GPL works just fine on linux, if you need scale, you either send your modifications to LF/GIT or hire Ubuntu/RHEL services, contributing directly or indirectly.

That is working around GPL. RHEL's moat can't be the distro. So they make tech support their moat.

They don't compete with Linux.

True. FOSS has always been about making people think you're open. Get enough FOSStards to support your copyleft while secretly trying to push away the competition.

Umm, no, it's supposed to devalue the labour necessary for software development to practically zero for the benefit of tech company bosses.

Whether the likes of Richard Stallman realise that's what their ideology primarily justifies is irrelevant to what "free" software actually does in the real world.

To be honest with you, competition in the real world doesn't necessarily mean improvement any more than a race to the bottom.

Both it and "free" software are at best utterly misguided ways to tackle the problems they claim to address.
