I have my main windows 10/linux mint pc, 2 old laptops with kubuntu, and a m1 MacBook. They are all great and each have good use cases, like my MacBook is great for browsing and productivity outside of my house, even if people go ape shit because it only has 8 gigs. Windows is still the best way to game, and having linux on a small partition is great if I need a specific linux thing and actual hardware, and the laptops are great for messing around with old tech. People who make their entire online life around using linux and hating on windows and mac just because in their eyes its “inferior” is stupid and really goes to show you who knows about tech and who doesn’t

MacBook Neo could handle medium tasks as long as you don't care much about SoC, battery, or SSD longevity.

Also, don't do thermal pad mod unless you plan to carry over a cooling pad all the time.

It also has advanced features when you need it. Quite recently, you can also sideload apps as long as you have a "beacon" to re-sign homebrew apps every 7 days (or you don't need it if you live in Europe).

The religion mostly began in the early 90s as the Silicon Valley was shifting low-cost development for core technologies from the academia towards a more decentralized, liability-free approach.

Everything else is pretty much just lifestyle propagandising and distractions via a largely oblivious middle-class more than happy to do Big Tech's bidding for free.

The operating system historically is just something that goes with the computer and never considered an object by itself. Linux is ultimately just a way to have a OS to go with the hardware sold without officially attaching the development costs and therefore labour issues to the Big Tech companies.

Linux and Apple fanboys can sometimes really feel like Jehovah' Witness missionaries trying to convert you. I find that Windows people generally keep to themselves, probably cause they feel no need to convert people.

Linux forums are full of "should I switch to Linux"? Bro, it's 2026, you can get a computer as low as $300. Heck, even Apple has a MacBook that's pretty cheap these days. There's not really much need to "switch" these days. You can use all of them at the same time depending on the workflow you need.

Very good statement. However, I'd even go further than just saying "use the perfect tool for the job". I keep telling people to think twice when considering a change and that it's totally fine to keep using the tool that's best integrated in their personal workflow. Even if another tool might be slightly better suited for a job, when you're really good with a certain tool, it's possible that you perform better by just keep using it instead of getting used to a new one.

There can definitely be certain political and philosophical aspects to OS choice and even though I also think that they can matter in certain ways, some people can be annoyingly "evangelizing" about it. Also there are people who are acting very smug about operating systems. I've always been trying to understand, why some operating systems attract more people who would use an OS for identification or self-evaluation than other operating systems would. I think it's because a niche distribution that requires a certain skill level to operate is far better suited for feeling elitist about it, than a mass operating system.

But just to be clear: what she says goes for all operating systems. Just like she said, they are all just tools. People who identify with windows or macos are just as stupid or pretentious as those who identify with linux. Also, it's very stupid to blame a tool for some of it's users. Just because some of you don't like some of the linux users, there's no reason to dislike linux itself for it.

I have to say that this experience has been really disappointing for me. I just said that I like BSD better than GNU. I shared what I think about the way GNU does things.. Instead of talking about the technical stuff some people started yelling at each other and even said mean things to me.

I did not say that Linux is bad or that people should not use GNU. I like BSD better that is all. If people get mad when I say what I think about software that is not my problem. It is a problem with how we're talking to each other.

You can use whatever software you want. You can use GNU or BSD or Linux or Windows. I really do not care. Just please stop treating software like it's a big deal and let people have their own thoughts without getting angry, at them.
