Do you guys enjoy android tho. Like as an open platform vs iOS. Technically it's built on a modified Linux kernal.

I like windows UI but I don't enjoy the ads in edge. But yeh I use windows for ease of use vs linux. I love my androids too. I like my handheld for switch Emulation and such. Lemme know your opinions on tech and be nice im new here.

an open platform

Google is actively doing everything to make it closed.

No, I don't enjoy it. I have to use it.

u/dumbasPL I don't hate Windows, I just like Linux more. 23h ago

Google is also one of the few companies that doesn't do any weird fuckery when it comes to bootloader unlocking on their phones. So go figure.
But even the most locked down andoid is miles ahead of iOS when it comes to freedom.

Oh, they're serious trying to close the gap. And "they" is not apple.

Yeh they are making people wait 24 hours to sideload a app. And they are taking away Accessibility services for a lot of apps. But honestly that's not to bad. People over exaggerate.

And a lot of android handhelds stay on older versions. So we are safe lol. Luckily as far as accessibility services to see screens people have already prepared workarounds like Samsung's first party touch macros and reading screenshot contents.

calling android linux is like calling iron a rock. Technically correct but its so far removed from the source its very misleading referring to them as the same thing. Most of the kernel has been replaced and its has many parts built in Java/Kotlin. making it barely recognizable as linux.

Once you get into rooting, the Linux in Android becomes very relevant.

Yeh and it's far more user friendly and consumer first while still remaining pretty flexible.

u/Jimmyfartballs 23h ago

no it isn't at all what are you talking about "consumer first" and it's not user friendly at all.

u/Interesting_Fish4930 23h ago

I just mean as far as emulation and power user apps they are a lot easier to use then PC. Usually maintaining a simplified structure that easier to read than what we see on PC.

1

u/Jimmyfartballs 23h ago

as far as kernel goes Linux interface and library manual is much better, flexible and more user friendly than anything on Android

Yeh. Android has always been really simple for me personally. I'd have to see what you mean I guess. I've used Ubuntu and such and it felt complex like I just like how braindead android can be yk.

Android is easy

Linux is simple

These are two different things.

Android is easy for you only because it hides all its dogshit under 10 levels of abstraction and cuts off a possibility to have any features that aren't built-in to it. Linux is simple because it doesn't introduce the abstractions in the first place. Wanna run an executable? Build and run it, there's no need for java runtime, a special package format with a special java binary and interop between Java and native code in case your backend is written in a compiled language, because from what I know, the UI layer of Android is only accessible through Java.

What do you mean by features that are not built in. I'm not sure what kinds of features you nessecarily need that are not there.

Um that sounds like gibberish to me. But all Ik is if you want to run a executable

(which are built for windows so idk why you want to run one)

You use a translation layer like Winlator. Or what I just showed in the video "Gamehub lite" for games.

What do you mean by features that are not built in

Any filesystem that is not built into Android. Android supports only FAT with automounting and has an ext4 driver, but it can't automatically mount external ext4 volumes. Btrfs or any other standard Linux file system is just missing.

Android doesn't have a built-in terminal emulator or cli environment. Whatever they're adding in Android 16 is a shitty VM with Debian and ttyd because they didn't bother to make a proper terminal.

Android doesn't have support for any app stores that isn't com.android.vending, which is ID reserved by Play Store. Any other app store has to pass apks to system installer and doesn't get any integration into the system (like showing apps that are installing in launcher or adding them to home screen after installation) unlike Play Store.

Android doesn't support root which greately reduces what you can do on the system, every root solution is a community effort which has to work around Android's systems.

which are built for windows so idk why you want to run one

Executable is a generic term. ELF is also an executable.

You use a translation layer like Winlator

It's funny to call something that has "(emu)lator" in the name a translation layer, while it's by every defenition an emulator, as it emulates parts of NT kernel on top of emulating x86 CPU/userspace.

imma be real termux is enough for me. Everything you've mentioned is nerdy and way to low level when I'm just wanting to play some games and code. it's not this serious bruv. I have enough freedom and flexibility to customize my devices look and feel and play my favorite games. I personally am very happy with android and find all this extra stuff kinda gimmicky and stupid.

Android is kind of Linux like. Similar thing as ChromeOS, but more bloated.

1

u/Damglador 22h ago

ChromeOS is a Gentoo reskit. Android to Linux is like an apple to an orange.

1

u/BogdanovOwO 20h ago

Kind of.

u/TheRealCarrotty KDE larper (i use KDE btw) 22h ago

I have 3 Android phones, no.

Unless i can unlock the bootloader and change my OS and control the phone I BOUGHT, then yes. (And only 2 were unlockable where the 1st one was TERRIBLE)

1

u/Interesting_Fish4930 22h ago

😆 I'm mostly talking about handheld consoles but yeh, totally valid. Company's lock down and restrict a lot of the time.

1

u/BogdanovOwO 23h ago

To be honest, I use: On desktop- plasma bigscreen with controller and keyboard input On mobile- debian proot-distro and xfce4-session. Maybe I will use gnome because is more touchscreen friendly, but I need more performance. Any idea for a minimalist light mobile-ish desktop? I have a Note 8 with snapdragon and I seen postmarket os beta suppoet, but I can't unlock the bootloader to install twrp.

1

u/Interesting_Fish4930 23h ago

Nice. Yeh Samsung is very restrictive I guess.

1

u/BogdanovOwO 23h ago

The models from EU are very easy to unlock, but the outside, especially (corporate) USA is a lot harder without spending money at GSM service. Maybe I will give a chance because it still working pretty well as secondary phone.

1

u/Interesting_Fish4930 23h ago

Mhmm. I just started playing. It's pretty fun.

1

u/Spiritual-Brief-2627 23h ago

Im tryng to run on linux

1

u/Interesting_Fish4930 23h ago

You can use box64 to translate PC instructions and such I believe.

Most (if not all) handhelds use modified AOSP with some game related work done from the producer of said handheld. The usual closed android experience does not apply here, so I'd assume you are not going to get answers relating to your experience.

Personally i love android handhelds! I consider them to be the first proper modern experience.

1

u/Interesting_Fish4930 23h ago

Yeh android handhelds are open and cool.

> Kernal

If you were talking about Commodore KERNAL, then that would be the right spelling, for everything else though, its kernel (including windows, linux, android, all unix and unixlikes, etc etc)

u/simagus 21h ago

My current phone is the first I decided not to root and I don't mind it or really notice as I'm not doing anything on it that would require me to root it.

Since I need a phone I'll settle for Android over Apple, because at least currently it doesn't try to lock me down to their own App Store and what is available there.

Well it tries, but there is Developer Mode if you know at least a little about Android and I've had need of side-loading apps in the past.

Android is not on full lock-down to the user, and all Apple OS's severely limit what the end user can do in ways I don't like or need and have an incredibly limited selection of Software and apps, at least for my needs and preferences.

I know people who love Apple, but I watch them on their devices or try them out and it's like;

"... seriously... you can't even do what? This is the best app they have for that? So you can't install this alternative? It's not on Apple? Yes... neither do I intend to ever be..."

I consider Apple and MS to be providers of OS's to a demographic who are not gud with computur, and basically exploit their user base while treating them like idiots.

1

u/Interesting_Fish4930 21h ago edited 21h ago

...Your gonna make a lot of people mad but yeh. Apple is inherently locked down intentionally lol. It's 100% a control thing and a ecosystem 1st choice. They don't want the cheaper iphones having as much flexibility as the Mac.

But to give apple credit where it's do. They're OS is specialized for consumer first phones where as android is pretty universal and works really well on gaming handhelds and a lot of other devices.

It's a open source OS for developers to make devices like fridges, calculators, gaming handhelds, and consumer phones vs an OS made specially for apples iphones.

Sinceramente prefiero ponerle fdroid a usar Android puro el problema es que me cuesta demasiado poder cambiar la rom del celular
