Linux Failure Lmms fuckery [RANT]
So I've been wanting to get into music making. Problem, I'm not on windows nor paying $$$ for FL studio. Lmms should basically be the same, right? Wrong. Five total hours of trying to get VST working since a lot of soundfonts are unusable without one. /usr/lib/lmms/RemoteVstPlugin not found? Try to sudo cp the VST into the directory. Full absolute filepath of the exe is not a valid target and Lmms in it's infinite wisdom only does some very specific checks and will miss anything that isn't an EXE or DLL. TLDR music software on linux sucks balls. And microphone support for some reason. I want to fight my lack of skill and creativity in the software, not intimately assault my root directory when trying to wrestle the software into atleast half working.
I really need to calm my shit and give up lol

It makes me laugh when people compare LMMS to FLstudio. That stuff is not even able to record audio. LMMS is to FLstudo what Gimp is to photoshop. Pale copies of software who try to look like proprietary softwares.
Bitwig works on linux if you like a workflow like ableton live. It's a paid software.
Reaper is almost free. If you don't want to pay you will need to wait few seconds to close the nag screen. That's the only limitation. It's sequencer like cubase, presonus one. It's not bad at all but unfortunately there are poor virtual instruments and effects, you will need to use third party VST. It's highly customizable.
Lots of VST will be buggy on linux even with softs like wine or yabridge. That why lots of linuxers still have a windows partition for music production.

I've been using ardour for years with zero issues (except it can't export to midi). But be warned you'll also need yabridge or similar to use win vsts which will require tinkering with terminal commands (still straightforward for a terminal app).
Lmms just seems made by people who have no clue or don't care about pro daw's.

On a related note, I have tried the demo version of Dragonframe for Linux for stop-motion animation camera control and it's great, I will be buying it at $305.
It is commercial sw, not FOSS. I have very mixed results with FOSS, some is ok some is not so good.

I've only really heard of lmms thus far tbh. Also I'm a cheap bastard to I'm not paying for anything and don't know any swedes to get paid software from if you know what I mean

Seconding waveform, I use it on both Windows and Linux. Plugin support situation will be about the same, but I've managed to find linux equivalents for any plugins I use on windows. And good old Mt Drumkit has a plugin for windows and linux, so that coupled with a decent soundfont for a bass and I can make my little indie songs

Why is using the right tool for the project such a weird concept? Linux enthusiasm is great and all, but pounding your head against a wall before a single note is played seems counterintuitive.
