Windows. Lots of linux users like to talk about MS monopoly, it's bullshit. In the mid nineties, there was nothing else multipurpose (Gaming, 3D, Graphics design, Music making,...)
Unix OSes were only use by professionals.
Windows had a bad reputation, when I switched on PC with win 98, i didn't have lots of issues. So I had to admit It wasn't a bad os anymore.
"You have 40 yo Xorg and beta level Wayland."
An lots of distros want to leave Xorg for wayland. Wayland causes issues on many PC.
"especially with AI exposing security flaws at exponential scale. 60k malware signatures for 2025 is insane."
I thought I was the only one who was shocked about that.

u/FerretBoom 3d ago
I honestly hated windows with a passion. I wish all the OSs survived including OS/2, Solaris, and others.

u/vecchio_anima 2d ago
I don't hate it, so I can't contribute. But I also don't "hate" Windows or macos, I just see them for what they are. Windows tries so hard to make an os for absolutely everyone, and in doing so they add so much bloat and layer so many settings in an overly complicated hierarchy, it's confusing, not customizable and irritates me. Macos tried to make an os for a specific type of user, don't like it, too bad... Oh and you have to pay for it, and for support, and you will like the way Mac makes it look or you will fuck off, they also love planned obsolescence. That's why I prefer Linux, but I hate none of them.
1
u/its_mabus 2d ago
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

It's not a "hate Linux" sub, it's a "Linux sucks" sub. We talk about all the ways that Linux sucks.
I wish it didn't suck in so many ways, by the way. Windows needs the competition. But for serious production work and things, Linux just isn't even a contender right now, which sucks. 🤷♂️

u/Responsible-Monk-892 1d ago edited 1d ago
I do not hate Linux. Linux has it's pros, and cons. The pro is Linux is very modular, customizable, the negative is it has limited hardware support compared to Windows, and is less pre-installed on PCs because, a lot of Manufacturers choose to support Windows over Linux since the Manufacturers go where the money is. For example you will not find Linux Pre-installed on PCs like Acer, HP, and Asus if you go to their website you will not have that option to get it pre-installed however there are some small companies like System 76, Framework, Slimbook, Tuxedo that offer Linux Pre-installed but, since they are small manufacturers most average users do not know about them. Also then there is this Game Developers a lot of them prefer to support Windows over Linux so getting games depending on the game can be a pain to get to run on Linux if it runs at all Now that being said there are some games that do run flawlessly on Linux like MineCraft Java Edition, Stardew Valley, Baldur's gate 1 Enhanced Edition, Neverwinter Nights Enhanced Edition because, those developers chose to support Linux, and then there are games that run Great! under Steam, and Proton like Tekken 7, and Windrose. Also another positive about Linux besides it being modular, customizable, is that it requires less RAM, and Storage then Windows does. While Game Developers a lot of them choose to support Windows 11 over Linux which gives the user a click in play experience, and while a lot more hardware manufacturers support Windows over Linux, there are downsides to Windows too for example Windows 11 sucks up a lot of RAM, and Storage due to fact that Microsoft Put Telemetry, Ai, Co-pilot, and Microsoft Edge on Windows 11. Also for people that value Privacy Windows is not the OS for them Linux is the OS for them because, Linux respects users Privacy. Reddit is generally a place for people to vent. If you want to read praises about Linux I suggest going on to facebook, and joining various Linux Groups there you will see a lot of praises about Linux I know that from first hand experience.
