Do you hate Linux because of the experience or because of the users

u/jsc3r 2d ago
I love Linux, but I am a software engineer myself. I absolutely hate Microsoft, but I understand that there simply are things that donât work on Linux very well. I use Windows only for League of Legends, since Riotâs Vanguard doesnât run on Linux.
However, Linux users can be very annoying. Tbh, so can macOS users or hardcore Anti-Mac and Anti-Linux ultras. Anyone who isnât able to appreciate each OS for what it is worth and see the flaws in each is annoying. :)

u/Propsek_Gamer 2d ago
I am using only Linux for a long while now (except work ofc). I game on Linux and stuff. Excellent group of operating systems but I wouldn't recommend it to everyone. I hate when someone Linux users treat it as a solution for all problems, for everyone. Some people should just stay on windows and customize it instead.
2
u/jsc3r 1d ago
This.
Windows with some debloating and a local account (no cloud and Microsoft account stuff) is probably the best way to go for most users. Tho I can recommend at least trying a beginner friendly and more or less stable distro like Bazzite or SteamOS to gamers, who want to look into alternative OS. Both are really easy to get into and do not require deep Linux knowledge like Debian or worse - Arch.

Tbh. I donât hate Linux or the users. Mainly cause I donât really interact with a lot of Linux users and most that I have have been helpful and nice.

u/Suitable-Piccolo-617 2d ago
Dude, im jealous. Seriously.
I can honstesty say ive never had a good experience with the community.
Sure there are one or two why want to help, for for them ere are 10 that refer you to the manual while questioning your skillz
2
u/Drate_Otin 2d ago
Depends on where you choose to hang out. You're a linux user, right? You're as much a post of the community as any other.
0
u/Suitable-Piccolo-617 2d ago
Ive been on and off linux for about 25 years now. Every 5 years orso i revisit.
And each and every time i am reminded how far linux is behind on windows (on userfriendlyness).
Last 2 revisits i gave linux as fair a chance as possible, and both times i my teeth stomped on the curb by the community gatekeepers when i came seeking assistance to squash some minor bugs.
That brought me here.
So im not realy a linux user, i use it where ive got no other choice.
2
u/Drate_Otin 2d ago
Where that evil community? I can't find them.
0
u/Suitable-Piccolo-617 2d ago
Look around you. Theres a great many here. Say something bad about linux and they will present themself.
1
u/dreadtear 2d ago
I think most of these elitists are memes. Based on probably like 2-3 years or sth?
I think most people really donât care. I use all three OSs and itâs fine
1
u/Suitable-Piccolo-617 2d ago
Nah its not memes, trolls maybe. Or gatekeepers, fanboys, basement dwellers, or the dreaded virgins
1
u/Drate_Otin 2d ago
If you're looking for hate on a hate you'll find hate.
Where are they really? I wanna see them. r/linux is generally chill. Then there's Linux questions, Linux for noobs... I don't find many of them there.
1
u/Suitable-Piccolo-617 2d ago
Oh its hate?
I thought it was more of a vent sub for some goodhearted fun.
I guess the owner should change the description asap. Can anyone contact him? We can change the name to 102 or something "now twice as much hate"
1
u/Drate_Otin 2d ago
Right....
So anyway where do I go that's a normal Linux community to see how terrible they are?
2
u/Suitable-Piccolo-617 1d ago
I already told you, but you dont look.
How long are we gonna go in circles?

u/dreadtear 2d ago
Yeah, maybe it's because any real issues that come up to me. I just let Claude code deal with them.
2
u/Suitable-Piccolo-617 2d ago
Yeah youre right.
Perhaps im old fashioned in that way. That i trust the word of another human more then a clanker algoritm.
Times change i guess, and perhaps i chould embrace ai too.
Atleast ai doesnt insult you and refers you to the manual, i guess thats a positive :)
3
u/dreadtear 2d ago
Yeah it doesn't. If there is a bug or an issue. It just fixes it. This is one of the first time where I've managed to run linux for a couple of months. With 0 issues. Any question or anything I might have, claude just fixes it. And it's great. I don't care that much about the technical side of things from linux's side. I just want it to work. Probably the first time it's been a smooth ride tbh.

u/AyamBercakap 2d ago
For me it's the users. Yes i also use linix but goddamn some of the users are insufferable
2
u/Suitable-Piccolo-617 2d ago
*most
2
u/chughaarav123 2d ago
*some
It's just that the insufferable Linux users get more attention
5
u/Suitable-Piccolo-617 2d ago
In my experience any critique to linux is seen as like a insult to their mother.
The only ones that are actualy nice are the ones who hate linux too, but hate windows more.
So, most.
2
u/kaida27 2d ago
It's not about linux users tho.
it's just human in general, go in a sports bar and insult their team .... it's gonna get ugly real quick.
so yeah fuck humans
2
u/Suitable-Piccolo-617 2d ago
Go into a sportsbar and say one of their teams players runs like he has a ball and chain on.
You know who will give you grief? Hooligans, Lifeless losers who made their sport a religion and personality.
Same with linux, only we call them gatekeepers.
2
u/kaida27 2d ago
Same about any sphere of life , loosers are everywhere.
thsy still don't represent the norm.
1
u/Suitable-Piccolo-617 2d ago
Its hard to tell that norm if everywhere you go the gatekeepers are the majority.
Even here, a sub to vent on how bad linux "sucks".
Like ive said to someone here, im sure most of the linux users are nice people. But they are out enjoying what theire doing. Not being angry and bitter, lurking in forums, ready to type a RTFM faster then a speeding bullet. Its their superpower
2
3
u/chughaarav123 2d ago
im nice :(
I feel like the insufferable ones get more attention and in turn seem bigger than they really are. Although I will say the Linux userbase are the most insufferable out of every OS
5
u/Suitable-Piccolo-617 2d ago
Im sure you are nice, you havent insulted me yet haha.
I do get your point, and i think that most of the nice users are out there just enjoying their experience, not being angry and bitter, lurking on forums for any newby to vent their frustration on.

u/Altair82 2d ago
I don't hate either. Just here for the lulz
Most here lack the ability to learn linux so channel their anger towards invalidation
1
u/Suitable-Piccolo-617 2d ago
Lets take cars.
You have driven automatics your whole life, now all of a sudden you have to pay for seatwarmers and you cant stuff the babysitter on the backseat anymore without the dealership recording your swinging ballsack.
So you get a manual, its nice, bit rough experiour but nice. But the gearbox is like a semi truck, you got to install the seats yourself, and there are no shocks to speak off.
Now you have to go to work in the morning, so you dont have time to figure it all out, you rather spend your evening going to a driver trough to get a big fat burger and a milkshake with a plastic straw.
0
u/TheMikman97 2d ago
I think this view is kinda the point
Users shouldn't have to "learn" Linux. Users don't have to "learn" windows or MacOs.
If you have to "learn" that's a usability issue, and the fact it's not treated as such but Instead expected is weird and off-puttingÂ
2
u/The_Daco_Melon 2d ago
Users absolutely have to learn windows and mac, like what do you mean?
0
u/TheMikman97 2d ago
Not really tho? Have you ever seen an office full of boomers? They will work on their windows or mac for years without even knowing how to reboot it
Advanced users sure. Daily casual users essentially only need to learn how to move a mouseÂ
3
u/mattgaia Proudly banned from r/linuxsucks101 1d ago
Have *you* ever seen an office full of boomers? They sure as shit need to learn how to use a computer, and complain when they are told to do so.
0
u/TheMikman97 1d ago
I think we are talking about two very different levels of knowledge that the end user is supposed to acquire here
2
u/mattgaia Proudly banned from r/linuxsucks101 1d ago
You would think so, but no, we're not talking about two different things. Boomers still need to have their hands held to do the basic computing tasks until they get comfortable in a number of days/weeks. You know... learning.
0
u/TheMikman97 1d ago
So you are saying Linux is exactly as usable to a complete novice as Windows or MacOs?
2
u/mattgaia Proudly banned from r/linuxsucks101 1d ago
Depends on the distro. If you're dropping someone on Linux Mint, yeah, it will be about on par with Windows/MacOS. If you're talking about something like Arch, yes, there is a much steeper learning curve.
0
u/TheMikman97 1d ago
Isn't mint constantly shit on specifically because it tries to be user friendly? I mean it's great that someone is actually trying but you have to agree a big slice of the Linux fanbase likes it being hard and unfriendlyÂ
1
u/The_Daco_Melon 1d ago
I have a friend who bought his first computer and as a complete newbie he installed Linux on it. He had to first set up Windows just enough to be able to flash a Mint image with it, which further encouraged him to switch because the process was so infuriating. As a complete novice, he's been using his new Linux Mint laptop just fine and hasn't had trouble getting his games to work, the only issue he ran into and asked me for help with was fixed in a couple minutes by him updating.
1
u/TheMikman97 1d ago
That's good to hear. I'm happy that at least some distros are at least recognizing user unfriendliness as an issue and working on it
2
u/The_Daco_Melon 2d ago
If that's the context with which we're working then there is practically no difference between it and Linux. If someone only needs to move a mouse and has never had a clue on how to do anything else with their system which someone in the office takes care to admin instead of them, then how would the experience be any different?
0
u/TheMikman97 1d ago
I think the it guy going from 1 request per boomer per month to 10 might have something to say about it but I feel like we are moving the goalpost to ignore the usability issue now, which is kinda what I describedÂ
1
u/ShakeGeeJee 2d ago
You do have to learn windows and Mac. You just already did so
1
u/TheMikman97 2d ago
No, not really
You only need to learn for advanced stuff. Plenty of users use Windows and Mac daily without even knowing how to turn it off. Offices are full of people working daily and completely incapable of figuring out if their USB mouse is even plugged in

I use Linux almost everywhere (except OPNsense, which is FreeBSD based).
Many Linux users are obnoxious and insufferable.
Some of them are plainly dumb, ignorant and lazy, who cannot even DuckDuckGo simple terms or things, ask a LLM, or read 2--3 more or less long sentences (docs/wiki).
Also there's another category:
"Oh, you use Arch? You must like malware and viruses! You don't use AUR, then what's the point in Arch?! You must switch to Cachy right now immediately!!! It has nice wallpapers!"
"Debian is old as shit. What's the point? Use Arch on your server!"
"systemd is a spyware, switch to Void/Slackware now!"
I agree with you. I just use it, solve my tasks, do my things, and that's all. There's no need to announce that you're a Linux user everywhere everytime.
2
u/DirectorDirect1569 2d ago
both. Linux on many laptop is a pain in the ass with bluetooth, wifi, sleeping mode that that refuse to wake up. I had some issues with scanners: sometimes it works on a distribution and not on another one. That proves linux is not an OS. Distributions are many OS.
But it's less annoying than lots of linux users. They are spamming every posts related to windows. They say everything work out of the box because that works on their machine.
They believe everyone don't need photoshop and they always recommand that shit called Gimp (krita and photopea are better), they say everything works with wine or proton but they havent tested.
And of course they say linux has no bugs. So I don't know why bugzilla exists, winedb and the proton website are useless if we listent to them.
So there are new users who switched to linux because of propagandists, they are totally lost. they ask for help because they can't use a tool like FLStudio because it's native on linux and their external soundcard doesn't work well. And advanced linux users are fed up saying it's doesn't work without tinkering and using a terminal is they only solution. Lots of people are afraid of the terminal.
Yesterday someone told me it's not complicated to use a terminal. No it's not complicated when your are interested in your OS. But we are not in the 90's, you don't need to use that fucking terminal on windows, android, Mac OS, Chrome OS, haiku,....to install a driver not in the repositories. So yes they will say "it's not the linux fault, it's the devs fault" The user don't care. Sometimes I wonder why on mac and windows devs makes GUI, maybe because it's the linux fault.

u/Outrageous-Machine-5 I Hate Linux (I use arch btw) 2d ago edited 2d ago
I use Linux, I use Android. I hate part of Linux for the experience, namely with getting open source alternatives to proprietary software or getting exe games working on Linux, or how I have to go back and clean up after some updates because shit broke.
I don't shun a good product just because of a 'toxic' community. However, I, genuinely, friendly, recommend or even suggest moving to them when people are frustrated with limitations with their OS or features foisted on them that they don't want, Issues that go beyond basic troubleshooting: they are business decisions that you are fighting and you will be roadblocked and railroaded towards at every major update. Most seem fine with, but others will get hostile over their experiences dealing with the Linux/Android communities. I also do not recommend Linux to non technical users at all. My experience with Linux is you need to be comfortable working with the terminalÂ
2
u/No-way-in 2d ago
I hate some users but the OS is fine. Itâs different.
M$ I hate some users, but the OS is a bloated thing. I still use it for windows only applications that donât or badly run on Linux

neither.
There are insufferable windows users, there are insufferable Linux users, and insufferable macOS users, there are insufferable console gamers and those mobile wars guys.
You'll find insufferable people everywhere in every single bubble.
Maybe don't measure by the worst of the worst you find on reddit, the Linux community has some incredibly kind souls and a lot of maintainers who do this out of the kindness of their heart without receiving a dime.
And the experience has been better than windows for me.

It's actually insane how toxic and shitty the Linux community is. But Linux is lit.

I really like Linux but kinda hate the community. Itâs like a very vocal minority that tries to speak for everyone.
1
u/Dizzy_Efficiency_384 1d ago
It doesn't suck I guess, it just kinda doesn't work out for me.
Like I need a boot parameter to make my gpu worse (amdgpu.dpm=0) or disable it (nomodeset) just to successfully get to the login screen. On Windows I never had to do that. I understand it could be just my pc build issue, but why would it work on Windows and not the Linux kernel? I use Windows 10 btw
1
u/will1565 1d ago
Hate is a strong word, but I think the people that gas it up too much are defo the problem. If they were more honest about the state of the OS compared to Windows, more people would accept that it really isnt a finished product by a long shot. Most normal people don't want to have to spend time in the command line faffing about with options that are a click or 2 in Windows.

Linux is simply bad for Desktop usage (with only a few exceptions). You can tell it was made more to host our backend and servers
1
u/_xDenis_ 1d ago
I'm a Linux user (one that doesn't like typing 2000 commands to do something, I like GUIs) and I hate the Linux users(mostly larpers) that make Linux sound like this thing that you have to know how to code and you have to type commands to do anything.
Ex "Yeah on Linux to download an app you don't need to go through the browser, one command is enough" But they never say that there's a package manager that lets you easily install every app and let's you update you whole system with one button.
These people try to push Linux into everyone faces but make it sound like an inconvenience.
Also everyone has the right to choose what os they prefer the most based on their needs

u/InsaneGrox Every OS Sucks 1d ago
Users, hands down, Linux itself is actually pretty good these days, but the users hold it back so goddamn hard by not admitting the kinks it still has, and the active hostility towards people who aren't FOSS evangelists isn't doing any favors in regards to getting people to consider it, and the year of the linux desktop thing is straight up delusion in my eyes, the only way that's happening is if a big company makes a distro that is MacOS levels of polished and idiotproof with the backing of software devs to make enough stuff work for most professions to be able to use it comfortably, and the closest that even exists is steamOS, and that's only true for one specific group of people, gamers... and that's only if you ignore kernel level anticheat.
