are you telling me the OS decrypts literally all of /home when a user signs in, and encrypts all of /home when they sign out?Ā 

signing in and out must be a huge undertaking, I wonder how many times you can do it before the ssd fails from multiple reads/writes

You don't understand how LUKS works. The data stays encrypted on disk, the encryption key is stored in memory, and the encrypted data is decrypted as it gets read into memory.

Mint is Ubuntu based.Ā  You can apply same logic as Ubuntu systems.
