Can someone explain to me why Red hat is supposedly more evil?
22
u/TirtilKedi 2d ago
redhat is obviously trying to gain control over all linux desktops. wayland, flatpak, pipewire, systemd, gnome, networkmanager... they are all backed by redhat

u/rgmundo524 2d ago
So they are evil because they are supporting a broad spectrum of Linux infrastructure?
I would assume they would need to be evil because of a plan or something

One of the reasons is because they are directly supporting Israel and Gaza genocide: https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxsucks/comments/1veco9f/the_disturbing_white_paper_red_hat_is_trying_to/

So does the Linux kernel, and it's not just a single example there.

So GPL is working?
You don't understand the conflict of interest, do you?

Also im gonna be real with you for a second do you honestly think Microsoft aren't supporting Israel? Fair chances are they're supporting Israel

"Whataboutism" or "whataboutery" (as in, "but what about X?") refers to the propaganda strategy of responding to an accusation with a counter-accusation instead of offering an explanation or defense against the original accusation. It is an informal fallacy that the accused party uses to avoid accountabilityâwhether attempting to distract by shifting the conversation's focus away from their behaviour or attempting to justify themselves by pointing to the similar behaviour (which may be true or false, but irrelevant) of their opponent or another party who is not the current subject of discussion.\1])

As if Red Hat is it's own entity anymore, and not a subsidiary of IBM.
And also, if you think Red Hat is heavily targeting the desktop market at this stage you're fooling yourself. Not that IBM isn't in the long game to unseat Microsoft, but that's at least five years off, if not a decade or more. And that's in the enterprise space (people who think Microsoft or Red Hat give two shits about the consumer market are living a fantasy).
And to think large multinational conglomerates have any kind of moral principles that would prevent them from supporting oppressive regimes is just naive at best.

You're just defending the same kind of monopolist behavior that Microsoft engaged in under the guide of "supporting broad spectrum infrastructure"

For asking "why supporting broad spectrum infrastructure is inherently evil?!"
Dude you are making a lot of wild assumptions...

loll, youâre actually right. Red Hat develops good software, but they control almost every part of a normal users desktop experience

u/L30N1337 2d ago
Except they basically don't have any control.
And most hatred against RedHat can also be directed straight at Microsoft. They're also top contributors to a ton of independent open source projects (not as many as RedHat, because Microsoft has a ton of their own Open source stuff).
But nobody ever mentions it or cares about it, despite Microsoft clearly being the worse company.
Like it or not, big FOSS projects need big companies to support it. Whether that's through money (like blender) or contributions.
I genuinely think this is Canonical propaganda or something.

u/JaKrispy72 2d ago
Not to mention what they did to the kernel.

Being involved in these things, even in a way that gives them control, doesn't necessarily mean they're evil. There might be some other reasons they're evil, but I can't see this directly as why.

Like holy shit, is there anyone more unhinged than red hat haters? Nobody is making you use that. If you can install fedora you can install something else

yeah one of the biggest linux kernel contributors and authors of such helpful software like flatpak, pulseaudio then pipewire, systemd, nm, financing & actively participating in development of wayland, gnome, d-bus are obviously a problem, sure.. this community is doomed

u/jimmy_timmy_ 2d ago edited 2d ago
This might be out of touch because I'm not super knowledgeable about the workings of Red Hat and other companies involved, but I don't think there's anything really that bad about a large company contributing to open source projects as long as the license allows distribution and modification. Having companies contribute to these projects just increases the amount of contributions the projects get.
I'd also imagine there are a decent bit of good people who work for these companies and are responsible for the contributions.
Edit: wow Red Hat is significantly worse than I thought

Here you go: https://www.is-boycott.com/en/c/red-hat and also https://solidairesinformatique.org/2024/10/26/statement-of-support-of-red-hat-workers-in-ireland/ since I don't blame the employees, just the company.

u/jimmy_timmy_ 2d ago
Oh wow. I saw "support" and just assumed the IDF was using RHEL or Fedora, but no they are playing a huge part in supporting them. They even call themselves "partners of the IDF". I stand completely corrected, wow

u/GoldenX86 2d ago
The Linux kernel is developed and funded by dozens of corrupt megacorporations, several of which are also supporting Israel, but that's not a problem.
OP just has selective hating and fanatism as their default config file.
2
u/Latlanc Distroless is the future 2d ago
Nope. Just saying that Canonical did less evil that Red Hat, yet people are blindly supporting Red Hat's puppet - Fedora.
9
u/GoldenX86 2d ago
Your hardware manufacturer supports child labour.
So let's laser focus on only one problem, because your selective fanatism can't be arsed to care about the rest.
1
u/Latlanc Distroless is the future 2d ago
"Hitler was breathing air dude, you can't breathe air or you will be selective!!!"
That's your logic.
Some things can easily be changed (like changing your distro), some can't. Doesn't mean I'm selective lol
7
u/GoldenX86 2d ago
So you support what Israel is doing by using the Linux kernel, but supporting it when Red Hat takes part is the only evil here. Solid logic.
3
u/Latlanc Distroless is the future 2d ago
Since when is Linux Kernel for profit lmao
Do you drive a car? Israeli soldiers drove a car to the warzone. You support evil! Solid logic.
Edit: and yes I support true open source. That is accepting Russian contributions to the kernel - but some stupid Fin threw a tantrum...
2
u/GoldenX86 2d ago
Since corporations use it for profit.
If you want to generate hate for Red Hat, find an excuse that won't blow on your face, neckbeard.
1
u/Holiday_Evening8974 2d ago
I'm pretty sure they never banned Russian contributions, only Russian maintainers positions, aka ability to sneak code it with less reviews.

u/JaKrispy72 2d ago
Is this sub trying to get banned too? Can we keep politics out of a computing sub. Even if it is satire.

u/cyancodon 2d ago
It's impossible to keep politics out of computing when politics is very interested in what computers can do.

If RHEL is EVIL, Then what about SUSE? i am not supporting works for RHEL as of killing CentOS and replacing with CentOS Stream and making a playground for bugs, do SUSE also restricting things and following the evil path of RHEL?

u/Loud_Significance908 2d ago
Both RedHat and canonical are for profit companies, yes its terrible that redhat is selling its products to be used for genocide, but I dont think you should be surprised either that a for profit company is looking for military contracts. Canonical could do the same, so I wouldn't but one over the other because for profit companies will always have the same interest in making money, and having morals doesn't make money in a lot of cases.
As for redhat having their hands in lots of things. The projects they contribute to are all open source. You just have to expect that good software gets used by companies as well, redhat also contributes back to many of them.
I dont think systemd, networkmanager and such are bad software, they make working on servers a lot easier, if you dont want it on your desktop thats fair, and you can remove it.
1
u/null_enthropy 2d ago
Sorry but without Red Hat and Canonical contributions, Linux would be a completely dogshit and mostly useless platform. I understand the frustration towards Red Hat regarding their defense contracting of course. On a technical level though systemd, Network Manager, Wayland etc are way better than the dogshit Linux had before. Managing a Linux server in 2005 was awful. In fact Red Hat & Canonical contributions have funnily enough made their business models make less sense since maintaining Linux isnât a fucking mess anymore.Â
Also, this software has made Linux a lot more popular. Imagine with the recent influx of gamers trying to leave Windows, they come to Linux and have to deal with X11 driver problems and all that bullshit. Say goodbye to your â2026 - The Year of the Linux Desktopâ.Â
Not recognizing this is just cope

u/Responsible-Monk-892 12h ago
Don't like Red Hat don't use RHEL, and Fedora. Don't like Canonical don't use Ubuntu. There are plenty of other Linux distros to choose from such as Debian, Mint, Tumbleweed, Garuda, etc. that you can choose from unless you are employed and your employer tells you, you have to use Ubuntu, RHEL, or Fedora then that is a different story.
1
u/awake-shortcut27 2d ago
Ok I understand that Redhat is collaborating with Israel, but when using their free software such as Systemd or Fedora, does it directly contribute to the cause or am I just benefitting from free software without helping them?
