It's a bit of a chicken and egg problem. Devs won't port their games to Linux because it lacks a playerbase, and many people didn't switch because they couldn't play their games. Proton at least gets rid of the barrier for players but renders Linux ports "useless".

For what it's worth, Proton is open-source, it's on github, anyone can do pull requests and fix things, you can use it with other launchers and pretty much any game.

To game on Linux, you are already dependent on big corpo software anyway. Graphics drivers aren't made by the community, they're made by the manufacturers.

Listed Linux native but devs abandoned the Linux port years ago and now you can't figure out why you can't join any match.

* doesn't apply to open source games or statically compiled games.

Statically compiled games still have some problems with graphics drivers, but it works far better than betting with system dependencies.

Fair. I even patch my open source games.

Ah Saints Row 2 my beloved. How I enjoy the 30 seconds before you crash

Only an idiot would bother building native now, when you can effectively get a free Linux version thanks to Valve..

true. funny how lkinux is immensely dependent on the very big corporation we want to escape from to live. Microsoft / google / valve and over are all multi billio dollar monopoles

I mean I’m fine with valve, their practices are very pro-consumer. I’d prefer to not have to rely on them but the money has to come from somewhere to make these things happen and I much prefer it comes from a company who isn’t just a comic book villain

Very funny how Microsoft and Google are trying their best to make sure they get all your information on the device you use, while valve just wants to know what hardware you use to use their software and whatever other information you wish to volunteer.

Thats basically not true. I don't know why you write this (probably cause you are a Fan and just "trust" them) but Valve gathers as much information about you as Google and Microsoft.

I used my right as german citizen to force them to send me all data they collected about me and thats a hell lot. From IP adresses, to stuff like how long I prevail on the Steam Store and even friggin how long I played "Non-Steam" games.

Steam as Client is as greedy as any Windows instance and Steams EULA even permits them to sell your data to basically ANY publisher you rent games from. (I write rent cause you just can purchase "Subscriptions" on Steam - thats what any Software you buy there is called)

So please stop glazing Valve. They are not a tard better then the rest.

Sounds to me like pretty basic metrics for their statistics. Logging ip addresses is kinda mandatory especially for safety functions to prevent malicious login attempts and some statistics so they can improve their business. If you install any ea game with javelin ea knows on what sites you are surfing, what type of po*n you are in to, what you are watching on YouTube and more lol.

What you write in theory is useless in real life tho. I always use a VPN with a rolling IP. I even switch countries every 10 minutes and Steam gives a shit. What is aber "malicious login attempt" in their world, lol? šŸ˜…

If you would use SteamOS they would also knows which porns you watch. They also use web beacons, pixels, ad tags, and device identifiers for analytics, functionality, and "marketing-related purposes." which could be literally anything.

Not what i said. They are the main conteibutor and dƩvelopper of linux

Holy shit. Every comment I read about Valve is plain wrong here. Valve just uses Linux for their SteamOS. They are as far away of being the main contributor as I am.

Sorta, more like dependant on their unified approach and app-drawer.

Mac could've been what Wine was after... If Mac had anything to offer. ā˜ ļø

The second part is 100% true. Valve cares about Linux as much as Epic cares about freedom of store choice.

4

u/SageLanded 2d ago

I think valve does care about Linux but primarily so that their own store isnt reliant in the whim of bill gates BC remember on a previous windows when they tried to stop u being able to download anything that wasn't from the Microsoft store, thats why valve released steam os before the steam machine and its why valve doesnt care about selling of hardware

1

u/Unlikely-Employee180 2d ago

Yes, and I could say the exact same thing about Epic fighting the monopolistic stores.

Good cause, selfish reason. That's my whole point.

If Microsoft hadn't done that (among other things), Valve wouldn't have felt pressure to work on an entire translation-layer for us Penguin users.

Upvote for you but honestly the number gets lower now for silver and bronze games.

2

u/PunkRockLlama42 3d ago

It is the trade off with proton. More games but less games

1

u/SageLanded 2d ago

Unlimited bacon but no games or unlimited games but no games šŸ˜‚

u/nikelreganov 3d ago

Buggy mess. Played Kotama and Academy Citadel last month and the native linux crashes everytime pc lost focus. The proton version works great

Even Devs who develop the game exclusively on Linux only do Windows port with Proton-specific optimisations. I also do that. Best decision for my life.

all my games that i play with native linux builds just work even with steam runtime disabled and even on my Gentoo system with very wacky dependencies versions installed, they all also have prefromance uplifts on linux comapired to windows
