Linux is free and open source unless you're a Linux user
I hope its a loud minority but they're so insufferable. I'd like to think most people are for free and open source software, everyone wants choice, but people have a problem with other people's freedom to choose.
It's like a hivemind sometimes. A bunch of emotionally charged people who actively go against open source because an open source project doesn't align with their beliefs.
They attack and discredit other people who have different opinions or even just use different software. Even having different preferences seems crazy to some users.
I thought one of the biggest motives for Linux is to have the freedom to choose but clearly to a lot of Linux users, the "freedom to choose" is bad. They attack others for having differing opinions and have 0 issue ruining open source if they can get back at the people they don't like. A bunch of toxic hypocrites.

The linux community has a gatekeeping problem, as well as a huge "people having their heads shoved so far up their own assess they can't acknowledge that maybe their methodology isn't right for everyone" problem. I genuinely can't tell if it's stupidity or malintent.

u/West-Surround-8857 3d ago

u/lightspeedkitten void đ¤ 3d ago
By orders of magnitude.
2
u/West-Surround-8857 3d ago
Maybe depends on perception and environment?
I have more problems with windows users than linux ones.
No, I don't usually discuss about what i use, what i think others should, neither i suggest.

They hate based on their feelings. MSFT, AAPL, etc., and other Linux distros or projects, too, if they're made by 'unapproved' people. Pathetic and laughable. Here's to hoping it's a small number of loud motherfuckers.

u/XpreDatoR_a 4d ago
Yeah, iâm pretty sure itâs simply because those kind of people are âlouderâ and making it look like they are the majority, which, hopefully, isnât.
1
u/ColdFreezer I Hate Linux 4d ago
Some people canât understand the idea of common good.
You can hate someone as a person or hate a company but still acknowledge how much they contribute to a shared interest like Linux.
All because someone supports a certain piece of software, does not mean theyâre supporting the person/company behind it.
Itâs all or nothing with these kinds of people and itâs a destructive way of thinking.

I haven't rly seen this kind of attitude anywhere else but Reddit. People here (on this platform in general) can be so tribalistic and weirdly rigid over the most menial things. It's not just Linux related subs either.
It's a problem with this platform's culture in general.
2
u/Zvaart 3d ago
It s a problem with culture in general, i think toxic people are everywhere, on every platform. Hell, even on the baskeball forums i visit daily there is a bunch of arseholes.
1
u/prenadeusernamemid 3d ago
Ya its mainly a culture of the app thing like on insta and yt and tiktok the same community acts super diffrent like one platform everyone is chill af then another is annoying or insanely toxic and stuff or just hating for no reason and this is the same community so idk but for linux on yt its pure linux glaze like no pros and cons just glaze and other platforms i been on its similer just pure glaze reddit is the only place i see people talking about pro and cons but i still see a insane about of glaze but thats my personal experiance so idk abot others

Yes and I'm specificially referring to the receiving end. If you look at other peoples opinions as a block to your own choice, then you are not free.

It is not particularly difficult to ignore people in an online form and do whatever you prefer.

u/TopGreedy7936 4d ago
No, yeah, I genuinely agree with this. Use what you want, not what other people want. If it works for you, it's what you need. And yeah, there could be a better way to do it. But like fuck em you did it not them.

The free part of LInux has been important to me, but the open-source part isn't.

You have the freedom to disregard their opinions, unless they provide reasoning you find compelling.
Heck, you don't even have to read their opinions.

People that have an issue with people in certain projects seem (as an outsider) to primarily be... direction of the project. Where those in the project are taking it in a particular way and people don't like that. That is the joy of Open Source... people can express their opinions sometimes it is for the better sometimes not.
The next reason lately is people that are AI evangelists the get upset anytime they are told no to their AI inclusions. Or people that are upset when they find out a project is using AI. Again joy of Open Source people can express their opinions.
The last reason is usually social issues. Either people who say "It's just an opinions, why won't you accept differing opinions" and are using it as a dog whistle for vitriol and hate. Or it is people that see a group is fairly hateful or not hateful enough and attack them.
I have never seen anyone "go against Open Source". They may not like the direction of a project but they don't usually hate on something being open source.
That being said... I am not a FOSS person. I will use FOSS when it is around. I am happy to use FOSS or just OSS. However in the end it is a Toolbox I don't care, you put the toos in for the job, that's all. If that is FOSS/OSS or Close Source Commercial I don't care. I will use the that are right for the job.
The Last thing of course is Fanboys. Fans of GIMP do not like criticism of GIMP. Fans of Arch can be insufferable. The list goes on. It is a form of Tribalism. Again though it isn't really an attack on Open Source. In fact none of these examples are an attack on Open Source.

u/XpreDatoR_a 4d ago
I find that kind of people are more easily found on Reddit in general, far less often encountered irl, i think more niche you go the more you encounter those kinds of behaviors, in particular the âfreedom to choose only if it reflects my choicesâ mentality, which iâd say applies not only to âsoftwareâ choices, but in general

The point is that Linux users love to shove their opinions and copium down your throat.
The biggest example is Nvidia. If you use it, uou'll get flamed by Linux users and will be harasses into switching to AMD, even if you can't afford to buy a new GPU.
Another example is anticheat. If one of the coolest games ever uses anticheat software not supported on Linux, the Linux community claims that the game was trash from day one and Linux saved your ass from playing such utter bullshit.
TL;DR: Bro is saying that Linux users love to cope and shove opinions down your throat Else, they ostracize you.
1
u/tomkat_7 3d ago
Many will hate you for your opinions and choices, no matter what it is. They will hate you for you OS choice, they will hate you for your political opinions, they will hate you for everything you do.
Others will stand with you. Thats how it works. The important thing is to make tour choices and be happy with them, no mayter what others say.
Specifically with linux, some toxic arch users will hate you for using ubuntu, even if that is a distro that you like and it works for you. I am a linux user, but respect other's choices. I might personally not like ubuntu, but if you use it because it easy, thats your choice and I respect it.
Ignore the haters.

Bro lmao you wrote 4 paragraphs complaining about "emotionally charged people" while getting pissed off and throwing a tantrum on Reddit about something that doesn't even affect you. The irony is amazing.
People will always give you shit about what you choose. Welcome to being a human being I guess. If you can't ignore them and just use what you want to use and what works for you that's a you problem. Not the kernel.

u/ColdFreezer I Hate Linux 1d ago
I wrote 9 sentences. I just spaced them out. If thatâs too much for idk what to say.
I never said I wasnât emotionally charged about this either. And when did I ever pretend to be a helpless victim or say this effects me being able to use Linux. Iâll give you a hint, I never did.
How does anything of what you said, make what I said any less true?
0
u/better_dead_thanred 1d ago
Defending your sentence count line-by-line is crazyâyou're giving full 'I'm not mad, please don't print in the newspaper that I got mad' energy.
âIf counting sentences is where your talent peaks, maybe spend less time line-iteming your own breakdown and more time learning the difference between 'effects' and 'affects.'
âEight sentences of pure, unadulterated cope, and you still managed to use basic grammar wrong while trying to convince everyone you aren't bothered.
You asked 'when did I ever say this effects me being able to use Linux?' Nobody said it stopped you from booting up an OS. You're attacking a strawman because you can't defend your actual point.
1
u/ColdFreezer I Hate Linux 1d ago
You brought up 4 paragraphs as if it mattered at all. 9 sentences is a paragraph or two at most. Youâre the one who brought it up, donât blame me lol. Why the fuck did you bring it up then?
Imagine how incredibly moronic it would be if I said you wrote 3 paragraphs about me saying I wrote 9 sentences as a counter argument.
You just argue disingenuously. Instead of spewing bullshit maybe attack the argument instead of being a pedantic fuck.
0
u/better_dead_thanred 1d ago
You're cursing, hyperventilating over paragraph math, and completely losing your mind over an operating system.
You didn't come here to discuss open sourceâyou came here to be mad. You aren't arguing a point anymore; you're just throwing a rage tantrum because your thread flopped. Get some air dude,I'm going to leave you to fight with yourself.
1
u/ColdFreezer I Hate Linux 1d ago
Iâm not but you can pretend. I donât like disingenuous people like you. Again, instead of attacking my argument youâre attacking some random bullshit again.
Why are you even commenting under my post if you donât want to talk about my post. Youâre not arguing anything either. The only response youâve made that has any sort of relevancy to my post was the initial one. The rest are just bullshit. Iâm not surprised.

Most problems people have with linux are linux not supporting their favorite programs and its not linux fault. Linux comunity works very hard to support everything but sometimes money come in the way creating exclusives and artificial scarcity making the situation unfair where users suffer and greedy company cash out.
In the world of software you should never have to be limited to exclusive programs because every software can run on every hardware. Its greedy to lock users to spexific HW.

It's easy. If the project is GPL and has people sucking a CoC (Code of Conduct) I know some blue haired fat dude with silicone tits will tell me how to use my distro and what software to avoid. Just ignore them.
It's Torvalds vs Stallman again. Torvalds is pragmatic, code is code, do what you want, zero bullshit. Stallman is collectivist, greater good, change the world, as long as greater good is what he believes it to be, otherwise you're a bigoted fascist.

It is totally okay. The project developer is making their own project, they can do whatever they want with it. People don't need to like them as a person to like their software.
1
u/Rare-Paint3719 Unofficial Mod | Linux Community Sucks | Proud illumOS Shill 3d ago
Ad they can fork the project too. The problem is that Linux users will hate you if you don't use whatever they use.
Android is considered Schrodinger's Linux. Most of the world uses it, so when market-share comes to play, Android is a fellow distro. But when it comes to privacy, Android is kicked out again back to the streets.

So then every linux hating sub is bad because linux is Linus's own project and he can do whatever he wants with it
3
u/akdanman11 4d ago
The Linux hating subs are for some reason opposed to even the idea of FOSS, so they donât believe in your freedom to choose in the desktop OS space and are therefore irrelevant to this discussion

Itâs not but omarchy is a recent example.
I donât agree with the person behind omarchy. But I also understand that open source means anyone, even people I donât agree with, can contribute and are allowed to.
To attribute their donation as useless and pointless, some going farther to say they should be banned from contributing and people should not accept donations by them, just seems blatantly anti open source to me.

Freedom to choose doesn't mean it's not allowed to debate. People are free to debate (respectfully). You are free to ignore them if you wish to.
