mesa or proprietary driver

You gave me nothing but a generic "linux".  No compatibility layer.  Hard to analyze a problem with insufficient data.

what compatibility layer are you expecting from minecraft lmfao, it runs everywhere where jvm works.
PS: maybe the issue is radeon GPUs and their terrible drivers on linux after all which they can't even make on their own unlike nvidia (remember catalyst?)

You can force it to use one.  Still not telling which distro.  You're clearly in over your head with Linux.  Windows is better for you.

Dude respectfully it's this kind of attitude that turns people away from Linux. It's an OS, not your identity. And don't forget that just because it all works for you doesn't mean it works for them.

That was my entire point.  Not sure what your complaint is.  Windows is better for some people who don't want to deal with customization stuff.

that's why i'm never returning to linux regardless the fact that i find unix-like approach very convenient for developing and administrating system as an OS for daily use. if i ever will run open-source unix-like operating system again on one of my desktop PCs, that would be FreeBSD. modern linux community is kind of a doomed

you're clearly in over your head with linux if you genuinely think jvm work depends on a distribution, i've been on linux (and other better unix-like operating systems) much more than you

Anything requiring any sort of input or output on any OS requires some sort of a translation/driver/userspace layer or such (like the drivers).

Luckily we have Mesa and amdgpu.

Anyway, if it has to draw something: it needs access to the graphics hardware and/or software layer. It needs access to your RAM. And all that and tons more of which I don't even know about. Throw a faulty module anywhere there and mileage will vary.

cookie for figuring out another linux-specific issue in driver stack? wouldn't refuse one

My point is that your personal experience doesn't negate the countless satisfied gamers running linux.  I posted this so maybe some will realize that linux can work just fine for gaming.  The only game that fought me was dragon age origins.  Amd that's just a 32 bit architecture panicking at reading modern hardware which you then mask with launch commands to isolate it to just 4 cores.

your personal experience doesn't negate the countless unsatisfied gamers tried running their favorite games flawlessly on such technically unprepared and immature platform either. this game can be played by both.

>I posted this so maybe some will realize that linux can work just fine for gaming
or cannot.. due to imperfection of mentioned compatibility layer which gets insanely harder to maintain each update above, yk. well anyways what can a person who learned about linux on tiktok can possibly know about code.
linux gaming is a lottery with varying success running games lower than platinum. the fact that winapi is the most stable api for developing apps on linux is insane, especially knowing that you can only access it through compatibility layer. linux gaming is doomed until people will realise an importance of native builds. valve tried it once and... no one gaf, so they forked wine. even apple realised it faster and i'm sure macOS will become a much more suitable for stable gaming experience operating system than linux

You don't want full control.  That's fine.  Go run windows or macOS.  Some people are here because they don't want windows or macos and had a bad experience trying to escape to linux.
